The books coming out in 2015

They are indeed back in business, yep; just been looking at their stuff on amazon. They have a full slate out into next summer, and a lot of it is new material, not just reprints -- including next books by several of the authors who were under contract with them when they went under. Their biggest recent thing seems to be Veil of the Deserters by Salyards, which is the sequel to Scourge of the Betrayer -- military fantasy that stirred up some excitement a couple years ago. Amazon also claims Night Shade's publishing an edition of Bradley Beaulieu's third novel in that epic fantasy series based in part on Finnish myth this October, and I don't know how that could possibly be because he negotiated his rights back and self-published it like a year ago when they were imploding. It also looks like they're doing paperbacks of Mazarkis Williams' series starting with The Emperor's Knife, which is of interest to me because I heard those were really good but I couldn't quite bring myself to spend hardcover money. So Night Shade's totally around. But, and this is subjective, it feels to me like, though they're back in business as a publishing house, their books aren't back in the conversation in a big way yet. I don't think I've yet seen reviewers / readers going apeshit over anything new from this relaunched Night Shade, and that used to happen all the time. Feels a lot like what seems to have happened to Pyr.

Thanks for mentioning Veil. I don't know what kind of footprint Neo Night Shade is going to have, but they are still very much alive and kicking. Another publisher bought the rights to a large number of their titles and kept the imprint going, and as you pointed out, they have plans to publish a lot of new material.

I'm biased, of course, but I do hope they can generate some interest again. The original Night Shade put out a lot of cool stuff, and the new folks seem keen on continuing that tradition.

Sadly, it doesn't appear that Daw, or any other house, is making plans to bring Lagoon, her sf novel set in Lagos, to the States anytime soon -- it's published by Hodder in the UK.

Lagoon will be published in the US by Saga Press in July 2015 - http://www.amazon.com/Lagoon-Nnedi-Okorafor-ebook/dp/B00O65X836/

Right now only the ebook is listed but i'm pretty sure the hardcover/paperback listing will be up soon.

Hi Jeff, nice to see you here.Love your series,i'm a fan. I know that book #2 came out a few months ago but do you have any news regarding the expected publication date of book #3 ? 2015 or 2016 ? :)

Thanks so much! I'm really glad you are enjoying the series. With any luck, Chains of the Heretic will be out November 2015. I've made pretty decent progress on the draft so far, but with a day job and three kids at home, it's always a bit of a crapshoot. :)

@Maester Llama: Brad Beaulieu re-sold his print rights to his Lays of Anuskaya trilogy to Skyhorse (the print part of the publisher duo that bought Night Shade), so yes, they're publishing a new edition of #3. Brad retains e-rights for the books.

On Stina Leicht's Fey and the Fallen books: the two published books form a relatively self-contained story - or at least I thought so! No need to wait for a third to read them (they are indeed excellent).

The above post reminded me of something.

Not sure if this has been mentioned earlier, but Courtney Schafer's final book in her Shattered Sigil series, labyrinth of Flame will be out in ebook in February. She will be doing a kickstarter campaign then. I for one, will be participating as I can't wait see how it concludes!

Aw, thanks, Guinevere! Always great to hear someone's eager for the big finale. One tiny correction - the kickstarter for The Labyrinth of Flame will be in mid-February but the book will still need to go through copyedit & layout/conversion afterward, so ebooks won't be out right away. They will go out to backers the instant the files are ready, though (with physical copies shipping soon after, for those who want them).

Ironically enough, though Night Shade isn't the publisher for this 3rd book, I'm pretty much using all ex-Night-Shade folks to produce it. (Same artist, same cover designer, etc, as did the first books in the series.) So it's kind of like the old Night Shade is doing the book, except everyone's getting paid on time. :P

Definitely. Although there is still enough left unanswered that I'm really hoping to read the final book one day. Even book one by itself was relatively self-contained. What an amazing blend of setting and magic though - a story well told.

Hopefully somebody will remind us here when your kickstarter goes live ;)

Julia Knight's Swords and Scoundrels, first book in the Duellists Trilogy, will be published by Orbit in October 2015.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swords-Scoundrels-Duellists-Trilogy-Knight/dp/0356504077/

Here is the synopsis:

Gold is for fools, and dying is for amateurs...

Vocho and Kacha are champion duellists: a brother and sister known for the finest swordplay in the city of Reyes. Or at least they used to be - until they were thrown out of the Duellist's Guild. Now all that's left to them is to become reluctant highwaymen. Well - it's a living, and for Vocho it's a way to win back some form of notoriety. But when they pick the wrong carriage to rob, their simple plans to win back fame and fortune go south fast.

