Horpe is one of the best warriors in the land. He would have been a Kings Guard to king bob but Cersei spoke against him. You have to be a bad mofo if Cersei is disturbed by you. Also under rating the giant slayer, he is pure bad ass. As shown in the battle vs the wildlings. If Farring was some scrub he wouldnt have been able to rack up all those kills during the first battle and then had the balls to run down a giant, lance his back and get up to his neck and saw off its head. He also knows Jon Snow is no scrub and really wanted to duel him and possibly win long claw. But as I said Stannis who hands down is one of the best and smartest commanders (I think he is the best but that can be debated) would not have someone leading the van guard who didnt know how to get things done. And King Bob knew his stuff to. And in general Horpe was obviously considered skilled enough to be a KG which does say something. Jaime even thinks that the blackfush could give him a good fight if he was younger so the BF is no slouch.
