Moments of Foreshadowing 8 [TPatQ spoilers]

Lord Varys

Jon walking through the gate with Aemon post-attack in ASOS:

"The ice pressed close all around them, and he could feel the cold seeping into his bones, the weight of the Wall above his head. It felt like walking down the gullet of an ice dragon."

Jon will be stored in the ice cells or ice storage and will learn his parentage before awakening.

I love this. Also, do you think there's any possibility for a real ice dragon at the wall or winterfell? Or maybe he dreams of winterfell cripts again and sees «the ice dragon», as in a metaphor for ice (L) + dragon ®?

“The frightened child who sheltered in my manse died on the Dothraki sea, and was reborn in blood and fire. This dragon queen who wears her name is a true Targaryen. When I sent ships to bring her home, she turned toward Slaver’s Bay. In a short span of days she conquered Astapor, made Yunkai bend the knee, and sacked Meereen. Mantarys will be next, if she marches west along the old Valyrian roads. If she comes by sea, well … her fleet must take on food and water at Volantis.”

“By land or by sea, there are long leagues between Meereen and Volantis,” Tyrion observed.

“Five hundred fifty, as the dragon flies, through deserts, mountains, swamps, and demon-haunted ruins. Many and more will perish, but those who survive will be stronger by the time they reach Volantis … where they shall find you and Griff awaiting them, with fresh forces and sufficient ships to carry them all across the sea to Westeros.”

Illyrio assumed Dany’s khalassar will eventually come to Volantis and in the way, most of her army will perish. However, the remaining few will be stone hard soldiers .

It was a futile thought. He might as well wish for another thousand men, and maybe a dragon or three.

I think after Dany wins the second Dance of Dragons (or gets close to winning it), there will be a thousand veteran soldiers left in the GC. We know that Griff already hates Varys. I think Griff will learn that Aegon was false and all they did was a mummer’s farce. Griff will not want to return to Essos and will lead the men to the Wall since there will be nowhere else to go (just like Stannis did after the Blackwater). Besides, they might hear the word of Jon’s Targaryen claim by that time.

' "What's wrong?" Arya asked him when she saw the tears shining on his cheeks.

"My princess," He sobbed. "We've been dishonored, Aenys says. There was a bird from the Twins. My lord father says I'll need to marry someone else, or be a septon."

A stupid princess, she thought, that's nothing to cry over. "My brothers might be dead," She confided.

Elmar gave her a scornful look. "No one cares about a serving girl's brothers."

It was hard not to hit him when he said that. "I hope your princess dies," she said, and ran off before he could grab her. '

I rather hope this is not foreshadowing... but this is Arya talking to Elmar Frey, who she doesn't know she's been betrothed to, when he finds out that his family has broken ties with the Starks in the aftermath of Robb's wedding Jeyne Westerling. Little does Arya know that she just wished herself dead.

Eerily reminiscent of her "naming" Jaqen to Jaqen.

Is this passage (just before Arya overheard Varys & Illyrio) a foreshadowing or is The George just describing Arya's fear?

When they had first come to King's Landing, she used to have bad dreams about getting lost in the castle. Father said the Red Keep was smaller than Winterfell, but in her dreams it had been immense, an endless stone maze with walls that seemed to shift and change behind her. She would find herself wandering down gloomy halls past faded tapestries, descending endless circular stairs, darting through courtyards or over bridges, her shouts echoing unanswered. In some of the rooms the red stone walls would seem to drip blood, and nowhere could she find a window. Sometimes she would hear her father's voice, but always from a long way off, and no matter how hard she ran after it, it would grow fainter and fainter, until it faded to nothing and Arya was alone in the dark.

Somebody must have mentioned this before but I haven't seen it...

"Well, as to that," Desmond replied, drawing his longsword, "wizards die the same as other men, once you cut their heads off."

--Foreshadowing Varys gettin the Janos treatment...

I think I did post something about that... most likely I'm not the only one.

Also, Varys joking with LF in ACoK about becoming "brothers on the Wall" and Tywin/Tyrion keep stating about "heads on a wall" regarding Varys/LF's deeds.

Sansa not only does slay Sweetrobin's doll, but she also tears its head of and... stick it to "Winterfell's" walls.

Varys is described as wizard by Illyrio, plus Desmond's line like you point out.

Some user iirc also posted about the dynamics cat/mouse that keep repeating between Arya and Varys, and given the Sansa/Littlefinger dynamic I'm 99,9% sure the Stark sisters will take care of the best two players.

Personally I find the line about Varys and LF becoming brothers to be one of my favourite ironic moments in the series.

In Jaime's ASOS chapter with the White Book, he mentions that the KG was divided during the first DoD. Could they become split again? What would the significance be? Or is this foreshadowing the KG being split when they hear of Rhaegar's heir, Jon, being alive?

