Grail King
Wife wants Stannis dead, but after Sansa is free, and she wants Davos to do it ( I reminded her of Brienne ), and when the time comes she wants Drogon to take care of the Red Witch. Liaraeyne
I watched the episode with my bf. He hasnt read any of the books. I have. This was his reaction. He thought the Daenerys/drogon scene was "spectacular". Quite something coming from him, he rarely gives compliments and such and he is a quiet observer by nature. He didn't react on the Arya scene in any way whatsoever (I sat on his lap the entire episode). The Shireen scene shocked him. I could tell it shocked him even though he didnt say a word, like I said, I sat on his lap so I could feel his body really well. He tensed. I like to talk about things that shock or upset me, so immediately after the episode I commented on it. I said that this hasnt happened in the books (yet). He didnt really reply except "oh". I could tell he was shocked and that he didnt want to comment. He seemed to try to forget the whole scene. Im starting to think that he liked Shireen. Quite surprising. He is a very mature and confident person and he usually has no trouble at all with shocking things. He could look at really bad things and talk about it calmly.Wonder whether he'll watch the next episode with me :p
Mish Windage
Son and Boss Son watched with me on my second watching. When "the scene" came up, I said "I gotta take a leak" and walked off and waited till the screams stopped before coming back. Came in and son was bug eyed and grinning. Grinning!??? Who is this kid!? What kind of parent raises a kid to flipping GRIN after watching... oh my... Then he said "So that's why you had to take a leak." so he was really laughing at ME, and I think that took the edge off the scene for him. He seems to really enjoy the Arya scenes. During the pit he made a few references like when Jorah was on the ground he said all calmly "you can stab him now. stab him? You could kill him there..." and they're showing all the other characters, closeup of Dany, he was still going, calmly "could be stabbing him. stabbing hhiimmmm... Now? no? Now? no? NOW! no?" At credits, he said "Poor Shireen." Work monday, boss comes in. Basically thinks Stannis made the right decision. Anything I said even remotely doubting Stannis was quickly rebuffed. HUGE Stannis apologist. The man can apparently do no wrong! Made me laugh. He just wants to see Messandi naked again and was disappointed we didn't get another Tyene scene of her... "beauty". But Stannis did the right thing. Both think Dany turned around on Drogon and came back to do battle. Both are itching for Trant to bite it. Son thinks Mace is a goner, Boss doesn't think so. Boss thinks Stannis is going to sit the Iron Throne. Son thinks Dany's going to burn Kings Landing to the ground (previously thought she was going to sit the throne) expectationsBoss is interested in what happened to Cersei and wonders about Varys. He thinks Varys is a good guy, expects him to show up in Meereen next episode. Wants more Messandi (for only one reason).Son forgot about Varys. Just wants to see Arya and Other storylines. IKE-STL
My sister and brother in law haven't read the books, but they really enjoyed seasons 1-4, even rewatching all 4 before this season began. This season hasn't been going as well, sadly. After each episode they want to know how that episode deviated from the books, and as more events occur that they seem displeased or confused with, the more and more they ask this question, multiple times mid-episode even. Last week they wanted to turn the television off after the Shireen scene. It's probably a good thing there's only 1 episode left, if it weren't the finale they'd probably want to just stop and find a new show. SerGuppy
Work monday, boss comes in. Basically thinks Stannis made the right decision. Haha. If your company ever goes into the red, and your boss mumbles about sacrifices having to be made, be very wary around him. I watched the show around a couple of Chinese friends. They were, umn, more pragmatic about the Shireen scene. They thought it was a very logical choice.
Xie
My unsulled also thought Shireen would die before the series' end based on scenes in prior seasons, and in this season, the very moment Melisandre suggested it, my unsullied said "Stannis will end up doing it". There was so much blatant foreshadowing all along that Shireen was not really loved by her mother, and that both Selyse and Shireen were simply pawns for Melisandre, and that Stannis prizes his ambition far above anything else. Show made this clear to the Unsullied right from these characters' introductions.
