So I enjoy Texas Hold'em and Blackjack. Not just playing them but also discussing them with other players. So if you get a big win this year, or suffer a horrific defeat and wanna brag/vent about it, this is the place. Not just about these two game, but any others as well.

I'm headed to a casino for the first time in 2015 later today to play Hold'em and am hoping to start the year off with a win. Wish me luck!

Ok so I'm back from my first casino trip of the year and though I didn't win this time I only lost $185 so I guess it could have been way worse. Not going back again until the 17th, so hopefully I'll do better then. Sadly I got impatient and tried to make a hand work that I shouldn't have (flopped an open ended straight draw and played it like I already had the straight. Got taken down by two pair). On the plus side, the friend I went with left $190 up, so needless to say he paid for dinner (ribs) when we got back to the city.

You know the odds are against you, right?

Just kidding.

Lol. I know for most games they are (i.e. blackjack, let-it-ride, craps), but that is why I usually stick with Texas Hold'em. That way I am playing other people, and not the house. I also keep track of my wins/losses for the year, that way I make sure I don't lose too much (for 2014 I ended the year up $344 :cool4: )

You can bet on sports in lots of legal ways in the U.S.

I know loads of US people who bet on sports. I am confused.

Have I missed something? I'd like to be able to gamble legally online on sports. AFAIK that is still illegal here and heavily proscribed. Traveling to Vegas or some depressing, run-down casino is too much effort for frequent small bets on PL soccer and NFL.

From doing a bit of reading online and talking to said US friends it seems to be one of those things that is technically illegal but you will never ever get prosecuted for. Understandable if you still don't want to take the risk though. From what I see most of the laws refer to the actual bookmakers not the "gamblers", the actual act of sports betting doesn't seem to be illegal on a federal level. "No American has ever been arrested, indicted, or prosecuted by the feds for gambling online, because there's no law against it." (individual state law is different of course)

I hear New Jersey is legalizing sports betting but the only places where you can place bets I think are going to be at places like Monmouth Racetrack, William Hill I think is going to be handling that. There won't be any UK style betting shops as far as I know. The leagues aren't happy about but I don't know how much they can do to stop it.

I go to Harrington raceway and casino in Delaware every now and then. I enjoy blackjack and slots. Last time I went was November and lost $500. One of those trips where I couldn't get ahead, just kept falling behind. I reached my set limit and when I do I don't throw anymore money in after what I've lost. Maybe I'll go back in a couple months though.

Good on you that you quit when you reached your set limit. I've seen people that just can't quit and keep gambling away money that they can't afford to lose, no matter what I say to them (I never go to a casino with people like this more than once). It sucks that you lost. Not much you can do about slots, that is just pure luck depending on what the machine does, but it is always fun the machines actually pay off.

But what about blackjack? Did you follow the rules to ensure you had the best odds of winning? And what were the house rules? I've found I win the most at two deck games when the dealer has to hit on 16 but has to stay on 17. The worst is one deck when the dealer hits on soft 17. 6 deck games where the dealer hits on 16 but stands on 17 fall somewhere in the middle.

At any rate, better luck on your next trip!

  • 2 weeks later...

So just finished my second trip to the casino this year, and left $100 ahead. Still $85 down for the year, but I can't complain, a win's a win. Next trip isn't until mid February, and with any luck I'll be able to put myself back into the positives at that time.

You're doing way better than I am! Since Jan 1 I'm having a sizeable downswing in poker. Dropped a second buy in today when the guy who was beating me up for a while had AQ against my KQ on a 6J10 board. Guy hit his dream K on the turn, and then got the dream 9 on the river just to finish me off. So I left early instead of chasing. Next time I go to the casino it's for the Mohegan Sun Winefest and I don't think I can lose!

Dang, I hope you didn't lose too much on that hand. At least the guy didn't suck out on you. Same result, but it's always more irritating. Unless of course, you're the one sucking out. It's always awesome when you hit your 2 or 3 outer on the other guy.

House rules are dealer stands on 17 hard or soft. There are some side bet options available. I forget exactly what, like betting the dealer's face up card will be a "2" and things like that.

I follow the basic 21 strategy. The thing I hate most after the sealer getting 21 with 4 or 5 cards is when the dealer is showing a 7 or higher and I keep hitting and by 4 or 5 cards I've got 16. I always just grit my teeth and ask for another card and usually bust, but still better odds than standing in that position...unless I've been counting, which I don't really do, just try to generally keep track of how many aces, 10's and face cards have been dealt.

I used to gamble sports all the time on some sites, I never thought it was illegal. It was pretty convenient because they would just put money into my account the instant I won instead of having to meet some bookie to collect.

If you get five cards in blackjack isn't that a five card charlie?
