Football XXXVI: Race for the top four

Okay, City are probably safe in the top four due to Spurs' and Liverpools' recent struggles, but bloody hell, what's going on? Wasn't that long ago they were exactly equal with Chelsea. And Liverpool do have a relatively easier run-in. They're really gonna need to beat us.

We have a tough run in and probably have the greater need for securing at least a draw at the weekend. Given our upcoming fixtures, we might need every bit of that 8 point lead over Liverpool. On the other hand, if we can string together a run of victories, second place (or more) is not out of the question. Looking at the fixture list, the title race is not done and dusted just yet.

Given that we're now in really good form and have done fine against the big teams even when we weren't, I'd be amazed if we got ourselves into a position where Liverpool can catch us from here.

I don't think we'll catch Chelsea, they're just too good at limping to wins, but second is what we should definitely be aiming for. Especially if we beat City.

I'm curious if Chelsea continues to limp wins with Diego Costa out.

Probably. Spawny bastards that they are.

Saw an interesting stat this morning. Costa has played 10 more PL games than Giroud, but has only scored 3 more than him. The idea that Costa is the best striker in the league is something of a fallacy. All Costa does, apart from score goals, is start fights. So meh. His overall game is nowhere near as good as Giroud or Rooney.

Maybe it'll hurt them, but although he's had a couple of goals and assists the last couple of weeks he's been pretty pants for a while now, and the enforced playing of Remy might actually make them better.

Yeah. I thought before the season that he'd underwhelm. Then he had the blisteringly good start (where he genuinely was really good all-round), and I thought I'd got it wrong. But it turns out my initial instinct was right. He's mostly good for running around a lot and causing aggro.

Exactly the same happened with Pelle. Go me.

Giroud has the best goals per minute in the league at the moment and has for a bit. He's been one of the top 2 strikers in the PL since start of 2015. Whether he can keep up that form remains to be seen.

The idea that Costa is one of the best three strikers in the league is a fallacy. Can probably extend that further.

The best three strikers are, in no particular order: Giroud, Rooney, Aguero.

Nah, it's still Cisse. And Remy's is better too, albeit with drastically limited gametime.

He's definitely top 3 imo, lethal finisher.

I'd put the three Spocky named higher plus, if he does continue his form long-term (and after all this is only Costa's second season as a real scorer), Harry Kane. Possibly also Sakho and Bony, though I'd like to see how Bony settles in at City and how Sakho does in the longer run, since he's had quiet times and came from nowhere, before I call that. All of them with the possible exception of Sakho have much stronger all-round games, and Sakho seems to be a smarter runner and is obviously faster.

I also rate Lukaku more, but he's obviously had a pants season.

All those names and no Sturridge? :P

I think Chelaea will be fine without Costa though, Remy is damn good and seems to perform well in his appearances so far this season, weird how Cuadrado has been worse than Schurrle and even Salah was for them though
