Hi, I've lurked for about a year, mostly browsing the fantasy recommendation threads. I'm pretty new to the genre; I had a bias against all the weird names. But all that changed when I started reading ASoIaF 2-3 years ago to fill the Harry Potter void. Now I find myself wanting to read fantasy more than anything else. I just got The Passage and will get to it as soon as I finish A Shadow in Summer

I must ask, how much of a shock was it reading ASoIaF to fill in for Harry Potter? Going from Haggred to Gregor Clegane and all should be eye-popping for anyone.

Welcome everybody!

Re: Harry Potter. Speaking for myself, I too come from the HP fandom, and I've had absolutely no problem with Gregor B) because the two sagas are so different that comparisons are impossible for me. I'm also a Robin Hobb fan, but it would be really impossible for me to compare her to Rowling and Martin. Each of them is in a class of his or her own.

Greetings. My name is Josh, I discovered AGoT about six months ago and have been completely obsessed ever since. Currently I'm only about halfway through Crows, but I think I have been reading this one slower because I know the next book isn't released yet and I want to prolong the experience. I can't believe it took me 32 years to discover GRRM. He is, imo, the best writer to ever put pen to paper. Ever.

When I was a young lad, I discovered the Dragonlance: Chronicles books. Loved them. Never got into D&D or anything like that, but I enjoyed fantasy, I read some Conan stories and Conan comics, the usual. Couple years later my mom gave me the Lord of the Rings books as a gift. I was memorized. To me, at that time, Lord of the Rings and JRR Tolkien was the beginning and end to all things fantasy.

Fast forward about 20 years. Now, forget Lord of the Rings. ASoIaF makes it look like child's play. I've been around the block, read a few books in my time (including the Wheel of Time books), I'm actually an editor (non-fiction but still), and I really feel that GRRM is one of the greatest writers to ever live, and ASoIaF is one of the greatest stories ever told.

Welcome Grier!! I really like your Av.

After lurking for a year..Which thread(s) pushed you over the edge, and made you want to post?

Or was it something else entirely?

Thank you! I joined because I wanted to use the search function :cool4:

I think I expected it from reading the reviews, so it wasn't too much of a shock. I like dark stuff so it was a nice change of pace.

Hey! My name is Averie, and I'm a kinda-lurker (but try not to, 'cause this place sucks time like a kid with a milkshake). I've been reading fantasy since my sister managed to switch me from the girlish pony-porn (as the saying goes) to girlish fantastical pony porn. Which is to say, she handed me a copy of Alanna (with this cover) and said, "I think you'll like this". It's been, ah, 10 years since then and I've read plenty (though some in such short order I've forgotten them).

Anyway, I'll be returning to (mostly) lurker status, but at least not full lurker. Right?

Hello! You can call me xiy. I actually joined a while back (you can tell from the join date), but I haven't really posted much until now. I've mostly been lurking around.

I love reading, and I've been reading fantasy almost exclusively for a few years now. I started reading ASoIaF--I heard a lot of good stuff about it--in December, and I liked it right from the first Bran chapter.

Though, speaking of fantasy, I'm rather picky about what kind I read. It has to be original and not have too many hopeless cliches; the characters have to be engaging and three-dimensional; stuff like that.

I'm also a bit of a grammar nut, and I get worked up over stuff like the misuse of commas/semicolons/apostrophes. It gets a bit stressful at times. I'll try not to harp publicly on anybody's grammar, though. ^_^

Hope to have lots of fun here!

Hi all, I'm Neal, an electrical engineer who spends way too much money on books and wine. I've been mostly lurking the literature forum for book recommonendations but figured I should actually start posting :)

Hey! My name is Mike, I have been floating for about two months or so. I loved reading everyone's opinions on everything, but i originally just felt like I had nothing to contribute. After a re-read, i now feel current enough to start sharing (preaching?) my opinion! I can't wait to dive in with the best of them.

Hi,

I guess you could call me Echo. I've been lurking for a couple days, but I couldn't help but join. Unlike most of you, I only really started reading ASOIAF a few weeks ago (I'm bandwagoning, I know). Actually, I first read Game and Clash when I was twelve, and you can understand why it took me a long time to go back. But having seen all the praise for the series, I thought I'd give it another try, and I fell in love with them.

Anyway, I can't wait Dance, but till then, I guess I'll have to be content with speculating and rehashing the first two.

Hi, all!

Echo - two? Have you read A Storm for Swords and A Feast for Crows? Or do you really mean just the first two right now, and you'll rehash the others when Dance is closer to release?

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Well, once I finished Game the first thing I did was get the rest from the library and read those. I finished reading them all a couple weeks ago.

Well I guess I'd better sign myself in then... My name is Fiachra and I'm from Dublin, Ireland. I like writing and I'm currently finishing my second fantasy novel. Writing is pretty much what drove me to pick up A Game of Thrones as I heard that it was rather unique in the fantasy genre. It's also what drove me to join this website - to discuss Martin's work as I'm now almost finished it.

You ''shouldn't'' have too much trouble with me, breaking the rules because I also run my own writing based forum. ^_^ Then again, you never really know...
