Hello,

My name is Seth and I am new here. I have been posting already, but as I just found this thread, I figured I would drop in and actually introduce myself. I finished ADWD almost a month ago now, but I didn't start the series until after I watched Season 3. After seeing the show, I deduced that if it was such an amazing show, the books must be way better. I couldn't have been more right. Before experiencing GRRM's work, Tolkien was my favorite author and The Hobbit was my favorite book. After reading ASOS, that quickly replaced Hobbit on my last and after finishing ADWD, I can say that personally I enjoy GRRM's writing style and consistency so much that he has taken the #1 spot from Tolkien on my list.

I now am starting to consider stopping watching the show depending on when the next books are released so I don't spoil anything for myself. I cannot get enough of this series. I think about it constantly at work and home and frequently discuss it with fellow book readers. What GRRM has done here is astounding and I'm happy to be a part of this community. A little more about me, I love photography and playing the drums. Music is a huge part of my life and Ramin Djwandi has done a fantastic job for the show. Hope to speak with all of you more on here.

Regards,

Seth

Hi Seth,

Welcome! :)

I liked what you wrote so I copied and sent it to my daughter. She likes the show, but didn't like GRRM's writing after reading a couple chapters. I've been telling her she's missing out.

Anyway - hope you have fun here. I do!

Hello everyone. I have lurked for a while and ready to participate.

My name is Vita and obviously I love GOT. I read the first book six years ago and was hooked since. I enjoy reading and writing and look forward to learning and sharing our love of this series! Thank you.

Vita

Hi Vita!

Welcome and have fun. There's a lot to do in Westeros. Personally, I'm geeking out about the World Cup. There are Westeros fans who also like sports - not a ton, but some.

Thanks so much. I do have world cup fever! My favorite teams are USA, South Africa, UK, and Spain. When it's not the WC season I support Real and Arsenal mainly.

Hello, everybody! I've lurked around here for what could easily be years, but never got around to register. Until now. I'm from Germany, I studied history and now I'm working as an archivist. I read A Game of Thrones back in 1997, but then lost sight of the series. Then I discovered A Dance With Dragons in my favorite bookstore, bought that and all previous books and was hooked since then ^_^ I don't have favorite characters, but there are several I find very interesting. For example Bran, I can't wait to see what will become of him!

I did watch the first season of the show and the first episodes of the second one, but then stopped, because for me the TV show can't do the complexity of the books any justice. And I don't want to lose my time with fretting about all the changes they make and all the things they leave out. I was quite curios about Oberyn and the Mountain though, so I watched that episode two weeks ago and found it pretty entertaining. Show Oberyn seemed to be just as cool as book Oberyn, at least.

Aside from ASoIaF I love Terry Pratchett, BioWare games, Harry Potter, Stephen King and the Roma Sub Rosa series. Among other things ^_^

I hope I can encourage her to give it another shot. I am not sure what country you are from, I am from the US, which is why I think I like GRRM a little bit better. Tolkien was a English Linguist and I think sometimes some of his writing goes a little over my head. Obviously works like The Simarillion are written more like a bible and can be difficult to read, whereas GRRM seems more consistent with one style and it seems to be a style I understand a bit better. That's not to say I don't love Tolkien though!

Also, thanks for posting the link to the WC. I am obviously rooting for USA, but my family lived in Germany until my father was 3 so I have strong ties to the German team, and that's who I am really pulling for. Die Deutsch Nationalmannschaft!

Aaaand 120 odd posts later I finally realised there's an introduction thread :)

I'm Sam and I'm from England. I'm a part time novelist (hopefully full time one day!) and I've been in love with the fantasy genre since I was a kid. I somehow managed to miss the hype of the books and started reading after watching season 1 of the show, been hooked ever since :D

So, hello!

The Germans look awful strong in the cup. I'm getting the sense it may come down to them & the French, but maybe I'm crazy.

My daughter replied and said, in essence that he's not changing her mind, plus she doesn't have time to read . . .so we'll see.

Jon Weirgaryen is right. If you're only part way into book 1 you want to be careful which Westeros forums you go into. In most of them they're going to assume you've already read all the books.

So, hello!

Another writer! Not me, but I know other posters who are working on fantasy novels of their own.

Hi I'm Lance and I have a lot of interests that are classified somewhere in geekdom like gaming, superhero stuff, premium TV, and all types of sci-fi.

I'll mostly post in the Literature and Entertainment forums until The Winds of Winter drops.

Hi Lance!

Many of us like those same things. Not so many sci-fi fans actually, but enough.

Natalie is indeed stunning! Do we have an appreciation thread here about all the beautiful women on GoT and wcw's? This is the wrong place!

Previews aren't indeed enough! They make me more "hungry" for the actual book...

ASoS of course, so many epic events happened then!

Greetings! My name is Katie. I'm from the west coast of the United States. I wanted to sign up sooner, but I also wanted to read more of the books first before joining, since I figured this place would be spoiler heaven. I've just started AFFC and am enjoying it so far, though I find myself reading it much slower than the previous books. I've loved the show and the books starting 2 years ago, when I was recommended to watch the show and read the books by my ex-boyfriend's sister. Upon watching the first episode, I was completely hooked. And the books blew me away, I couldn't get enough. Last December, I drove from California to Portland, listening to the ASOS audiobook the entire way (15+ hours!). I plan on reading the books over again once I finish ADWD to absorb everything better and see what I missed/didn't understand the first time around.

I'm really excited that I signed up, and it's a pleasure to "meet" you all! There are so many subforums, I hardly know where to begin. :D

Hey Four-Eyed Raven!

Welcome.

You were right. This is definitely spoiler heaven. Not only that, but these boards abound with theories and counter theories. Most of them I personally never dreamed of till I got here, but several I now accept as gospel (or the next best thing).

So my advice? Finish the books, then dig in to Westeros (as we all settle in for the long wait for TWOW) and prepare to have your perception of ASOIAF (A Song Of Ice And Fire) rearranged!

Enjoy! :)
