In response to @grumkin77 from the previous thread:

"She had begged Ned not to go, not now, not after what had happened; everything had changed now, couldn't he see that? It was no use. He had no choice, he had told her, and then he left, choosing" (GoT ch.14).

Does Catelyn mean that she begged Ned to turn down Robert's job offer and stay at Winterfell permanently, or does she mean that she simply asked him to delay his departure because of Bran's current condition?

I'm not sure whether she meant "permanently". I get the feeling she more meant "until Bran was well again" (or as well as he could get). But then again, I'm not a native speaker :) So I could be wrong on this..

I know the white walkers can't pass through the Wall because of the magic and spells used to make it, but is it ever said in the books if the Children of the Forest can pass through? I just wondered if they (like the Wildlings) were just on the wrong side when the Wall was built and if they can ever return south again.

It isn't mentioned as far as I recall. Although we do have this quote from Leaf:

“I was born in the time of the dragon, and for two hundred years I walked the world of men, to watch and listen and learn. I might be walking still, but my legs were sore and my heart was weary, so I turned my feet for home.”

I doubt that The Wall is warded against the CoTF. In fact, I think The Wall's warding was done by the CoTF. The warding at the cave where Bran and co. are seems similar, if not the same, as The Wall.

They can have trade cogs and ships, and some transporters for troops but they are not naval power like Braavos or Volantis

Which is a recipe for defeat in every war they fight. Their naval-orientated enemies could blockade the entire island, thus blocking them from trade or from landing their troops anywhere. If they already landed, if would block them from resupplying them. I'd hypothesize that New Ghis must have at least decent navy.

ETA: I just saw your new post that says they, indeed, have war galleys.

Then pretty much anyone could destroy their meager fleet and starve them out.

I guess they could have a sizable fleet but they just haven't used (most of) it against Dany, since Volantis and Qarth should have more than enough ships to deal with her?

After Vic shows up with the Iron Fleet everyone will blame New Ghis for Not commiting more ships, poor guys.
