The Fall (TV series)

I began watching season 2 last night, and about 12 minutes in, thought, "I am not up for the terrorizing of women and the terror provoked in me at all this peril, and the thought that yet more women are going to be so violated," and shut it off. Don't know if I'll come back to it.

I thought the first season was very good, if difficult watching. Just don't think I can put myself through it again. Also the Brit reaction to season 2 wasn't much more favorable than its reaction to the currently running season 2 of Broadchurch.

Those who have seen season 2 of The Fall -- if you think I should keep watching I'll think about what you say.

I was unaware of consensus negative view about broadchurch. I'm enjoying as much a season one and that seems to be the general view on the board.

If the treatment of women was the only reason you stopped watching then there's little reason to go back. There's a particularly harrowing scene in the penultimate episode but there's also several cases of men treating women like shit as well. While disturbing, I can appreciate it's a thematic thing that is going on and there's even some strange meta moments (at one point a character appears to be looking at the audience and asks "why are you watching this, you sick fuck"). I think the key thing is they are played out to make you uncomfortable as opposed to being sensational.

"I think the key thing is they are played out to make you uncomfortable as opposed to being sensational."

As to British response to series 2 of The Fall, and now series Broadchurch, I read the Brit reviewers and the comments to them'

That's a very important distinction, and one that makes a big difference -- unless it's about wanting me to be uncomfortable as sensation ????? It keeps going on doesn't it? Thank you so much for responding, because, while that was part of what was going on with Happy Valley, I just -- couldn't. And I'm someone who thinks Jane Tennison's Prime Suspect is prime, so it's not that I'm being all, well, whatever blahblahblah.

Good point on uncomfortable being a sensation. I guess it's negative at least. It is a very dark show and I can understand people not enjoying it. There's no point watching somethng (regardless of how good others say it is) if you don't enjoy watching it. I had to give up on the Michael Palin BBC "ghost" show because I've got the point where I don't like sitting around waiting to be scared shitless. I've been told it was a great show but what's the point if I can't enjoy it?

I'd be cautious of British press for reviewing things. They love to build things up - their coverage over the "secrecy" of season 2 was rabid, and then tear it apart. It's what the masses want, often because that's what the media had them expect. I mean, some of the complaints at the legal side of the show are as if every TV show up until jan 2015 had a perfect representation of court rooms. Wake-up (the world, not you zorral). When it comes to TV I tend to rely more on word of mouth than the press - especially with british shows.

Damn, I didn't know there was a new series of Broadchurch! Now I don't know if I should watch it or not. Does anyone here recommend / not recommend it based on what they've watched so far?

If you find the depiction of the ill treatment of women too upsetting then I think that's reason enough not to keep watching. No programme is so brilliant that it justifies forcing yourself to watch it despite your every instinct telling you not to.

I guess everyone has their own thing they can't stand. I hate the way GRRM sexually objectifies or seemingly leers at so many of his female characters (as distinct from, say, one of his male characters doing so). It makes me cringe and it bothers me that so many readers seem not to notice this, or maybe think it's okay. With The Fall though, Stella is so articulate in expressing her disgust at and never misses an opportunity to call out anyone's unacceptable / appalling behaviour towards these women / herself. I kind of found it affirming in a way, and distinct from any other murder drama I've seen in its repeated rejection of any of this behaviour (including the lesser slights) towards women.

I think it's also interesting how Stella uses men too. always with their consent and not necessarily assuming they want her but she is a sexual predator never-the-less. The show is very much about power and how people (usually men) lash out to try and compensate for their lack of it. Stella is someone who is intrinsically powerful and it's fascinating to see how she uses it and how others respond to it.

I agree. One of the most interesting characters that I've seen on TV recently.

I'd love to see more of Gibson, but I really hope they don't try to pull off a season 3 centered around Spector. I don't feel like a follow-up to the season 2 cliffhanger is necessary (I don't care too much about what happens to Spector, and I think the season 2 ending fits alright with the tone of the show, even with so many unanswered questions), but I'd gladly take another season or three of Stella working various cases in the U.K. or beyond.

