Aspect Emperor's UK release has been confirmed as May 2008. My guess is that that the US and Canada may get it 4-5 months earlier, perhaps right at the end of 2007. Scott said a while back he was going to go from a 12-month schedule to an 18-month one. The 12-month schedule was too nuts.

By Orbit?

Scott said a while back he was going to go from a 12-month schedule to an 18-month one

I know, and he said in the same sentence that because of that he would expect it to be released sometime in the late spring or summer of 2007. This was 5 months back however, just before he went offline. It's possible that he's suffered a delay of course, but hopefully not.

Edit: Here's the quote:

"The contract with Orbit UK has already been agreed upon, and the contracts with Penguin and Overlook will probably be wrapped up soon. The delivery date I'm giving is January 07, which should put the pub date somewhere late spring, early summer"

"I've been working on AE all this time, mostly hammering out scenes and details. Note that the dates I gave correspond exactly with the 18 month schedule. In my original Penguin contract, the time from inception to publication was a year"

There seem to be no firm plans for a Neuropath release however.

Edit: See Firgoret's answer below.

I was wondering when Richard Morgan is going to come up with that Fantasy series he's been talking about, because I see he has another SF novel ( Black Man) coming out this month. Any word on that? Seems like he could provide an interesting take.

Ilario: The Lion's eye by Mary Gentle and Blindsight by Peter Watts are two titles I forgot to mention above.

I should also mention that I'm really looking forward to John Julius Norwich's upcoming history book, The Middle Sea: History of the Mediterranean due in October.

Is there any word on when Axis will be released? It seems to be sometime in 2007. What I could find from Wilson Axis is:

"As difficult as it was to beat into shape, I think it’s a good book. Without going into too much detail, it looks beyond the Arch that was put in place by the alien “Hypotheticals” in Spin — linking Earth (by sea!) to a new and resource-rich world, for inscrutable purposes. We learn a little more about a universe a few billion years older — and more complex — than the one we currently inhabit."

I've also been considering buying The Gollancz Encyclopedia of SF Technology due this month from Peter Hamilton and George Mann.

I have way too many unread books to be able to think about interesting, unpublished things without feeling a bit guilty, but here are a few things:

  • A Dance with Dragons obviously.
  • Soldier of Sidon by Gene Wolfe (Even though I have still to read Soldier of Arete. And I don't think it's been released yet; Amazon says October 17.)
  • Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe.
  • Axis by Robert Charles Wilson (I didn't love Spin, but Axis actually sounds more interesting).
  • Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay. (It'll be interesting to see him go off in a new direction and write something that isn't a thinly disguised fantasy version of a historical country.)
  • Endless Things by John Crowley. (OK, perhaps not. I haven't read anything in the Aegypt sequence yet, but if this one gets good reviews then I'm definitely going to pick up the series.)

4. Reaper's Gale - Steven Erikson

5. A Sword from Red Ice - J.V. Jones

6. Un Lun Dun - China Mieville

7. Volume Two of the Deepgate Codex (I don't know what it's called yet) - Alan Campbell

8. Caine Black Knife - Matthew Stover

9. The Aspect Emperor - R Scott Bakker

10. The Born Queen - Greg Keyes

So it's pretty similar to everyone else's.

By Orbit?

Confirmed by Bakker's UK publisher on the SFX Forum (thread has since been deleted though).

Also waiting for A Sword from Red Ice by JV Jones, but not too fussed about it since there's another book after that as well.

Both books are by Orbit and apparently Orbit's schedule is so full now that when a book is delivered, it has to wait a fair old while before they can assign it a release slot. They are dealing with the problem. The only author they're going to extreme lengths to release as soon as their new book is ready is Robert Jordan.

Firgoret

Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe

Is that his next project?

Yes; though I'm unsure if there will be a new short story collection published before it. I really don't know very much about it, more than that it was mentioned about a year on the Wolfe mailing list that it existed "in penultimate draft". It's supposed to be a historical fantasy novel, presumably about pirates, but nothing else is known of it.
