The studio announced today they've sealed a deal to distribute the feature film version of Naughty Dog's PS3 title The Last of Us, a screen adaptation which will count Spider-Man and Evil Dead veteran Sam Raimi amongst its producers.

The movie's screenplay will be penned by Neil Druckmann, the Creative Director for the game, who will also produce the film along with Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures company, Naughty Dog Co-Presidents' Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, and Game Director Bruce Straley.

Not much here to indicate what the film will cover. If it's the stuff from the expansion pack I'll probably be uninterested. Something along the lines of Joel, Tess and Bill on a smuggling run would be cool.

Also, I've seen Gerard Butler's name knocked around for Joel. I'd endorse that. And if Bill is going to be in it, they should simply cast the actor that voiced him (he played Dan Dority in Deadwood).

Just adapt the story of the game. If they do it well then fans of the game will like it, and there are millions of people who have very little knowledge of the story so it's new to them.

Save original storylines for game sequels.

Could this finally be a good video game adaptation? I doubt it, but I hope it is. Prince of Persia should have been but it was not all it could be. I'd probably have to say it's my favourite VG adaptation so far, and Final fantasy Spirits within. I did like the animated Resident Evils, and I liked Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker too but they don't count because they never made it to the cinema.

Josh Brolin for Joel, without a doubt. I get the feeling they'll go with an unknown actress (or relatively unknown, anyway) for Ellie. They also better tap Gustavo Santaolalla to do the score (he composed the music for the game, as well), because the soundtrack for the game was perfect, and was a large part of the experience.

I also think it'd be best to stick with the story as it was presented in the game. For those of us who have played it, it could be a bit redundant (to an extent), but I don't see much of an issue with that, personally. The vast majority of the people who see it wouldn't have played the game, anyway.

I'm more interested in who they'll get to direct. John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tu Mamá También), or Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) would be my choice/s.

Sam Raimi and Lucy Lawless are good friends. So Lucy for Tess maybe?

I like Hugh Jackman as Joel. When you look at Hugh with a beard (and without the Wolverine hairdo) he comes pretty close to Joel. And you know he can do action as well as being a top actor.

A pity Troy Baker just doesn't have the right look. His VA work as Joel in the game was superb.

I agree. Fundamentally it is a very good, cinematic, intimate and emotional "zombie story". And I would like a wider audience to enjoy that story. The only thing they need to remove (or rather reduce) is Joel's non-infected kill count. I wonder if they'll cut the David storyline, it was good, but really just served to give the player a go at playing as Ellie and pad out the game a bit. Not really central to the story.

The off-campus-college-neighborhood area (where you encounter the sniper) was my favorite in the game. That's how I perceived it at least. A lot of those houses reminded me of frat houses at State College, PA. That should make for a nice transition on screen if they go that route.

wonder if they'll include the cannibals. Another insanely creepy and uncomfortable part of the game

Yeah David had a short time in the game but he was terrifying. If done right he would probably be the best part of the movie. By the way that cutscene if David catches Eliie in the boss fight is gruesome. I can't remember a boss fight that had me on edge like that (other than the 2nd Bowser in Super Mario 64).

No need for spoiler tags I presume?

I'm not so sure that the interlude with David would be the segment of the story they should cut (if any). I also disagree that the amount of non-infected Joel kills to survive and/or save Ellie (as it concerns the Fireflies) should be down-played (though obviously the sheer numbers won't come close to matching up with the game), if only because that's who Joel is/was (he used to be one of those people who would prey on the helpless, after all).

David is the only real antagonist in the story, and in some ways, is the 'price' Joel and Ellie pay for their actions. It's also the moment where the relationship between Joel & Ellie is solidified, and the surrogate parent aspect is cemented. David and Joel can almost be viewed as two sides of the same coin, in some respects. This is to say nothing of how tense and dramatic this sequence is, as a whole.

Beyond that, I've thought some more about the casting. These would be my choices for the majority of the main and supporting cast:

Troy Parker has mentioned that he based aspects of Joel's character on Brolin's character from No Country for Old Men, and I can definitely see that showing through in the game itself. And, I mean...

John Hawkes as David...

W. Earl Brown as Bill (he was also the voice-actor for the character in the game)...

Nicole Beharie (from Sleepy Hollow on FOX) as Marlene...

And Jerome Flynn as Robert, since they pretty much look identical...

As for Ellie, I've seen Hailee Steinfeld (from the re-make of True Grit) mentioned quite a few times, but part of me thinks they'll go with an unknown (or relatively unknown) actress. Still, I wouldn't be opposed if she were cast...

It would be like an hommage to her road trip with The Hound.

Anyway posted this in Video games thread, but thought it would be appropriate here too.

Alternate ending sequence for The Last of Us?