After facing down three armed men and barely besting a powerful magician, Vocho and Kacha make off with an immense locked chest. Vocho is convinced it must be worth a fortune, perhaps enough to buy him and his sister back the lives he lost for them when he inadvertently killed a priest. But the contents of the chest will bring them much more than they've bargained for - when they soon find themselves embroiled in a dangerous plot to return an angry king to power.

SWORDS AND SCOUNDRELS is the first book in the Duellists trilogy - a fast-paced adventure from one of the most exciting new British talents in fantasy.

Pan Macmillan to publish The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks by the show’s co-creator, Mark Frost

Pan Macmillan has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, a novel by Mark Frost, the co-creator and executive producer of the cult show. Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, will be the US publisher, making this a global story for the group.

The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks reveals what has happened to the people of that iconic fictional town since we last saw them twenty-five years ago and offers a deeper glimpse into the central mystery that was only touched on by the original series.

Pan Macmillan will publish in late autumn 2015 in advance of the TV series.

Queen of Fire (Raven's Shadow #3) by Anthony Ryan

blurb:

In the thrilling conclusion to the “deftly and originally executed” (Booklist) New York Times bestselling trilogy, Vaelin Al Sorna must help his Queen reclaim her Realm. Only his enemy has a dangerous new collaborator, one with powers darker than Vaelin has ever encountered…

“The Ally is there, but only ever as a shadow, unexplained catastrophe or murder committed at the behest of a dark vengeful spirit. Sorting truth from myth is often a fruitless task.”

After fighting back from the brink of death, Queen Lyrna is determined to repel the invading Volarian army and regain the independence of the Unified Realm. Except, to accomplish her goals, she must do more than rally her loyal supporters. She must align herself with forces she once found repugnant—those who possess the strange and varied gifts of the Dark—and take the war to her enemy’s doorstep.

Victory rests on the shoulders of Vaelin Al Sorna, now named Battle Lord of the Realm. However, his path is riddled with difficulties. For the Volarian enemy has a new weapon on their side, one that Vaelin must destroy if the Realm is to prevail—a mysterious Ally with the ability to grant unnaturally long life to her servants. And defeating one who cannot be killed is a nearly impossible feat, especially when Vaelin’s blood-song, the mystical power which has made him the epic fighter he is, has gone ominously silent…

The Price of Valor (Shadow Campaigns #3) by Django Wexler

In the latest Shadow Campaigns novel, Django Wexler continues his “epic fantasy of military might and magical conflict”* following The Shadow Throne and The Thousand Names, as the realm of Vordan faces imminent threats from without and within.

In the wake of the King’s death, war has come to Vordan.

The Deputies-General has precarious control of the city, but it is led by a zealot who sees traitors in every shadow. Executions have become a grim public spectacle. The new queen, Raesinia Orboan, finds herself nearly powerless as the government tightens its grip and assassins threaten her life. But she did not help free the country from one sort of tyranny to see it fall into another. Placing her trust with the steadfast soldier Marcus D’Ivoire, she sets out to turn the tide of history.

As the hidden hand of the Sworn Church brings all the powers of the continent to war against Vordan, the enigmatic and brilliant general Janus bet Vhalnich offers a path to victory. Winter Ihernglass, newly promoted to command a regiment, has reunited with her lover and her friends, only to face the prospect of leading them into bloody battle.

And the enemy is not just armed with muskets and cannon. Dark priests of an ancient order, wielding forbidden magic, have infiltrated Vordan to stop Janus by whatever means necessary…

The Liar's Key (Red Queen's War #2) by Mark Lawrence

Prince of Fools, The Red Queen’s War: Book One had all “the hallmarks of [Mark Lawrence’s] storytelling and writing style which made The Broken Empire trilogy such an incredibly addictive read” (Bibliosanctum.com). Now, The Liar’s Key continues the story of the unusual fellowship between a rogue prince and a weary warrior…

After harrowing adventure and near-death, Prince Jalan Kendeth and the Viking Snorri ver Snagason find themselves in possession of Loki’s Key, an artefact capable of opening any door, and sought by the most dangerous beings in the Broken Empire—including The Dead King.

Jal wants only to return home to his wine, women, and song, but Snorri has his own purpose for the key: to find the very door into death, throw it wide, and bring his family back into the land of the living.

