Can't even express how happy I am that team Helsinki won in the end.

It's surprisingly hard not to get all hyped about something that'll happen in two years but I think I'll start making my plans well ahead of time. There isn't really much I need to do, besides getting the membership, booking the accommodation and then hopping on a train when the time comes. Oh, and of course I'll have to threaten various people into joining me in the con. :)

Really looking forward to planning a trip around this. I had tentative plans to go on a European vacation next summer, but I think I will wait until 2017 now and end it in Helsinki. And...this may be the first time since Montreal that I will be able to attend the whole convention! Yay!

And wedding!

Awesome, will be great to meet you! I'm pretty excited now I've got to say, started looking at the area last night. Helsinki/Finnland are new for me as well, although I've already done the Talinn trip on a ferry from Sweden.  Maybe splurge on the hotel if we can get it!

I'll have to start saving my miles to make it to helsinki!  I have 13 months to cobble them together, so that should work.

I didn't realize that Helsinki was so close to st petersburg, I may have to see if I can work that into a trip too! Or Amsterdam/Coppenhagen... I'll probably only have 8 days so really can only make it to 1 city.

Edit: I'll make a post on how to travel there on miles.  Should be pretty easily doable for most people - 60K round trip, that's probably regular spending and a direct tv subscription or something.

I got slighly discouraged by all the paperwork needed to get into Russia. Might opt for Tallin instead.

Strangely, this morning a colleague was talking about her visit to Moscow next year, and mentioned the visas you need for Russia. We were hoping to stay longer, and so were considering popping over to St Petersburg, as well as Sweden.

That's fantastic Brook! :D

This is definitely a possibility for us, have wanted to visit Finland for a while. Better start saving!

I'll make sure we finally meet this time! Less actually doing stuff and more socialising :)

I was thinking about Sweden as well, particularly as I didn't get the chance to hop over there whilst at Archipelacon this year. :D

Yes! We're hoping to have at least a week there, staying at a nearby hotel, so no excuses this time! :P

Sam: I have a friend who lives near Stockholm, whom I'd love to see again. She recently moved back to Sweden after living in England for 10 years, so she could probably point us to a few places to go. We could do a group trip over to Sweden if people are keen - ensures everyone's safe, at least while travelling :)

BwB party in Helsinki must feature a sauna, followed by icy plunges into nearby water.  Fire and Ice......

I'm afraid that finding icy water in August will probably be really hard. Unless you are talking about a spa or something, but lakes & the sea are usually around + 20 C at that time of the year.

It will be epic and I will recruit you guys for the GoT panels.

That would be cool. Phil and Targh I think stayed in Stockholm before Archipelacon, so they might have suggestions on where to go.

Edit: Just bought my membership! :)

Awesome! :D Our memberships will have to wait a while, but we're totally keen. And it looks fairly cheap - the Holiday Inn looks reasonable even without a cheaper con rate. I'm so excited! We definitely want to visit some museums, explore the local history and culture.

I was also in Stockholm for a couple of days before Archipelacon, I liked the city a lot and there were more interesting-looking things to do than there was time to do them in. I think I'd probably go somewhere other than Helsinki before or after the Con, I might consider seeing a bit more more of Stockholm, although I might also consider places I've never been to like Talinn or St Petersburg.

There are cheap Ryanair flights to Stockholm (or somewhere in the vague vicinity of Stockholm) from Stansted, which was very convenient for traveling from Cambridge and I guess would also be convenient for you. I think to get to Helsinki directly would require flying via Heathrow.

I liked the ferry journey from Stockholm to Marieham (where Archipelicon was), going through the Stockholm Archipelago was very scenic, and I guess the ferry from Stockholm to mainland Finland would take a similar route (I think some of them go via Marieham).
