[emoji14] Clash and SoS are my favourite parts of Song , so I'll begin with them ( also for 100% I will buy Winds in English, as I don't want to wait few months for realase of translated versions)
Lost Melnibonean
Since the historical overview in TWOIAF pretty much eliminates Valyrian steel from consideration as dragonsteel, is the most likely substance dragonbone?
aryagonnakill#2
Imo the historical overview did not eliminate VS from consideration as dragonsteel, we are told that the LN happened before the rise of Valyria, but we are also told that there were dragons all over the world, so there is no reason why Valyrian steal could not be the same as dragonsteel, dragonsteel simply being the original name because there was no Valyria to derive the name from. Why wouldn't dragon bone be called dragon bone? But what would you call steal forged in dragon fire?

Why wouldn't dragon bone be called dragon bone? But what would you call steal forged in dragon fire? The Long Night ocurred before the Andals arrived in Westeros. The First Men were defeated by the Andals since the former were still fighting with bronze weapons. So there was no steel in Westeros during the Long Night. Valyrians didn't learn the art of Valyrian steel until after they learned the art of steel from the Rhoynar. So, there was no Valyrian steel available to fight the Others in Westeros during the Long Night. I take it you're suggesting that dragonsteel was equivalent to Valyrian steel and invented by the Children of the Forrest independently?
aryagonnakill#2
Well I'm not necessarily saying that it was invented by the children of the forest but one of the things about melting steal is that you need to burn coal rather than wood, which is a slightly more advanced process, so having the heat of a dragon simplifies things a lot. You can melt tin and copper with wood, mix and make Bronze and the only difference in Bronze weapons is the ratio of copper to silver, China had the best in real life. The story of the forging of lightbringer refers to steal, you don't fold bronze you simply cast it, meaning you poor it into a mold and when it hardens your done/ still have to sharpen, obviously that doesn't jive with the technology of the first men, but there's so much contradiction going on I just feel like we can't say that dragonsteal isn't effectively the same as Valyrian steal. If it is different, I would seriously question why Martin included Valyrian steal in the books. I mean the base of the Hightower, the Wall, Storms End, Moat Cailin, and the Seastone chair all seem to be beyond the technological capabilities of the first men. Bluetiger
Do we know anything about minor Iron Islands? TWoIaF says that there are 31 Islands in the main archipelago and 13 near Lonely Light.Edit: Sorry for all mistakes in my posts. I have to use "computer" version of forum on my 4.3 mobile phone screen. Ran said that Tapatalk version won't be working for some time.
CreativeName
So, I'm looking for something. (Don't we all?) Maybe you can help me find it. Once there was this fantastic literary analysis of Theon's / Reek's ADWD material (i.e. Turncloak, Ghost in Winterfell etc.), delving into the depths of Theon's psychology, exploring themes, pointing out similarities between Martin's prose and classical horror fiction and so on and so forth. It was a very interesting read. It wasn't on westeros.org or any other usual fansite / forum, but somewhere on a private blog or website. IIRC, there were numerous parts / pages of it. It had a strange title that I can't remember for the life of me... Does any of these (admittedly) vage descriptions ring a bell? Please let me know. ETA: Every now and then someone in the forum would recommend / link to it. So I'm hoping that at least one of those old troupers gets what I'm referring to. Kissed by Ice and Fire
This one: .Howland was able to distract Arthur with a trick of his crannogman trade. Thrown a frog at him, cast a fishing net over him and pulled, thrown a poison dart in his face, anything on that line.

Not that I can recall, but I really need to reread the Iron Island chapter from the World Book, so perhaps there's something there.. I've checked, there is nothing more about them. We don't know if they are inhabited and how big they are ( maybe just few rocks stretching out of the sea)
