Crow's eye in the sky
You're right, he's been promoted by the Lannisters. So, he must build his own power while they still hold the IT. In the current situation, he's managed to be somewhat accepted by the lords of the Vale, but he has to offer something more if he wants to strenghten his stance. Nothing better that a war campaign where he can have the nominal command, even though he leaves the glory and the plunder to some others. Convenience is a good way to win fealty. His challenges are the Mountain Clans and the Freys. If he can succeed at this, he'll soon have the Vale and the Riverlands. I'm assuming that Freys and Boltons are heading to a sweeping defeat in Winterfell. Why the Freys? He can't pretend to be loyal to the Iron Throne if he attacks the Freys. Even though they are most likely to lose half their strength before the first quarter of Winds is done, they are well connected to the Lannister regime. Given that Cersei's appointed lord of the Rock is about the wed a Frey in Riverrun soon, I doubt that he would be reckless enough to take the Riverlands from the Lannister backed occupation of the Riverlands. Especially when the same regime made him lord of the Trident, and therefore the technical overlord to the Freys.
Crow's eye in the sky
I think he will lie low for a while in the next book, waiting for the best chance to switch sides, as mentioned before he knows the Lannisters/Tyrells are a sinking ship. Meanwhile in my opinion, Littlefinger will continue to attempt to use Sansa as a trump card, seeking to put his puppet in an increasing position of power ( marriage to Vale heir). I'm still not convinced the Lords of the Vale will go along with his machinations. A trump card for whom?
Not Benjen Stark
Littlefinger is my favorite character so I am biased. I just want to get that established. Littlefinger is too smart to declare war on the Lannisters until he can ensure the support of the north and riverlands (he has the vale already). Therefore while he gathers his strength the Lannisters and Tyrells will essentially self destruct in battle after the murder of Ser Kevan. Therefore a coalition behind Sansa Stark will be the only strong enough group to capture King's Landing, placing Littlefinger at the position of the next hand of the king. ~No One~
Interesting read so far. And a hugely interesting character.I think there are a few things we "know" (although one can never be too sure with GRRM). 1- Due to his birth, he can never be King. His best chance at power will be either as Hand, or, say, Regent. 2- His power is tied to/dependent on other people. Kind of ironic, I'd say. So whatever power he comes into will be via SR, Sansa, or another like Dany or fAegon. The other thing to take into account is GRRM and his style. Trope-subverter extraordinaire. Thus, we have to look at LF's "traditional" story arc and then "flip" it. Either he'll get all the power he's ever dreamed, then suck at ruling (though this has been done to death; Cersei, Dany, Roose, even Jon to a degree), or he'll be about to get everything he wants, and then die. Or be out-played. Or become a pawn. All this to say, either LF gets power for a very short time, or never gets any (more) at all. Dragon food.
