Michael Seswatha Jordan
If Calland theory is correct I am going to be so pissed off. Me too, I've said that would suck before. I'd rather our world as we know it, not have any part in it.
Sci-2
If Calland theory is correct I am going to be so pissed off. Yeah I don't think the computer nano-tech simulation thing is going to happen. There'll be an allegorical connection - like how the Weapon Races are leased AI as HE nicely put it - but there's no way Earwa is a giant machine or computer. lokisnow
OMG the whinging, madness' forum couldn't be arsed to post contact info for overlook on their equivalent thread and he's moaning and groaning here?! Amazing, the hubris, bakkers fans clearly suffer from severe blind brain : it's all about MEEEE! I am so injured, personally by some general event, waaaaaah me me me ! Larry of the Lawn
I'd mostly be pissed by Callan's theory because I actually don't understand it at all. What, just some last minute twist 'gotcha, it was just a dream/matrix/fuck all of you who have read the books until now' type deal. Dunno, just my aesthetic preference, but it's not for me. I believe you sum up my feelings well. I can see where it makes sense and something I could see Bakker pulling. Just not what I want at all. Kalnak the Magnificent
What would be the point of a computer sim? It's functionally and thematically the same as "it was all a dream" from Dallas or "they were all dead" from Lost. Why would I care about any of the series? I guess it's better fanfic than say that story about Mario and Luigi banging, but only marginally.

What, just some last minute twist 'gotcha, it was just a dream/matrix/fuck all of you who have read the books until now' type deal. Dunno, just my aesthetic preference, but it's not for me. I think it does make some amount of sense, at least in the sense that much of the symbolism will fit this reading on some level. We know the story is about transhumanism and AIs in part, not to mention the relation between computer programs and our human wiring. We are the Sranc, not the humans, in the story - at least if we also lack souls (or some other aspect of humanity the differentiates us from machines). We know the world is referred to as the God's dream. This is in line with the idea it's all a simulation. Both magic and the Bios require "language" manipulation - in the former it's about Logical Grammars and the in the latter it's about DNA. I just think there aren't nearly enough clues for this to be an actual turn in the story, but it's all very much inline with Bakker's own questions about what makes a human being human. Kalnak the Magnificent
I think it would be a useless answer to the questions and mysteries posed. That'd go well with bakkers overall theories, but from a narrative value it would be complete crap.
kuenjato
OMG the whinging, madness' forum couldn't be arsed to post contact info for overlook on their equivalent thread and he's moaning and groaning here?! Amazing, the hubris, bakkers fans clearly suffer from severe blind brain : it's all about MEEEE! I am so injured, personally by some general event, waaaaaah me me me ! See, now I'm going to take a different tack ('cause I agree, to some extent, about the whinging): this forum is probably the locus of Bakker discussion on the entire net. There is more activity and more concentrated theory regarding the books on Westeros lit than on the semi-official site, indeed, no other series has been plumbed to its depths so thoroughly and extensively. With that said, however, there is a weird, very negative flipside to the fandom here that can come across rather extreme, obsessive, and nasty. Those of us that have been here for years (like myself, if mostly lurking) recognize this, I think. The 37 + misc. threads are simultaneously the most intellectually stimulating of 'Bakkerdom' and yet, at times, almost comically self-loathing / vicious. I think that underlies some of the frustration we've seen. When coupled with the fact that the concluding volume has been seriously delayed (leaving us panting and scrabbling and waiting for that, um, 'stripper g-string moment' ... Bakker sometimes really does himself no favors), and the frustration is rather understandable. Bakker should just release that sample chapter so that we can get some tangible theory traction. Callan S.
"I have searched, for nearly the length of your entire life, and I have found nothing that contradicts the Principle." I suddenly read that as Moe having post natal depression...lol! Only once Kellhus is born does he go 'Aww fuck it, that's ruined things - maybe something will break the principle and I'll get outta dis!" Callan S., ooooh that's good and it correlates exactly with something I picked up on the other night on reread.
When big moments happen in Earwa, the POV character always describes a buzzing in their head. Its like their so close to the fabric (Machines) of what Earwa is......they hear it? Or as you say feel it in their bones? Cnauir explains that feeling at Kiyuth, and I remember that same feeling being described throughout the series. Conphas also details that feeling when being welcomed by Xerius after Kiyuth. Like the world is hanging in that moment.
I hadn't noticed that - I'll have to look out for that on a reread! Gasp of Many Reeds
We know the world is referred to as the God's dream. This is in line with the idea it's all a simulation. It's hard to tell if this is a direct clue to the world's metaphysics or if it's more just part of the Earwan religious worldview. Pretty much every major world religion has posed the 'world-as-a-dream-of-God' idea at some point. I think the nature of the simulation, if there is going to be one, is more going to be rooted in cognition, i.e. a deconstruction of the Kantian constitutive principles imposed on the world's reality to enable its apprehension, except that obviously with Bakker the phenomenal world is going to be experienced in terms of the neglectful, biased and largely unconscious categories of Blind Brain Theory, as opposed to Kant's all-powerful reason. So, for example, the horrors of Damnation may turn out to be an effect of the flawed cognitive effort to impose narrative and 'justice' to a reality bare of such false human notions.