And as Snorri prepares for his quest to find death’s door, Jal’s grandmother, the Red Queen continues to manipulate kings and pawns towards an endgame of her own design…

Beyond Redemption (Manifest Delusion #1) by Michael R. Fletcher (Harper Voyager)

On Sale Date: June 16, 2015

A darkly imaginative writer in the tradition of Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, and Neil Gaiman conjures a gritty mind-bending fantasy, set in a world where delusion becomes reality . . . and the fulfillment of humanity’s desires may well prove to be its undoing

When belief defines reality, those with the strongest convictions—the crazy, the obsessive, the delusional—have the power to shape the world.

And someone is just mad enough to believe he can create a god . . .

Violent and dark, the world is filled with the Geistrekranken—men and women whose delusions manifest. Sustained by their own belief—and the beliefs of those around them—they can manipulate their surroundings. For the High Priest Konig, that means creating order out of the chaos in his city-state, leading his believers to focus on one thing: helping a young man, Morgen, ascend to become a god. A god they can control.

Trouble is, there are many who would see a god in their thrall, including the High Priest’s own doppelgangers, a Slaver no one can resist, and three slaves led by possibly the only sane man left.

As these forces converge on the boy, there’s one more obstacle: time is running out. Because as the delusions become more powerful, the also become harder to control. The fate of the Geistrekranken is to inevitably find oneself in the Afterdeath. The question, then, is:

Who will rule there?

Twelve Kings in Sharakhai (Song of the Shattered Sands #1) by Bradley P. Beaulieu (August 2015,DAW)

blurb:

In the cramped west end of Sharakhai, the Amber Jewel of the Desert, Çeda fights in the pits to scrape a living. She, like so many in the city, pray for the downfall of the cruel, immortal Kings of Sharakhai, but she's never been able to do anything about it.

This all changes when she goes out on the night of Beht Zha'ir, the holy night when all are forbidden from walking the streets. It's the night that the asirim, the powerful yet wretched creatures that protect the Kings from all who would stand against them, wander the city and take tribute. It is then that one of the asirim, a pitiful creature who wears a golden crown, stops Çeda and whispers long forgotten words into her ear. Çeda has heard those words before, in a book left to her by her mother, and it is through that one peculiar link that she begins to find hidden riddles left by her mother.

As Çeda begins to unlock the mysteries of that fateful night, she realizes that the very origin of the asirim and the dark bargain the Kings made with the gods of the desert to secure them may be the very key she needs to throw off the iron grip the Kings have had over Sharakhai. And yet the Kings are no fools—they've ruled the Shangazi for four hundred years for good reason, and they have not been idle. As Çeda digs into their past, and the Kings come closer and closer to unmasking her, Çeda must decide if she's ready to face them once and for all.

Slow Bullets by Alastair Reynolds (June 9, 2015)

From the author of the Revelation Space series comes an interstellar adventure of war, identity, betrayal, and the preservation of civilization itself.

A vast conflict, one that has encompassed hundreds of worlds and solar systems, appears to be finally at an end. A conscripted soldier is beginning to consider her life after the war and the family she has left behind. But for Scur-and for humanity-peace is not to be.

On the brink of the ceasefire, Scur is captured by a renegade war criminal, and left for dead in the ruins of a bunker. She revives aboard a prisoner transport vessel. Something has gone terribly wrong with the ship.

Passengers-combatants from both sides of the war-are waking up from hibernation far too soon. Their memories, embedded in bullets, are the only links to a world which is no longer recognizable. And Scur will be reacquainted with her old enemy, but with much higher stakes than just her own life.

Hannu Rajaniemi: Collected Fiction (May 12, 2015)

Inside the firewall the city is alive. Buildings breathe, cars attack, angels patrol, and hyper-intelligent pets rebel.

With unbridled invention and breakneck adventure, Hannu Rajaniemi is on the cutting-edge of science fiction. His post-apocalyptic, post-cyberpunk, and post-human tales are full of exhilarating energy and unpredictable optimism.

How will human nature react when the only limit to desire is creativity? When the distinction between humans and gods is as small as nanomachines-or as large as the universe? Whether the next big step in technology is 3D printing, genetic alteration, or unlimited space travel, Rajaniemi writes about what happens after.

The Goddess of Buttercups and Daisies by Martin Millar (April/May 2015)

Aristophanes is inconsolable-his rival playwrights are hogging all the local attention, a pesky young wannabe poet won't leave him alone, his actors can't remember their lines, and his own festival sponsor seems to be conspiring against him, withholding direly needed funds for set design and, most importantly, giant phallus props. O woe, how can his latest comedy convince Athenian citizens to vote down another ten years of war against Sparta if they're too busy scoffing at the diminutive phalluses? And why does everyone in the city-state seem to be losing their minds?