Mistress of Lemon Cakes
Aside from the unsullied boyfriend who doesn't really give me much in the way of reactions, I am down to one unsullied coworker who binge watched seasons 1-4 to catch up with this season a few weeks ago and was generally full on raving about it by the time he caught up (right before episode 6 of this season). Since then it's been mostly down hill. I have myself partly to blame for this because I raved about how amazing this episode was going to be because of a huge "Hardhome-ish moment" that would happen for another character this episode. He was genuinely confused when he saw me this morning and was like "What exactly was it you were looking forward to?" I was fully expecting him to rage over Shireen, but it turned out it was Dany riding Drogon that was completely underwhelming for him. And Dany is his favorite character along with Arya. The harpies attacking one by one and probably the silly Neverending Story feeling to the end of the scene completely put him off. He asked me why it had been my favorite scene in the books and I explained all the changes that were made to the scene (no harpies attacking, Dany vaulting into the pit on her own, Drogon turning on her and snapping, Dany picking up the whip and forcing him to submit to her.) After I told him that he was completely shocked that the scene was changed and said it would have been way more satisfying had they gone with Daenaerys using the whip to make him submit. He is pretty detailed and critical viewer. This whole season has been the season of "Why did they do this?" He found the whole thing with Littlefinger and Sansa selling her to the Boltons to be completely contrived. He does not care about Dorne at all (but when I explained how Arianne Martell was missing he was again like "okay, that would have been really cool to include" -- especially the whole trying to crown Myrcella part). He only asked me about why I was so upset by the Shireen scene later and explained how it was physically impossible for Stannis to burn her at the present moment, and the sorry state of affairs Stanis is in in the books (starving for weeks, his army resorting to cannibalism, him refusing to burn "non believers" and telling the zealots in his army to "pray harder") and received more or less the same thing of "Yeah that would have made more sense, especially since Shireen is his only heir." So some unsullied are clearly being turned off by the illogical plot turns this season. Then again, my unsullied boyfriend does not seem to have taken too much of an offense to anything other than the fact that he is completely uninterested in about 50% of the plot points (Dorne and Bravos especially, and Arya used to be one of his favorite characters too.) Count Balerion
I think I posted this in the wrong forum earlier; but one Unsullied friend commented:"One question:WTF??"(Big black letters in the original.)She later added that she would give up on the show if it weren't for Tyrion. Earlier, she had said that she actually liked this season better than previous seasons.Another Unsullied friend hated the burning scene, but had read that it's also in the books. So I explained that it's not in the corresponding parts of DWD, and that the circumstances would probably be completely different in WOW; and I mentioned the theory that she gets burnt in order to repel the Others. She seems to accept that explanation.
Donaldys I Trumpagar
Hello y'all. Usually there is a thread like this every episode but not this one, so I thought I would make my own.First thread I've actually made. Anyways I am doomed to watch this show alone from now on. I've tried to introduce quite a few unsullied to the show and books. Unfortunately I just lost my last unsullied fellow viewer. My friends and family have not read the books but I've convinced some to watch the show with me. Unfortunately I lost my last unsullied due to this last episode. The burning of Shireen caused her walk out in disgust and swear off the show which is a bummer. The main complaint from my unsullied has been that the show is just so depressing and violent/pornographic. and that they have better things to do then to watch little girls be raped and burned alive and families get torn apart. The last viewer lasted till now becuase she was rooting for Daenarys but she thinks her plotline has grown to boring and thinks she'll probably be brutally raped and murdered soon with how the show is going.(Where was a "little girl" raped???)My unsullied wife said, "figured he'd do that" when Stannis burned Shireen. Dragon of Ice and Fire
New to the forums, so hello! I watch the series usually with my parents when it first comes out. They usually don't talk in episodes, but if they do, it's pretty much always my mom. The tents catching fire in the beginning: Mom thinks Mel set the fires or had something to do with them. At the Wall: Mom was surprised Thorne let Jon and the others through the gates. Dorne: Both laughed at Bronn getting punched in the face as punishment. In fact Bronn usually makes us laugh (even when he's in pain, apparently). Not sure what they think of the whole storyline, though. Braavos: They think Jaqen knew Arya would see a man from her list when she went to see the thin man, and wonder if he wanted her to see Trant as a sort of test, to see what she would do. Poison Trant and still show she's Arya, or poison the thin man like ordered to? Stannis's camp: Mom asked if the Shireen thing happened in the books. I said it didn't, at least not yet. "Hmm." Was her response. Later on her and my grandma talked about how terrible that scene was, not because the scene was bad writing but because it just was a terrible thing to see. Those screams were horrifying. Dany: Everyone's glad she's finally getting herself set straight and going back to her dragons (Drogon). Everyone seems to enjoy Tyrion and Dany's scenes together. My mom called it when they were in the middle of the pit and were surrounded. She said "Her dragons have to appear!" I tried to mislead her by saying Dany chained them up, but she pointed out that Drogon was free. XD
Anythingatall
My Unsullied work friend cared little about Shireen, she basically just shrugged. She was far more interested in Dany, she thought Dany flying off was awesome and said she had to fly away to save him.