They could go the court case route and find it all falls apart. It wouldn't be the only uk show to take that option. Maybe that's Spector's long game which would still seem a bit silly. I do feel as though Spector never made full use of stella's diary given he seems to want to humiliate her but maybe he has some convoluted plan of doing so in court.

.

Depending on how successful "shades of grey" is the actor who plays Spector may be making the jump from tv to permanent film acting. Not sure that's the film that will launch him but he does seem to be more than a pretty face which is usually a bonus in hollywood.

That's a really good point. She's predatory, and she sleeps with a number of people over the 2 series (3?), but she's also not damned as being a 'slut', which is also refreshing. There's also her refusal to lead anyone on, or mislead them in order to get them to sleep with her. I think the first guy (Olsen?) tried to accuse her of leading him on when he didn't get his way later, but instead he comes across looking stupid and entitled for imagining a relationship might have blossomed under such circumstances, and then we find out he had a wife, which he'd also failed to mention. In some ways she's this really interesting, complex character, and yet in other ways she's so straightforward and uncomplicated, like her approach to sex.

I reckon that would a good way of doing a third series (the spoiler-ed text). I think it would be such a shame to end such a good show on such an abrupt and unsatisfying note.

If they go the court case route, I hope they have Stella working on another case with the Spector spectacle more secondary. The show has already done the two storylines at once thing, with the random dirty cop plotline in season 1 and the gang guy chasing after his wife in season 2, so I think it could be pulled off well. That would be my ideal season 3.

I have a feeling 50 Shades is going to flop big in the long run, and none of the actors in it are going to take off in the same way that the Twilight (for example) stars did. But that's just me. Dornan will certainly be in the headlines over the next couple of months.

But it looks like there is hope for a third season:

For now, fans of “The Fall” will be happy to know we haven’t seen the last of Stella Gibson.

“There’s most likely going to be a Season 3,” Anderson assures. “What’s great is that we have so many options in terms of where to take her story.”

My feeling is 50 Shades will be critically panned, but will still do well in the box office as people will be curious to see all the kinky stuff portrayed on screen. Well fingers crossed it flops then and we can all go back to watching Spector in The Fall Part 3. :P

Thanks for the link, good news it'll most likely come back then. I also noticed on IMDB that The Fall is still listed as "2013 - ", so it would appear it wasn't the producers' intention that what we saw was the end of the story.

I've thought of this everytime I've seen or read something about the film and been hoping you'd be right. I had a look on IMDB and the first film's got a 4.2 rating. 4.2! That's even worse than Twilight.

And... BBC confirms The Fall will return for a third series ! (And mercifully it will be the final series.) :commie:

To be honest, I'm surprised the rating is not even lower haha. I've read some things over the past month or so that indicate that even the actors are sorta disgusted by the movie, so I think the franchise might just die, without any more movies or anything. One can hope.

I'm a bit bummed that season 3 will once again focus on Spector. My hope was that the Spector storyline would be background, with a new case in the forefront. I guess we'll see. I am happy that we will get more Stella Gibson though!

It's starting to bug me that every good show ever is available on Netflix for American viewers, but not available on Netflix UK. The Fall, Broadchurch, Agents of SHIELD, it sucks!!

Have you not seen it yet Nox? You should!!

Amazon prime has almost all of those in the UK. Plus BBC had the fall first (they just have an odd system of only having things on iplayer for a month or occasional random availability)

Well it's all about the money isn't it. The majority of cinema viewers could hate it, but if enough people pay to go out of curiousity then maybe it'll still be worth making the other 2. Let's hope not, eh!

Thanks for the tip. The main thing for me is I wanted to rewatch series 1 of all of the above. Particularly Broadchurch's first series before I watched series 2 as I'd forgotten pretty much everything of the first series. I'm glad BBC re-aired the first series of The Fall just before series 2 as there was so much I'd forgotten.
