Trigger Warning
Because he was a young commander, so he would have needed to command respect somehow. Being the head of House Stark would obviously help. Plus, I might be wrong, but I'm sure it tells us somewhere in the novels that he leads from the front. Even if you lead from the front it doesn't automatically mean you're particularly good in single combat. You could be particularly poor at it and still survive on horseback in full plate, surrounded by your retinue.
LordQorgyle
He is the first rabger because he is a Stark and being a ranger wasn't that dangerous before the others came so no he isn't above average and i bet Ned is way better than him
The Fresh PtwP
The same Benjen with 15 years of experience fighting beyond the wall and dedicating his life to it. Yea it would unrealistic if Benjen couldn't shit on useless characters like Kettleblack and Meryn Trant; No because they were all portrayed as good fighters. Unlike Meryn Trant/Kettleblack who are useless and weak. Also yea Jon has a pretty high chance of beating Beric or Jory IMO. Nobody has ever said that of either character. Jaime thinks Trant is sly and cruel. While Cersei thinks all the Kettleblacks are dangerous.
