I'm sorry, but they really blew the Drogon scene (book spoilers)

Recommended Posts

It was certainly entertaining and IMO, could never live up to the book. But making Dany a victim and basically "kissing her own ass goodbye," did not sit well with me. She fought back in this moment and I wish, I could have seen it or something similar. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

They really should have shown a shot of the Sons retreating after the dragon burned a sufficient number of them. Or more Unsullied arriving in the arena. Anything to explain why the Sons suddenly stopped attacking. The whole time she was mounting Drogon I was thinking 'aren't the sons still there? Why did they stop and give her time to get on him?'

Exactly! I couldn't believe how few Unsullied were in the arena.

Also, in the preview of next week's episode, we saw that the entourage survived. So we have to believe that once Daenerys flew away on Drogon, the Sons of the Harpy lost interest and let everyone else wander off back to the pyramid?

I will quote myself :

Was wondering about the Harpys who were left.

I notice in the last long shot, a helicopter shot, there is only a small group of figures left , if you subtract the four team Dany plus(I am counting Unsullied too, yes there are some left) , there are maybe 5 or 6 (or less) Harpys directly in the take off path, in the ground shot they are all doing the run-away-run-away thing. Seems no SoH were left in the arena after she exited.

Would have been nice in the another long shot we see that the Harpys have run away, but they are doing that in that ground medium shot.

I find the whole daznaks pit scene horrible and unnatural. The writing is so forced. First they make the harpies mere murderers, killing everyone they see (even Hizdahr!). They also make The Unsullied bad fighters and low in numbers. These two things force Danny to be in danger so Drogon can come and save her at the right time. Basically, in order to make this "cool" scene with Drogon they:

- Butcher Sons of the Harpy characterization.

- Make Dannys marriage useless and in consequence Hizdahrs character useless.

- Make The Unsullied completely different from season 3.

- Scenes with the dragons showing their animalistic behavior make no sense now. Drogon should go to the pit cause of the noise and the smell of blood, not to save Danny and kill the "bad guys".

Other than that, the cgi was fine. Im not too picky with those kind of scenes.

This was my biggest peeve with the scene too. Dany casualy saunters over to her dragon while there is a crowd of at least 30 men standing near her who want to kill her. In fact, they are still hurling spears at Drogon. Did none of them think "Hey, let's hurl our spears at our main target, who is now slowly walking in the open and completely vulnerable"?

How about: "There is a magical fire breathing monster ten feet away from me, which just burned half a dozen of my friends alive, the blond bitch is walking towards it as if it's a cute kitten and I'm shitting my pants"

I understand the deal about Dany deserting her entourage since, unlike the books, it doesn't look like she can control Drogon. But I read the OP and I wonder what show is he talking about.

Lol... what I am so done with is this youtube review after about 3 minutes. Gads it is like sportscenter for GOT. Who is gonna watch this dreck for 45 minutes. Sum it up much quicker.

These guys are cowards anyway. If I hung in there they might have eventually had a discussion that Fans might want to listen. They just have to watse time prefacing conversation with phony concern over controversial issues

I only wanted to point out that Unsullied people (who can be verified) have the same issues book snobs do. No need to be derisive.

Each of these points took me out of the scene completely and left me shaking my head and rolling my eyes.

Why is the Queen there with about 5 guards among sixty-thousand potential assassins?

So the Sons of the Harpy are ninjas and the Unsullied are the worst fighters in the world?

Why are the Sons of the Harpy even here? Didn't she marry a slave-owner and re-open the pits? Wasn't that the whole thing?

Why is Drogon Ex Machina arriving all of a sudden?

Groan.

Groan.

That's the way it happens in the book too, not clear if the commotion or what GRRM never really explains, but it's a nit since apparently Drogon was nearby in both cases.

You know in the Inside the Episode for 9 the bring up that Dany and Drogon seem to have a 'psychic' connection, one could read her closing her eyes , not a resignation, but a sort-of-warging , I know it's not explicit. Benioff describes in strangely first saying she is resigned and then saying there is a 'special connection'.

That is not what they say. You are making the connection to Dany as some sort of warging. They explicitly say she is resigned to her fate when she closes her eyes. Later he says when describing Drogan's timely appearance as possibly a special connection in knowing that his mother was in danger. no summoning. Obviously, the dragon would have had to start his return way before that last moment unless he could teleport.

Perhaps there is opening in future for better sort of telepathy

I don't get the complaining over the Unsullied being bad fighters, you can be the most badass warrior ever, if you get surrounded by 30 guys with knives and swords out to kill you, your ass is going down. Unless your Batman from the Arkham games, those 30 less trained fighters will maul you and your little group to death quickly and brutally.

Look at what happened during the riots portion in Kings Landing season 2, a whole party of soldiers escorted Joffrey, Tyrion and Cersei back to the Keep and when the unarmed civilians ganged up on them they barely got out of there alive.

i personally thought it was very odd during that one part where the fighting had broken out and everyone was surrounding Dany on the podium BUT HER ENTIRE BACK WAS STILL OPEN!?!?!

Nope. Go re-watch it. They have some Unsullied around them as well, including behind Dany. They're just moving around a lot and your eye gets drawn naturally to the harpies since they're much shinier.

edit: because I'm a spaz typer.

I think they might have struggled with showing Drogon flying, which is probably why they didn't have him attacking from the air. I wonder if it's not doable...they also seem to struggle with his physical form in general; he seemed ungainly and clumsy. I was also okay with the CGI, I understand they can't do everything I've imagined.

But I thought the scene in general could have been done better.

Think back to how stupid Legolas looked surfing down an Oliphant trunk.... Dany riding Drogon was better.

:agree:

I love all the armchair quarterbacks who know just how all humans would react to having a very pissed off, out of control, fire-breathing DRAGON land inches away from where you're standing. Especially when most people were born a hundred years after the last cat-sized one died. To my knowledge, there's no one living who witnessed the large ones alive.

Problems with the scene.

1. Daenerys is virtually unprotected at a public event with tens of thousands of potential assassins. She had Unsullied on the dias and surrounding her in the Pit. Would you prefer the Popemobile? She's properly protected for that place and time. We'll likely never find out who is the head of the Harpies. :frown5:

2. Jorah McGreyscale touches Daenerys. Jorah has the ASOIAF version of poison ivy that can kill, and is incurable. Just like most skin disorders, it's not airborne. You have to touch the actual infected place to spread it. Jorah has it very concealed, thus safe.

3. SotH surround Daenerys and then do some kind of shuffle dance for 10 minutes. Yes, because they were fighting Unsullied, Jorah, Grey Worm, and Daario.

4. A massive dragon decends from the sky breathing fire and the SotH wait for it to land in order to engage it in combat rather than flee liek human beings do and plan for another day. Because they're so used to seeing fire-breathing dragons land mere inches from them, they shouldn't even notice them anymore, right?

5. Daenerys' escape gives us the worst FX of the entire series thus far. Yet still some of the best ever seen on TV. I'm just torn about not hearing the Wilhelm Scream since Blackwater.

Honestly, if one person managed to hold onto their bowels, after a dragon landed next to them, I'd be shocked.
