Sidequestion that tormented me for a long time now,

how did Weiss get that job? Why was he allowed to do this?

They say this series is the hardest thing to make into television and it is a huge and important modern book series.

So why did he get green light? He never did anything before that. Never directed something, nor produced anything and most importantly, never wrote anything for anything. No book. No short story. No screenplay.

Bennioff did. Kinda mediocre, but Troy was a success and good film in its own, without regard to historical inaccuracies. Stay is not bad either.

But Weiss did nothing before.

Who would trust in someone with no references? Especially such a huge and difficult project?

Benioff's work is decent After the show came out I ready City of Thieves which was actually better than I expected. I guess Weiss wrote a couple novels but I've never heard of them. I guess he came along in the package with Benioff.

Maybe they also should generally cut writers and just have 2 or 3 that each focus on one character and then combine it, instead of that ridiculous "everyone writes everyone" crap. That cannot work.

And when there are so many writers, inconsistencies are easily there, and it must also be horrible to phone around all the time, asking if the line you wrote wont contradict what the other guy just wrote.

Pope reference was brilliant.

I guess David said, I wanna do it! I wanna do it! Oh, and I'm bringing my bro too.

Maybe he is the one with the extensive knowledge of porn and the library of address books with the actresses phone numbers.. :dunno:

I feel like the writers literally sat down and decided to have a competition to see how many cliffhangers they could fit into one episode.

I mean, I enjoyed it, but at the same time I was profoundly irritated. Pretty much nothing was given a shred of resolution. At least in previous seasons we had a least a few things tied up or close to (backwater, red wedding); this episode just threw crazy stuff at us and was just like "lol fuck you wait a year now shitstains". So meh.

Honestly I feel like D&B are rather weak writers on their own and that the more they write their own storylines the worse the show becomes. This show has always been at its best when it was follow Martin's work.

Do you realize that AFFC and ADWD's last chapters are FULL of cliffhangers too, right?

But at the right moment.

And satisfying.

Interesting, thought provoking.

Open to make guesses.

Hopeful.

I am not joking. They are good cliffhangers. Cut at the exact right moment.

I mean obviously I would cut the writers a lot of slack if that were the case. But what Metopheles said has merit too. There are different types of cliffhangers and I felt like these weren't good ones. Finding out what happens to Tyrion and varys after the death of Tywin is a cliffhanger, but there is resolution in that Tyrion does kill Tywin. The journey ahead is open for a lot of discussion. Versus, say, just cutting away the moment a sword falls, or two characters jumping off a wall. Meh.

Don't get me wrong, it's still fun speculation and I still enjoyed the episode. I just wish there was at least a little tying of threads, instead of just leaving us with a fistful of crazy stories all going in crazy directions with no clue what's going to anyone.

Do you really believe that Tyrion not meeting Daenerys in ADWD is a good cliffhanger? Or not showing the two battles that should have been the logical conclusion of the story arc is a good cliffhanger? Really? To me, AFFC/ADWD feels like a unfinished book. Pretty good, yes, but unfinished and frustrating.

Regardless, AFFC and ADWD make sense. The show is cutting too much, but most importantly, it is cutting away logic. Melisandre burned Shireen just to melt the snow away? I was expecting a shadow dragon or something. WTF. How could she be so oblivious. These characters are flawed, but not dumb.

I mean...I feel like you could argue that Mel figured that Shireen's sacrifice would help turn the battle itself in some way, not just melt snow. Either way I feel like really didn't do Stannis justice in terms of his military ability. He literally just...walked up in a loose gaggle of troops up to Winterfell. Doesn't seem like something a seasoned military veteran would do.

Two stars for Lena Headey's performance alone this episode. And sorry, but that's it already, nothing else earns a star: 2/10.

This is my worst rating this season. I feel it's justified since it sums up all the letdowns this season.

There's been just so many logical errors during this season, so much happened that doesn't make any sense in the show universe. Please note that I don't compare books and show here.

It was even hard to bring myself to watch the second half of this season.

They are my favourite books of the series, so there's that.

But Feast cliffhangers were resolved in Dance, as it went a bit longer timewise.

But yeah. I think they were brilliant. Enough to finish their current story and enough to make you want more, make theories what comes next.

The omission of the Battles is the best thing. I love that. Especially in the North. Without it the Letter wouldn't even work. It is also a good thing to do in a pov based book, because you then hear about the thing from different guys that heard different stories. Now which one is true? That is what I love about it.

Also, they are setup books for Winds and Dream.

If Jon went any minute longer it would have spoiled the next book. And so we have to guess what sorta thing he becomes. Far more interesting.

The show is mean though. They make cliffhangers others would do if the next episode comes in 2 weeks.

It's far too unconclusive and unsatisfying. Not even a nice music piece at the end.

Season one was the best one. I watched the show before I came to the books, and that was such a satisfying, depressing and hopeful finale.

Season 2 was rubbish. Anticlimactic and boring. Underwhelming. Illogical.

Season 3 was a nice Ghandi moment. Liked it a lot, but perhaps the ending of Dracarys would have been better here. With her army and the dragons marching forward.

