ADB
So, using the Corn Code, so far as I understand it, with respect to this paragraph, we've got a clear major event code, likely involving the death of a major character. Possible clues in the surrounding text: "somewhere off in the far distance." (we've also got "a long way" and "far beyond his own encampment") In Westeros? "to the north" with Stannis? at Winterfell? at the Wall? What about the "horse"? Or "the dying man...screaming for his mother"? Anyone see clues there? I don't mean to turn this into a big discussion of the Corn Code or whether it exists. Just thinking of ways to try to read this for clues. I mean, why on earth would GRRM release just one skimpy little paragraph, and one without too much to recommend it? Martin has expressly said the "corn code" does not exist. Period. As for why this paragraph, presumably because it's the first paragraph in the chapter that he's releasing, and this is a promotional tease. With these words, GRRM sets the fear and panick of battle for the readers, which makes it excellent for promotion as it gives the mood of the scene without actually spoiling it. The Human Abstract
Martin has expressly said the "corn code" does not exist. Period. Yeah, bro. But did he say it 3 times?
Crimson King
Yeah, bro. But did he say it 3 times? From what I understand of the code, saying three times would be an actual confirmation.
Matthew Marzolf
I don't even consider this a tease. In fact I laugh at the implication...Hah!! I started AGoT in June 2008, read through the first 4 books in 2 months. ADWD took me 4 days. So I've been a fan of this series for approximately 2,065 days, approx 2,000 of those days have been spent waiting for new material. (I can't imagine how the poor sons of bitches who started in 97 feel...) Seriously, although there were similar gaps in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. The last three in that series came out pretty well on each other's heels though.

too fat to sit a horse
King only wrote those last three so quickly because he was spooked after he got hit by a car that he wouldn't live to complete the series. The series suffered as a result. That experience is the only thing that makes me ok with Martin taking his time. However, I can't help but think if he didn't repeat himself so much, these books would be done much sooner. It's infuriating to me when i read almost hte exact same paragraph in a later chapter that was in an earlier chapter. I also wish he would have more faith in his readers that he didn't need to repeat every bit of information a hundred times. Like in the last book with Tyrion's chapters, just as one example of many, the where do whores go and crossbow thrumming, I didn't need to go over that ten times in each chapter. Are you talking about GRRM or Robert Jordan? :-P I'm just joking. For the most part, I don't mind a little redundancy and excess, because that comes with the territory in a world as immersive as WoT or ASoIaF. KingDaddytheGood
At least I only started reading the series a couple of years ago, so my wait hasn't been too long, but some have been reading (well, reading occasionally but mostly waiting) for more than ten years.......... oprahnoodlemantra
Are you being ironic? GRRM is on fire at his blog with all the events at the JC cinema. The last post was a week ago and the one before that was the first one in a week. He usually posts like every other day. Technically that's quieter than usual. TheHouseHB
Any truth to a rumor that George will release a release date this month?
WalkerDragon
I'm still holding out for a 2104 release date. I just can't see the show overtaking the books. George would never let something like that happen. I think summer of 2015 is the latest.

Lissa Nymeros Martell
I just hope this isn't all he's written since then (joke) I actually think it's more likely that both books are essentially done and the publishers and GRRM are just sitting on them to drum up more buzz and working out plotline sequencing so big reveals aren't spoiled early. Damn you, GRRM. i love you. :crying:
Ser Creighton
Martin has expressly said the "corn code" does not exist. Period. As for why this paragraph, presumably because it's the first paragraph in the chapter that he's releasing, and this is a promotional tease. No he didn't, he said their were no codes in the books, and the corn code is not a code it's a title. Even says so in the OP. Outside of that, I don't do it anymore, but if you just follow the basic aspect of the rule of 3 which as a literary device it is, it's basically used for people to take notice, pay attention, remember this. Do yourself a favor pay attention to three, it is not an accident that he uses it all over the books, it's thematic based writing. All 3's not just repeated words, you will see where he wants you to pay attention. It can be the red wedding or it can be Jaime and Brie taking a bath and some times yeah it's just dialogue.I don't do it anymore because I got sick of doing it, if people can't get their heads around the 100 or so pieces of text support literally sitting on blatant foreshadowing I can't do much about that. Ignore the corn code for all I care, ignore 3, ignore all the thematic based writing, read the books how you want. But at least get the facts right. Martin does not even know what the Corn Code is. He has never read it, a fan asked him about corn and codes. Their was no discussion, it was a question and not a well asked one either. You find death in a lot of the foreshadowing because the dude kills a lot. I made my mistakes with the thread, but the rule of three is still the rule f three, even Ran pointed that out, it's my fault for not listening to him. That's why the text support is so over whelming. If people want to follow it that's their business, or pay attention to three that is also their business. Personally I am done with the thread, but I still pay attention to when three is used, with good reason. Take a look at some of the prophecies, you think they are loaded with three for no reason? It's a theme in the book, a rather large one.
