Might it also be referring to the loss of his legs? He won't learn to walk again, but he'll gain the ability to "fly", something that's even better. The purpose explanation seems good to me as well though.

I think it's tied in - remember he wanted to be a soldier, Kingsguard or knight, way back in episode 1 of season 1? Robert said he was strong, he'll be a soldier, or something. Bran envisioned a similar purpose for himself which was destroyed when he lost the ability to walk.

good point King Tyrion. he has lost a lot.



and, even as JonBranRickon posted, it could be a reference to a knowledge that people on Westeros have lost, a knowledge of the past.



I'm not going to agree with any bloody Ice dragons though :D
