oopeed
I don't know, even for recently modern standards that's a high number... Population explosion only came in the last 150 years with the advancements in energy and food production.Yeah, the romans were of the kind that could spare a million-men strong army as they liked to toss soldiers on massive scales but they empire was one of the largest on history. Disease, fire, floods, dragons, dothraki and dooms seem to run rampant on Planetos. Even in the 16th century there wasn't that much people on the world and we're talking about renaissance era. I don't think even Londinium, Paris or Constantinople had over a million habitants.
Game Of Thrones
Well, Paris had only 200,000 inhabitants in the MA but KL has 500,000, so it appears cities in Planetos are much larger than irl. Also, Chinese cities in the Middle Ages regularly reached 800,000. SeanF
Ghiscar has a big hinterland, so I suspect the population numbers would be bigger. Qarth, too. Overall, I'd expect Essos to have a bigger population than Westeros.

Arakan
Ran said it somewhere. Try using google.Sorry but thats no source. Nevermind. I think the 40m is quite reasonable (disagree with some of the city populations) but confirmed in my book means there is a canon source. And your recommendation "try using google" is quite rude. If you say it's confirmed you should provide the source.
Frey Pie
I would say the north has slightly more, along with the riverlands and crown lands, while the west and Stormland's should be lower. As for Essos I have no idea where you got your numbers but off the top of my head volantis and braavos should be biggest so right you are

Bright Blue Eyes
No reasoning, no sources. And some figures that this way are not reasonable at all. Try again. Ran said it somewhere. Try using google. No, that's no confirmation. Ran is not GRRM, and during that video he explicitly states that he just guesses. I don't know, even for recently modern standards that's a high number... Population explosion only came in the last 150 years with the advancements in energy and food production. It's quite a low number. Europe, at about half the landmass, featured 73 million inhabitants in 1300, got dented down to 45 millions thanks to the Black Death and was back to 78 millions in 1550. Europe, at about half the landmass, featured 73 million inhabitants in 1300, got dented down to 45 millions thanks to the Black Death and was back to 78 millions in 1550. Westeros is actually a bit smaller than Europe in terms of landmass (the Wall is a legit scale for measuring its size according to GRRM http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Entry/2787), so 40 million makes sense. The Holy Goat
Well, if we were to go with the 40,000,000 numbers (I wager it's twice that number though). Also, most large castle complexes (Winterfell, Casterly Rock, Harrenhal, the Red Keep, Highgarden etc) can likely comfortably house populations in the thousands or tens of thousands within their walls or in towns outside. I won't list them though, I will list some of the smaller towns with populations in the thousands. Ingelheim
I think you are giving the Free Cities a completely unreal population. It's impossible for a medieval city to reach 1.5 million.