Ramsay B.
I meant it's not good storytelling.Of course I saw it coming, you had to be a moron not to. Foreshadowing is not characterization though. You keep missing that point. Is that fucking Olly kid well written just because it's painfully obvious what happens next? Will FTW be brilliant storytelling if it becomes Olly doing it solo "for the potatoes" next week?Arguing is a waste of time, logic is lost on that one.My unsullied co-workers and friends were a mixture of confused and just disgusted with Stannis. GravyFace
Like I've said before, I usually watch with a good-sized group so I love seeing people's reactions. This time there were about 9 of us.Dorne: no reaction at all from people. Only a few chuckles when Bronn got punched. Bravos: mostly they seemed bored during Aryas story this season, and this episode was no exception. Only a few comments about the creepy brothel scene. They don't remember who Meryn Trant is though. The Wall: a few comments that Jon should've shouted about what happened lol. Or been a bit more excited anyway. They want to know how much food the giant is going to eat.Stannis: I've also said before that no one really had an opinion about Stannis one way or another. A few of them couldn't even differentiate between Roose and Stannis until this season lol. But yeah the sacrifice officially has them all hating Stannis. They were completely disgusted. A couple are predicting Brienne kills him.The Pit: most are big Dany and Tyrion fans so seeing them together still had them excited. A few got scared when the attack started, and a couple predicted a dragon helping. Lots of cheers when Dragon landed and Dany mounted him. And lots of questions on where she's headed. Philpenn
Also have an unsullied friend who finds Arya to be the most boring story. Can't understand it, even knowing he hasn't read the books. Character we've all come to like, alone in a strange place, on the verge of gaining quasi super powers. What's not to like?
Follmann
(Where was a "little girl" raped???) Well, there was the Meryn Trant scene.
Kobayashi Maru
I comment with one little group of unsullied and reactions are pretty much this: This season is not as nearly good as previous ones. It was not this boring since season 2. Why did we have to wathc Dorn? Nothing happened and it was sooo bad. I still don't get LF's plan with Sansa, why did he do that? Where did the faith militant come from? They just appear today and they can apparently overpower castle guards, aren't they supposed to be like ordinary people? Stannis is the worst person in the world,he should burn in hell with his red woman...Me: He's not even with them in the books. Unsullied friends : WTF then why? Did Dani just leave all her friends in the arena? This season sucks.... Me : <sigh>
Night'sQueen
I talked to my mom. She was horrified by Stannis sacrificing Shireen. I assured her Stannis the books is nowhere near sacrificing his daughter. He might sometime in the future, but it will be more dramatic than some stupid ninja attack. I kinda had to. I convinced her to name her dog Stannis. She was like "WTF? Why did Dany leave her friends?"You convinced your mom to name her dog Stannis? That made me laugh out loud! Hilarious. How much convincing did it take? And what kind of dog??
