Ellsworth and then Trixie just busted me up.

Ten years. Wow. I decided on a whim to watch the premiere when it came on, certain I wouldn't like it.

So glad I gave something that wouldn't ordinarily interest me a chance. Probably my absolute favourite program ever.

Ellsworth :(

Every time I start a rewatch I always think to myself how much I love his introduction scene. It's the introduction to the Gem itself iirc. "I stand before you today beholden to no human cocksucker"

Jim beaver was great

"Fuck us all anyway for the limp dick cocksuckers that we are"

Thanks for posting that Rockroi, good stuff.

I was a bit annoyed to see that HBO didn't pick up Milch's latest attempt (Money, starring Brendan Gleeson). Back to the drawing board for Milch I guess.

just watched that video...again, thanks Rockroi...

Finishing up my rewatch tonight while the wife has a girl's night. I'm surprised at how angry I became watching Ellsworth get shot again. And his last ride through the camp, which is happening as I speak. So angry, and sad.

yeah Ellsworth's killing was the hardest of the entire series, especially with him there feeding dog and waxing philosophic...fucking cocksuckers...

...also like some others have said why can i watch shit series on demand but no Deadwood... :smoking:

I watched this show, for the first time, over the past few months by getting the DVDs through Netflix. But now I'm outraged by the limp anti-climax. That was no way to end the series. It was no way to end the third season even if you expected to continue the series. All the building tension around the evil Hearst and the elections and imported private armies and people picking sides and Ellsworth's murder as the last straw and then nothing happened!

I really enjoyed the show, the characters, the dialogue, the wit, the shifting relationships. But I'll always resent the weak ending and I'll always wonder why Bullock was supposed to be a hero of the story, or perhaps they dispensed with that expectation after the first season. I think the richness and variety of the characters, especially the secondary characters, made it so compelling.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread before, but if you have HBOGo, all 3 seasons of Deadwood are available there. I recently finished watching them there myself. :)

I've just started re-watching it on amazon prime instant (or whatevs).

I can never seem to pick an absolute FAVORITE anything (TV series, movie, etc.), but this show is certainly right up there with any of the very best that television has to offer.

First of all, you have every right to your outrage over the anti-climactic climax.

Second, and however, the ending is true to the show; the show is about the survival of freedom, even in the throws of an overwhelming Leviathan. The show's theme is that these people, in this place, want to be forever free, and in doing so bind with each other into this dysfunctional family. And as of that last episode, the family survives. IT survived due to tenacity (Alma); it survived through self-control (Seth), it survived through sacrifice (Johnny) and it survived through being more horrible than anyone outside can fathom (Al Swearengen).

That ending is awful because it was a set up to a fourth season that will never happen- Wu's men coming into town, Hearst's army still present, Seth deposed, Al holding everything together. Everything is ripe for a battle that would surely consume the town (in fire).

But if the show HAD to end on a down note, they did the best they could because not every story ends the way you want, especially in real life. Its now always "something pretty." In that vein, the show stayed true to itself and in that light I can still appreciate it.

It's my fav drama show ever. GoT was close to that level in s1 but not really. No one tops Al.

and watching the show now it's just shocking to see how many pointless sex scenes GoT really has. Deadwood had brothels and yet the women were never this objectified. Trixie was the best.

And it's odd how Deadwood comes across as more gritty and realistic when it comes to sex. GoT ought to be more so, since, well, pre-industrial hygiene and more sex.

Instead, all the women fit 21st century standards of beauty (including shaving, trimming, tanning, teeth). A minor exception in the last season with Mole's Town, because it had the "bad" brothel worker and so it was okay that she also had bad teeth for that reason. I'm pretty sure most of the sex scenes is just because softcore porn increases viewer ratings.

Joannie Stubbs

ETA: when I first read these comments, I THOUGHT the argument was that Joannie Stubbs was "objectified." However, now looking at it it SEEMS like the argument was that Joannie was more attractive than Trixie. I'm not interested in whether or not Joannie was more attractive than Trixie. THe discussion BELOW is whether or not Joannie - as a character - was actually objectified.

Its hard to say; Joannie was very attractive by almost every standard and she was portrayed as very attractive. This is unlike Trixie or most of the other women who worked at the Gem and the Bella Union who were ... flawed. While the women were- to one degree or another- attractive, the audience was forced to say "Look, you may not think they are THAT attractive, but for 1881, these women are the Angelina Jolies of their day."

Joannie, agreed, was different. But....

Joannie was the exception that proved the rule; Joannie was an ultra-high priced working girl who the story identified as being unusual for that day and age. The show did a great job of laying (...phrasing...) her story and identifying her situation. The audience was supposed to look at Trixie (arguably the Gem's best girl) and Joannie (Bella Union's best) and be able to identify their differences. And then also their similarities. But not just in their physical beauty- both men were possessions of the men they served- with Joannie, it was literal: Cy purchased her from her father. Trixie was serving Al out of a perverted sense of loyalty. Both women were hard- Joannie had a scene where she goes off on the Bella Union women because they were not being hygienic. And both women eventually left their place- Trxie to be with Sol; Joannie to open her own joint.

With regards to whether or not they outright objectified Joannie, I will say that the story-line that sticks out on this is when she makes out with Jane in season 3, but IIRC this was right before the shit hits the fan with Hearst, and I felt that the show did a great job of portraying the isolation of Joannie and Jane and how they were both (justifiably) afraid of what was coming. Therefore, almost out of necessity , the two women fell in with each other. This is similar to the scene in ACoK where Dany is serviced by one of her hand maidens but feels its more out of duty than passion.

Frankly, I think that the women in the show were always well thought out and well executed- think about the wide variety of women there were - from Alma to the women in the Opera Troop to the call girls to Jane to Mrs. Bullock etc. The show did not just have women there to be sad, forced appendages of the male characters but were fully realized characters. Fuck, you could make the argument that Mrs. Ingrenhausen was the most sincerer and calculating character in the show not named Al Swearengen.

Miss Isringhausen is one of the most badass and underused characters in the show, in my opinion. The scene where Alma finally confronts her is probably one of my favorite scenes of the series.

I'm still pissed off that these cocksuckers never even made a movie to wrap everything up.

cocksuckers.

I'm on team Wu

Not as upset as Ian Mcshane. He was very upset from an interview I read a few years back.
