The end of an Era, New Clothes for Arya

Actually it did have to do with the smell. It is true that they moved around to conduct the crown's business, such as to adjudicate, but they frequently moved on fairly quickly because of the large number of people and animals and their resulting smells. It was also a great way for the King or Queen to push the cost of the court off onto the nobles. Henry the VII and his granddaughter Queen Elizabeth I were famous for it. Both of them were known to pinch a penny. My point was that in all likelihood they would have had other residences even in King's Landing and the surrounding area just as London does.

And also, before double entry bookkeeping, you had to be very hands-on to keep people from stealing from you.

Henry the VIII moved on average a little over 30 times a year. They packed everything up and took it with them every 10 days or so. They did not have furniture as we have furniture. Oddly enough the main possession that was furniture was their bed and they had quite a few of those. Up until the 1400s the king lived in the great hall with his court and privacy as we know it did not exist. Around 1400 things changed, and they began to create state rooms in which to meet their court in with additional private rooms for the king and queen. But even with increased privacy, it was difficult to have a strictly private life. in the 1500s, Henry had 7 greater houses, which had great halls in it. He inherited 17 smaller houses. He also inherited 14 medievals castles, some of which were falling into ruin even by then. Henry very rarely used those castles, he preferred the comfort of his modern houses.