Dany entering Vaes Dothrak: "Monsters stood in the grass beside the road: black iron dragons with jewels for eyes, roaring griffins, manticores with their barbed tails poised to strike, and other beasts she could not name."

Dany entering Qarth: "Slim towers stood taller than any Dany had ever seen, and elaborate fountains filled every square, wrought in the shapes of griffins and dragons and manticores."

I know the first one has been brought up here, but I don't recall the second ever. I am curious about this manticore being grouped with the other two both times.

Hmm, the only example of a manticore we have is the venom I believe. Qyburn thinks Oberyn has magically thickened manticore venom on his spear that killed the Mountain so painfully. Griffin Dragon seems pretty clear to indicate Jon Con and Aegon, I however do not remember if a westerosi character has a manticore for a sigil, I'm gonna go look it up.

Edit: I thought I remembered that the sorrowful men tried to kill Dany with a manticore, but since I think of a manticore in the greek version that didn't make sense to me. Also, house Lorch, the man who killed Dany's niece, and a Lannister bannerman. Hard to see why house Lorch would be grouped with Aegon and Jon Con tho.

Black iron dragons are Blackfyres and fAegon. Griffin is JonCon. House Lorch has manticore in their coat of arms. Wiki says that a knight of the Lorchs took part in the Faith Militant uprising against Maegor the Cruel.

You are right, the Sorrowful Man does use a manticore to try and kill Dany. It obviously must be different to what we think of as a manticore though, as it fits inside a box.

Obara’s face was flushed. “Give me back my spear, Uncle. Cersei sent us a head. We should send her back a bag of them.”

Prince Doran raised a hand. His knuckles were as dark as cherries and near as big. “Ser Balon is a guest beneath my roof. He has eaten of my bread and salt. I will not do him harm. No. We will travel to the Water Gardens, where he will hear Myrcella’s story and send a raven to his queen. The girl will ask him to hunt down the man who hurt her. If he is the man I judge, Swann will not be able to refuse. Obara, you will lead him to High Hermitage to beard Darkstar in his den. The time is not yet come for Dorne to openly defy the Iron Throne.”

At that Lord Borros grew uneasy. “Not here,” he grumbled. “He came an envoy. I want no blood shed beneath my roof.” So his guards put themselves between the princelings and escorted Lucerys Velaryon from the Round Hall, back to the castle yard where his dragon Arrax was hunched down in the rain, awaiting his return.

Aemond Targaryen’s mouth twisted in rage, and he turned once more to Lord Borros, asking for his leave. The Lord of Storm’s End shrugged and answered, “It is not for me to tell you what to do when you are not beneath my roof.” And his knights moved aside as Prince Aemond rushed to the doors.

I think Doran wants Obara to stall Balon and finally get him killed. The attitude of Doran and Borros looks similar to me.

snip

I don't think Balon will be murdered as Doran still has doubts about Aegon.

When Rhaenyra's envoy comes to win SE, Lord Baratheon tells him that one of his daughters is going to be married to one side while Luke refuses the marriage offer to one of his daughters. I think the parallel fits with the Martells. Doran Martell was a staunch supporter of House Targaryen and Dany's family, but Aegon marries his daughter Arianne, securing Dorne for his side while Dany refused the marriage offer to Doran's son, Quentyn.

If we go further with this parallel, Aemond kills Rhaenyra's envoy, Luke, when he leaves to go back to his mother. I think when Dany sends an envoy to Dorne, Arianne, thinking that Dany gave the Martells' envoy, Quentyn, to her dragons, will kill Dany's envoy and possibly his party as retribution, likely done by Obara. Aemond killed an envoy with his house's sigil, a dragon and I think Obara may kill the envoy with her house's sigil, a spear, when they are outside Sunspear; possibly a hunting accident.

"The Black Pearl," she told them. Merry claimed the Black Pearl was the most famous courtesan of all. "She's descended from the dragons, that one." the woman told Cat. "The first Black Pearl was a pirate queen. A Westerosi prince took her for a lover and got a daughter on her, who grew up to be a courtesan. Her own daughter followed her, and her daughter after her until you get to this one

I think Bellegere Otherys's story is to bring us to mind a Targaryen bastard by Aegon the Unworthy whose mother was a queen (Bellegere was a pirate queen) whose descendant became a prostitute. Daena, Dameon's mother, was Baelor's queen, and Serra, a sex worker, is descended from Daemon. The descendents of Bellegere Otherys have used the title of "Black Pearl" like their forebear for generations just like the descendents of Daemon have continued to use the black dragon of their forebear. They continued to follow Daemon to raise rebellions, and try to take the IT. J. Stargaryen adds

These are both good points, to which I'll add that "Black Pearl" could be a hint of the Blackfyres surviving through the female line,
