MrsManderly
random guess: wedding cloak? failing that - is it an item of clothing (shoes and other apparel including)?
TheMalcolm
Wedding cloaks were quite definitely seen in several books, I won't have a doubt about these. And what metal parts these might have, buttons? I doubt. 9. Not an item of clothing.

Castellan
So, is it something that only nobles have, and are nobles basically highborn people? PS I was thinking only nobles are ransomed, but ransoms would be mostly metal (money).
TheMalcolm
10. It is something only highborn have. Hint: much more important is that is something only highborn use. It would be of no value to a farmer, even if he managed to have it somehow.
MrsManderly
is it something to do with books/letters/writing? scrap that -- would probably fit into shoebox something to do with domestic chores/personal hygiene?
yomi
something to do with domestic chores/personal hygiene? What kind of domestic chore / personal hygiene stuff couldn't be useful for smallfolk, too? Is it usually owned by noble males?
TheMalcolm
What kind of domestic chore / personal hygiene stuff couldn't be useful for smallfolk, too? Agreed. 11. Usually used by noble males, still could be owned by noble females.
TheMalcolm
is it something to do with books/letters/writing? scrap that -- would probably fit into shoebox Books won't fit into shoebox, it's needful to mention for future, but books have no metal parts. MrsManderly
couple of comments: - privies and chamberpots were only used by nobles, as were knives and forks, so that fits the description- books did actually have metal bindings and buckles on them- as frequently did cloaks All that said, no further ideas from me!