Season 4 was bad. Arya having a Marlboro moment with her horse riding towards a salt producing coast. Yeah. In the North. Nevermind that, but her as closer was horrible.

Tyrion would have been better, as much as I dislike the guy.

Or Stoneheart. And that one I dislike even more.

Season 5 shouldn't have had ftw. Either never ever, or in s6 e 1. And Dany with Drogon would have been a better choice even. Or Varys and Kevan. Or Doran's speech. Anything really. Something depressing and something hopeful. At least have Sansa wade through snow into a forest, look back, march forward, Theon being no longer Reek. Maybe carrying her, since she might have had a broken leg. Give some guy a bit of old chivalry and heroics. Not all men are rapists.

Eh, I feel like you still have to give the show some credit. Yeah, it has some nonsensical bits to it and yeah not everything has been perfectly written, but compared to your average sitcom or TV drama the quality is still light years ahead. There are still plenty of interesting characters, and the acting talent alone deserves at least a bit of credit. Everyone one of the actors on this show would be the best actor on your average TV show on NBC or Fox. Sure, Jamie and Bronn had a pretty whatever storyline this season, but they're still both phenomenal actors.

Stop it! That would have been so great.

Or just a shadow, clouds, making it all dark and giving Stannis an upper hand by that, similar to LotR.

Or have her in the battle. I waited 2 seasons for her to burn a fucking eagle. Never happened. The moment I started loving her in the books. She could have rode in scarlet through the snow and burned Bolton men without touching them. Spontaneous combustion.

Thanx for your comment. It's true that I much like a lot of the cast (e.g. Jerome Flynn), locations, costumes, castles, imagery, and so on. What disappointed me multiple times this season, is the show's storytelling.

There's sudden changes in people's characters; there's people doing stuff that just doesn't make sense and there's other people not doing what every sane person would do; there's been missing attentions to detail that made the show universe pretty inconsistent.

Many things seemed to happen more or less randomly this season, in a way that prevented me from bonding with any one character. You just don't know how that character will be like in the next scene, or the one after that.

I thought this episode in enormous improvement over the last one. There were a few disappointments and head-scratchers; but I'm inclined to give it a 9 (opted in the end for 8). (I'm here talking about this specific episode, not the season as a whole.)

From a show-watching point of view, I'm glad to see the end of Stannis as he has been portrayed in the show (and Brienne was good). But as a book-reader, it's a little disappointing to

find out so early that he won't get the Iron Throne. I'd have liked for Book Stannis to be a contender for longer. (My remark about the show portrayal isn't directed against the acting,

but the writing.)

Winterfell/Sansa/Myranda/No-Longer-Reek was actually pretty good, possibly because (by this season's standards) it was fairly close to the books. I'm disappointed at the almost total

erasure of Stark loyalists; but that's something for my global assessment of the season, rather than this particular episode.

Well, at least we're done with Dorne now, and we got a nice father-daughter scene. Myrcella's attitude seems to have changed markedly from before; and she takes the news that she is

an incest… I don't have time to fight speech recognition right now, so I'll just say illegitimate offspring… awfully well. I'm sorry she's gone, but doubt her demise makes much

difference in the long run.

Arya's assassination of MT was excellent, mainly thanks to MW's acting skills. I scratched my head a bit over JH's (if it is JH) death (if it is a death).

Meereen/Dothraki/Daenerys was decent, although I'm not sure what was happening at the end. I missed the bit where she hears voices from her past, but am not sure how they could

have transferred it to the screen.

King's Landing was also pretty well done. (Oddly, it too was pretty close to the blocks. Coincidence [finally; you wouldn't believe how long it took to get speech recognition to type

that fairly common English word]? Perhaps.) I did try to avert my gaze during the Walk of Shame, a scene that makes one uncomfortable even in the books.

Wall: Well, we saw Olly stabbing Jon about 1,000,000 miles away. I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would; and am wondering if my objection isn't primarily based on the fact that

it isn't the same as the books. Maybe Olly actually has more of an impact to an Unsullied (non-book) viewer than do Y and BM. My other question being whether it was as screamingly

obvious to Unsullied that Olly was going to do the deed. (Book readers knew that someone had to do it.)

A couple of things about the stabbing did disappoint me. Firstly, I was hoping Ser A wouldn't be involved, since he was one of the relatively few characters who are arguably more

interesting in the show. Secondly, they didn't really build up to it with the Pink Letter, Jon speech, Wun Wun, etc. By comparison, the Uncle Benjen was a bit lame.

I rate it an 8/10. In my opinion it was a great episode, but could have been better (of course). Frankly considering what they had to start with they did a remarkable job making it not only interesting but intelligible in a TV format. The cliffhangers were annoying but they were all in the books as well, so how much can you really complain? It's an irritating conceit that Martin has in his books, made even more irritating considering his glacial writing pace. Everything about the episode - costumes, music, sets, acting, FX - was top notch.

If I could have changed anything I would have shown an actual resolution to the Brienne/Stannis meeting (i.e., does she kill him or capture him?), and allowed a 30 second interaction between Daenerys and the Dothraki, so we know if their intentions are friendly or not. That is my only quibble.
