So here we are with a new thread.

We have massive police raids, shootings of alleged terrorists, dangerous criminal organisation legislation, budget woes and serial bullshit from those in office.

Time for some levity, and not without relevance to the topics at hand, I think:

When I was a boy, just about-a eighth-a grade
Mama used to say, don't-a stay out late
With the bad-a boys always shoot-a pool
Gonna flunk-a school

Boy, it make-a me sick all the things I gotta do
Can't-a getta no kicks, always gotta follow rules
Boy, it make-a me sick, just-a make a lousy bucks
I gotta feel like a fool
(And mama used to say)

What'sa matta you, hey
Gotta no respect, whatta you think you do
Why you looka so sad?
It's-a not so bad, it's-a nice-a place
Ah, shaddap you face

Soon-a come-a day, gonna be-a big-a star
Gonna make a movies, buy a nice-a car
But still-a be myself, I'm-a never change a thing
Always dance and sing
('Cause I remember mama used to say)

What'sa matta you, hey
Gotta no respect, whatta you think you do
Why you looka so sad?
It's-a not so bad, it's-a nice-a place
Ah, shaddap you face

Hello everybody, that's out there in radio and television land
Did you know I had a bit hit song in Italy with this 'Shaddap You Face'
I sing this song and all my fans applaud
They clap their hands that make me feel so good
You ought to learn this song, it's really simple

I sing 'Whatsa Matta You', you sing 'Hey'
You sing the rest and at the end
We can all sing 'Ah, Shaddap You Face'
Okay, let's try it, really big Uno, Duo, Tre, Quatro

What'sa matta you, hey
Gotta no respect, whatta you think you do
Why you looka so sad?
It's-a not so bad, it's-a nice-a place
Ah, shaddap you face

I've just watched the news report about the poor French guy who had worked as a guide for 20 years in the Algerian mountains. Kidnapped and beheaded in response to the call from ISIL to attack citizens of nations who are part of the coalition. I assume last week's comment about being afraid in your bedroom is a call for Muslims married to non-Muslims to kill their spouses.

ETA: And has the crisis level in Australia dropped at all?

I assume the crisis level will drop when Tony's ratings recover. Only to rise again shortly before the next election.

That was my thought, too, I just didn't have the words.

The cynicism is strong in this one. Not wrong, but still strong. ;)

When I worked for Centrelink, I used to say "I wouldn't have developed cynicism, if it wasn't a survival trait"

I'm just terrified that people are swallowing what is blatantly political actions as a credible threat they need to be scared of, and run to the right wing. Not to mention that driving a wedge through the community and stoking anti Muslim hate is both disgusting and really bad for us.

Whilst much of the hysteria is unnecessary and overblown, I do think the current situation is somewhat different to Howard's cynical and repetitive appeals to the racist, xenophobic undercurrents prevalent in our society. ISIS' entreaties have proven to have more instant appeal and sway amongst its target audience than AQ. We don't have the details of the two major incidents from the past week, but clearly, the allegations are serious and directly related to events in the middle east. There was far less justification for Howard's actions when compared to what Abbott is facing now. I'm no supporter of Abbott, but I don't think he could have just pretended that it's all business as usual.
