Could Sam going south also have the added issue of trying to recruit Randyll Tarly due to Heartsbane? Could that be a reason for Sam going south as well as the Citadel? I was thinking Sam's extended family are a bit thin on the ground as far as plot is concerned (although they could have a lot to do in TWOW), so the fact that there is valyrian steel in the equation makes sense.
