[Book Spoilers] EP506 Discussion v. 2

Recommended Posts

Why not take a bit more time in S4 before Lysa's death, setting up someone to take the fall? Then have that guys trial and the lord's declarant in S5? You could sideline her for most of the season, just give her 4 or 5 episodes.

Time is short. Only 2 seasons after this one. Seriously, after 5 years of compression you're still complaining about it?

So you think Sansa getting raped is an improvement on her arc in the books?

Next phase version 1: She spends a small amount of time in depression and then finds some strength out of nowhere and instigates vengeance on the Boltons.

Next phase version 2: She becomes the Jeyne Poole of the books. Broken, demoralised, in constant fear and incapable of human intimacy. She needs saving from this 'Winterhell' and Theon finds himself and whisks her away when Stannis' forces arrive.

Version 1 is not in keeping with the way GRRM tries to deal realistically with horrific events. One reason for the wide appeal of ASOIAF/GOT outside of the usual fantasy crowd is this attempt to deal realistically with its situations and treat them seriously. This version is more in line with Exploitation Movie writing, which is geared towards shock value and extremism. This is what I believe they will go for. What has happened to Sansa will not be dealt with realistically.

Version 2 has destroyed Sansa's character development and leaves the writers, if they want to treat the subject matter seriously and deal realistically with the consequences of what happens, with a huge amount of work to do in establishing Sansa getting over what has happened to her. Jeyne Poole will never get over what has happened to her and the books will reflect this. I suspect D&D will not deal realistically with what has happened to Sansa and if they do then it beggars belief that anyone would want this to be her story line.

Both versions are bad choices for the story and bad choices for Sansa's character arc/development.

And this is to say nothing of the ridiculous contrivances they concocted to get Sansa in this position.

All of this. Nicely stated. They've destroyed this character and her story.

They had to get that character out of the Vale and away from LF. They just don't have the luxury of taking 6 huge novels worth of time to do it. Sansa's arc, as it is written in the books, is just unfilmable. All sitting around and internal monologue. Fine in a novel, boring on film.

That's not a defence for the choices D&D have made.

They waste so much time on pointless stuff that that's no excuse.

Time is short and they're wasting it on fanfiction so that Sophie Turner gets more screen time (not even getting into WHAT THEY DID WITH HER of course). Protar's suggestion would actually have given them more time to tell the actual fucking story. Edited by Facebookless Man

They don't need to defend their choices. Sansa's book story is just too slow and internalised for tv or film. Ok, you don't like the alternate D & D have come up with but I still maintain they were right to accelerate/change her arc. Book Sansa just doesn't do anything.

No one thinks Jeyne is Arya in the books, anymore than people believed Warbeck was Edward IV's son.

I don't think that's right. In fact, it's stated a number of times that many of the Northern Lords believe her to be Arya.

Children cannot consent. And unless you want to get banned, you'll look up the forum policy on denying rape.

The showrunners aged Tommen up to the medieval age of consent precisely so they could have him and Margaery sleep together. It didn't do Tommen's character any favours, frankly, but the showrunners just wanted more sex.

In your opinion.

Well look. For me an ideal S5 would have had the following stories:

  • Winterfell (8/9 episodes)

Meereen (8/9 episodes)

Dorne (8/9 episodes)

Kings Landing (7 episodes)

The Wall (7 episodes)

Tyrion/Aegon (7 episodes)

Braavos (5/6 episodes)

The Vale (4 episodes)

That's less storylines than there were in S3 (which had the most IIRC), so why is that not manageable?

Oh well then. Let's have Sansa wake a stone dragon from the depths of Winterfell's crypts and ride it across the north killing all Bolton sympathisers.

No? That's okay. I don't have to defend my choice.

There were plenty of people Sansa could talk to in her storyline. Sweetrobin (who is older), Mya, Myranda (add her to Sansa's story, not Ramsay's), Lothor Brune (already introduced). That's only one added character. There are already Vale lords.

Her story was full of the game of thrones and the history and lore of Westeros, not to mention learning the weaknesses of one of the political masterminds, an up close look at how he plays the game, and how to take him down.

Also full of character development for a main character who is also a Stark, Sansa, who has received very little character development on the show, and is currently playing another character altogether.

What is happening in Winterfell in those 8/9 episodes without Sansa? You wanted the Jeyne Poole subplot included?

This, too. Even if we set aside the soul destroying trauma of this marriage (which her family would never want for her), and the complete stupidity of it, since she's already a Stark, and the whole reason Robb wrote the will was because he didn't want this to happen... She provides the family killers with an heir so they can kill her, too! That will teach them! Robb and Alys both said that's what happens, they get the heir, they kill the mother:

Not to mention the conversation between Jaime and Edmure

"She is carrying my child."

No, thought Jaime that's your death she has growing in her belly.

Genna Lannister too says Edmure needs to go and that Roslin's child will be fine if it is a girl as they can marry her to their heir ensuring legitimacy for House Frey.

This is just the sort of bog standard book reader complaining we've had to put up with for 5 seasons now.

Well, tbh D&D fucked up with Theon torture anyway. They should've left him out of the show to focus on him with the aftermath this season.. And yeah, Jeyne subplot, Manderly and the freypies, Abel and the Washerwomen, the murders, the ghost, Lady Dustin and the crypts... I mean, this is good material. Probably the best material of aDwD.

What happens in the books. They had plenty of time to introduce Jeyne in S3 when Theon was stuck in the Dreadfort with no plot. They had northern lords plotting, murder mystery, frey pies, Mance/Abel. And Theon's development. And then the Battle of Ice to cap off the season. There's plenty they could have done.