Wallowing in one inconvenience after another, Aristophanes is unaware that the Spartan and Athenian generals have unleashed Laet, the spirit of foolishness and bad decisions, to inspire chaos and war-mongering in Athens. To counteract Laet's influence, Athena sends Bremusa, an Amazon warrior, and Metris, an endearingly airheaded nymph (their first choice was her mother Metricia, but she grew tired of all the fighting and changed back into a river).

Dashing between fantastical scenes of moody and meddlesome gods, ever-applicable political debates in the senate, backstage scrambling for the play, and glimpses of life in Ancient Greece, Martin Millar delivers another witty and comical romp for readers of all ages.

The Off Season by Jack Cady (July 14, 2015)

There is a curse on Point Vestal. Time moves differently in this sleepy Northwestern coastal town, where the ghosts of the past roam the streets as readily as the living inhabitants. It's still the late 19th century, and underneath the quaint touristy allure of the commingling of the past and present is a lurking darkness. August Starling, a decadent (and dead) crime baron, has a plan for Point Vestal because the magical nature of the town is a haven for sinners fleeing judgment for their crimes. And the only residents who can stop him are newcomers to town: a defrocked Episcopalian priest and a talking cat, who is fluent in seven languages.

The Off Season is an effusive meditation on the nature of the fantastic, by a writer the Atlanta Constitution calls "a lasting voice in modern American literature." Cady, winner of both the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award, has given us "a consummate yarn, told with many digressions and anecdotes that combine with folksy humor to create a tall tale suffused with pathos and melancholy." (The Seattle Times)

Archangel by Marguerite Reed (May 12, 2015)

Strong appeal to fans of James S. A. Corey, Anne Leckie, Iain M. Banks, David Weber, and Lois McMaster Bujold
• For fans of Avatar, Serenity, and Battlestar Galactica
• Deals with ecological issues like those portrayed in Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl and Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake

The Earth is dying, and our hopes are pinned on Ubastis, an untamed paradise at the edge of colonized space. But such an influx of people threatens the planet's unstudied ecosystem - a tenuous research colony must complete its analysis, lest humanity abandon one planet only to die on another.

The Ubasti colonists barely get by on their own. To acquire the tools they need, they are relegated to selling whatever they can to outside investors. For xenobiologist Vashti Loren, this means bringing Offworlders on safari to hunt the specimens she and her fellow biologists so desperately need to study.

Haunted by the violent death of her husband, the heroic and celebrated Lasse Undset, Vashti must balance the needs of Ubastis against the swelling crush of settlers. Vashti struggles in her role as one of the few colonists licensed to carry deadly weapons, just as she struggles with her history of using them. And when she discovers a genetically engineered soldier smuggled onto the surface, Vashti must face the nightmare of her husband's murder all over again. Standing at the threshold of humanity's greatest hope, she alone understands the darkness of guarding paradise.

The End of the End of Everything: Stories by Dale Bailey (March 17, 2015)

Contains "The End of the World as We Know It," which was nominated for a Nebula Award and an International Horror Guild Award
• Contains "The Bluehole," which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award
• The author is part of the reinvigoration of literary horror (which includes Laird Baron, recent winner of the Bram Stoker Award, and Nathan Ballingrud, recent winner of the Shirley Jackson Award)

Dale Bailey's new collection, The End of the End of Everything, is filled with hope. As we rush headlong toward a "Choose Your Own Apocalypse" future, Bailey hangs back, refusing to let go of the indelible ferocity of the human heart. His stories are filled with the vibrant sound of those hearts, always beating. There is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, who is more human than any of those he meets in Hollywood; Eleanor, who works at the End-of-the-World Café, and who sees the depravity and despair of the Pit every day, yet never gives up hope for her ailing child; and young Tom, lost in a world scorched by the sun, who follows the rumor of angels still hanging on the wind.

Reminiscent of Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson, Dale Bailey mixes the macabre in with his melancholy, crafting stories that linger long after their reading. He sees a dark world that is growing darker, but he carries with him a light that refuses to go out.

Finders Keepers by Stephen King will be released in June 2015:

A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far—a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes.

“Wake up, genius.” So begins King’s instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, a Salinger-like icon who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Sauberg finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he’s released from prison after thirty-five years.

Not since Misery has King played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also King writing about how literature shapes a life—for good, for bad, forever.

Baen/Solaris/Games Workshop summer 2015 catalog.

Tor UK spring/summer 2015 catalog. Adrian Tchaikovsky's science fiction novel Children of Time will be published in July 2015.
