Unless he ran into Lyanna on the way North...

Interesting.. I guess it depends on how someone interprets "that would ultimately lead him back to the riverlands".... Does Yandel mean "back" as in "on his way back home", of in the sense of "back to where Rhaegar had been a year before"..?

Well Aegella or Aegaenys are not really pretty names.

You know, Aegella doesn't sound all too bad..

Rhaegar was at Dragonstone around the time of Aegon's birth, if the vision Dany saw can be believed. And the quote from TWOIAF is rather vague... Rhaegar might not have been in KL at all.. So either he left directly from Dragonstone, or he stopped shortly in King's Landing (he had to gather his six companions, they might not all have been on Dragonstone?), and from there to anywhere north of the Crownlands... You wouldn't reach the Riverlands otherwise, on you way back, right?

It was harsh weather, so yeah, his need was severe.. It was something that couldn't wait... Was it about the promised prince prophecy? Possible, I guess... Perhaps he wanted to find some info before making his next move, which involved Lyanna...

He won´t have travelled to the Wall to see or speak with Aemon.. Aemon's words in Braavos suggest that their last communication was through letter.

Maybe he was trying to make it to Brandon's wedding.

If Rhaegar was looking for Lyanna in the Riverlands, she's probably there because Brandon's wedding was upcoming. We know that Brandon left for KL to find Rhaegar just days before he was to wed Cat. Lyanna was abducted near Harrenhal by Rhaegar. So that places everyone in the Riverlands, in time for Brandon's wedding to Cat. (Also while I haven't read the World Book so I can't confirm this, but I've seen people say that Tom was with Rhaegar when he abducted Lyanna. Why travel with a singer, unless you're planning on attending a wedding?)

I see no reason why Brandon and his family would have lingered long in the Riverrun after marrying Cat, so Rhaegar seems to have been trying to get there in time for the wedding or before it. If he was looking for Lyanna, he'd know she'd probably be there or travelling there. If he was simply trying to observe the wedding as it was a major deal to be uniting House Stark and House Tully, again he'd be in the Riverlands trying to get to Brandon's wedding. No matter what though, I doubt anybody would have denied Rhaegar the right to attend the wedding.

So I think when Rhaegar set out, his goal was making Brandon's wedding. He simply chanced upon Lyanna first and didn't need to attend, or forgot that's what he was travelling to do.

That's not in the World Book ;) That's someone's theory, I guess..

The wording used in the quote suggests that quite some time passed between Rhaegar leaving, and him meeting Lyanna.. Not the time that passes between traveling from KL to Harrenhal.. Why would Rhaegar go to Brandon's wedding? Lyanna might have been at Harrenhal to both learn how to be lady-like (a parallel to how Arya was send to KL for the same reason), and to make friends with Brandon's soon-to-be in-laws. And, it would prevent anyone from having to escort Lyanna to and from Winterfell, after the tourney.. (though we don't have any confirmation yet that Lyanna remained at Harrenhal after the tourney...) Still, Harrenhal is not on the way from Winterfell to Riverrun - at all... So Lyanna wasn't travelling from Winterfell to Riverrun to get to Brandon's wedding.

Also, the fact remains that Lyanna hadn't left Harrenhal yet for Riverrun (or, she had just left, causing her to be ten leagues from Harrenhal). But between the "abduction" and Brandon's wedding day, some time passes (Brandon's imprisonment period), so there doesn't seem to have been a rush to get to Riverrun yet.. making it even more unlikely that Rhaegar was on his way to Riverrun, if you ask me... Why would Rhaegar go to Riverrun with the intention of staying there quite some time, when attending the wedding of a man that doesn't like him (and that's putting it nicely).?

But Harrenhal is on the way to Riverrun if you were travelling from KL or Dragonstone. If Lyanna had been at Harrenhal for whatever reason, and Rhaegar was travelling towards Riverrun to make Brandon's wedding, well the place of abduction lines up quite well.

And like I said. If Rhaegar was looking for Lyanna, Riverrun for Brandon's wedding is the place to look. The fact that everyone was in the Riverlands at the time of Brandon's wedding, is too big of a coincidence to ignore.

I think Rhaegar intended to travel North, specially after his son was born. Considering he started to have doubts about who it was the PtwP, he might have wanted to talk with Aemon face to face instead of communicating to each other via letters that took time to reach.

That of course, in a way, opposes my theory of Rhaegar actually going to Dorne to hide from Varys. Unless, one of the reasons to go to Starfall (ToJ is close to there) is that they're close to the sea and could take a ship to the North any time.

ETA: Yandel knows nothing.

I'd also add, that we don't know where Lyanna was until Rhaegar kidnapped her. But we know Brandon was in Riverrun, and Ned was in the Vale. We're not told where Benjen was, but during the Rebellion he was the Stark in Winterfell so either he was there all along, or he was out and about with his siblings. But we're told that it was Rickard and his men who descended from Winterfell to go to Riverrun. So I think all of the Stark children were out and about, and Lyanna was either in Riverrun with Brandon or in the Vale with Ned and Robert.

If she was in Riverrun, she possibly went to Harrenhal to gather Cat's mom's family who lived at Harrenhal, or she was descending from the Vale. Either seems possible for how she got to be 10 miles from Harrenhal.
