What was written by George, and what by Elio and Linda?

Recommended Posts

Well, the title sums it up. All three are named as authors in the cover posted on Not a Blog, and I'm wondering, how was it divided? Did George write the outlines, and Elio and Linda transformed that into the "maester writing to Robert" format? Or were each of them left with a specific part of the book?

We wrote the initial outline and first draft. George filled most areas where there were major holes, and then some. In particular, the material related to the central and eastern regions are mostly his work, since that's just simply something we wouldn't know about, while stuff nearer to Westeros is more of a patchwork of us and GRRM, as he expanded on our draft.

Outside of one extended piece, most of the Targaryen info is from us, synopsizing George's Targaryen history.

Ancient history material is mostly us, with the exception of the material on the Rhoynar as he had a lot of new details there.

We were contracted for 50,000 words. We wrote... uh, maybe 600% more than that, of which over 150k will be in the book, and I have no idea how many tens of thousands are in the app (yes, the data that initially seeded the app was originally destined for the print book :)
