The Kindly Man

Recommended Posts

A true servant of the Many-Faced God really is "no one"; they dedicate their present and future to Him, and they completely throw away their past selves. The kindly man senses that Arya is lying when she tells him that she is no one, when really she still cannot shake her true self, Arya of House Stark. She keeps Needle, she remembers Jon, and the wolf child in her lives on.

The kindly man has given her the choice to turn around and leave the temple many times, but she's refused all of his offers. Arya wants to become a Faceless Man to wreak vengeance on those who've done her wrong, but she cannot simply be a shell, forever serving the Many-Faced God, nor will she ever be.

The thing is, I think the Kindly Man knows this and had grown to respect her, and is subconsciously bending the rules for her, overlooking some things she's never going to truly let go of. Probably because while she's lagging in shedding her identity, her marks on death worship are through the roof.

Arya will never be no one, although she may say it and may even think it but she can never be no one. She is Arya of House Stark, wolf child, blood child and if she does not realize this as yet I think the Kindly Man does.

There is also the fact that the FM are all lying and lying is part of their art. They are good liars and good a finding a lie in others, so this too is part of her training...to become a better liar.
