Well, I'd say that there is a certain possibility that he was somewhat close to court, but Barristan does not strike me as the kind of person who would hang around at court just to be there. He would go to court for tourneys, just as he would go to other castles, and there it is very likely that he was a rather strong Targaryen loyalist, but I guess he really won his White Cloak when he singlehandedly slew Maelys. Gerold Hightower would have suggested him to Jaehaerys II, especially if multiple KGs died on the Stepstones. I'd not be surprised if Prince Lewyn joined the KG at the same time, and that Doran's mother's stint as lady-in-waiting is somehow connected to that event.

I'd also suggest that 'the Princess of Dorne' was not the eldest child of the previous Prince(ss) of Dorne, explaining why she should spent at court at all instead of learning how to rule at the side of her father/mother.

I wonder if there is any possibility to Tywin being Gay/impotent/infertile. It would seem odder to me if it was either Tyrion or the twins who are bastards, maybe it's why he married his own cousin
