Canadian politics- "to work! We have a government to defeat!"

Got friends and family working in Fort Mac.  Everyone is safe but will not know the damage until the fire is subdued.  Hard times ahead.

Seems like PM JT is in some hot water over an ill advised foray across the house floor.  The opposition parties are milking this for all it's worth but the rhetoric is so over the top that it may well ruin any sympathy they might have garnered over this.  If nothing else it has made question period interesting for a little while.  lol #elbowgate.  :P

Story.

It's all embarassing honestly.

They should've just committed to acting like the posturing children the majority of them fucking are and start throwing their shoes at each other and shit.

From the video I saw, the press on this seems totally hyperbolic.  I am in no way a fan of Trudeau but the reaction to this is overblown.

I saw a poll recently that said media we believed less often than politicians now.  This is a perfect example of why. Its almost as if they are motivated by getting clicks and being quoted rather than actual reporting of the truth.  Unless they are pushing an agenda, where you don't get the whole truth anyway.

Considering how the Conservatives nearly destroyed Canada while Harper was in power, I'm willing to give Trudeau a tremendous amount of slack. Especially over shit that doesn't matter.

The overblown reaction is coming from the Cons and the NDP more then from the media.

It's like one of those scenes from a soccer match where someone gets bumped into and then goes down like their leg is broken. And when you act like that any sympathy for what happened to you disappears.

It's just has a kind of grade school playground quality to it.

I mean, if you watch Brosseau's face, her expression has this kind of shocked amusement to it until you see her grasp the hay she can make from it [unless being hit in the breast is akin to being nutted? Like, even an impact that isn't even that hard can creep up and cramp you?] I don't know. I particularly love Muclair kinda laughing, then later with his finger raised, yelling in Trudeau's face.

We should just flush the toilet and get rid of the lot of them.

Somebody assessed the situation in terms of penalty minutes and gave the Tories 2, Liberals 4 (Trudeau for two separate offenses), and the NDP 8. Sounds about right.

I was trying to find Terry Milewski's interview with Elizabeth May yesterday where she explains the story behind the rising antagonism.  The CBC has not posted it to either their web page or their Facebook page, surprise surprise.  You may have heard that the NDP called for a snap vote the other day in the House when they noticed there were more opposition MPs in the House than Liberals.  The bells rang and the Liberal whip had to work his butt off to get enough MPs in to avoid a defeat, but there was a tie, only the 11th in Canadian history, requiring the Speaker to cast the tie-breaking vote for the government.

Now, that kind of a stunt being pulled doesn't exactly foster friendly relations between the government and the opposition.  The Liberals then called for a vote on closure of the assisted-death bill, which some people say was retaliation for that snap vote, and that made the NDP decide they would block the vote.  Apparently there's a three-minute rule about getting all parliamentarians into their seats before a vote can be held.  The whips walk along the front of their benches on the floor of the House to confirm all of them are in their seats (you can't vote unless you are in your seat), so a bunch of NDPers milled on the floor blocking Gord Brown, the Conservative whip, to prevent the vote from being called, and the reason why everyone was standing to one side.  That's when the PM obviously got pissed off and walked over to Brown to escort him back to his seat so the vote could be held.

The PM should not have done that, no doubt, someone else should have handled the situation, although I'm not sure what could have been done.  I assume they would have lost the opportunity to vote, and then a complaint would have been made to the Speaker, who would have had to sanction the NDP or something.  Then the vote would have to be held on another day, once again delaying action on the bill.  Presumably the NDP would then do it all over again with different MPs.  Elizabeth May said both the Conservatives and the NDP were cooking up "mischief", so the whole blocking Gord Brown thing may have been an act by both parties.

I could not find the Elizabeth May interview but there has been a frame-by-frame breakdown of what actually happened posted on You Tube which is quite edifying.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn9Up-tjmoM&feature=share

I find it hard to sympathize with the Liberals' inept application of procedure, especially as it pertains to something like medically-assisted dying. Why limit debate? Why invoke closure? Especially after the recent Alberta court ruling suggesting that the bill is inconsistent with the prior Supreme Court ruling (before it's even passed).

In the meantime, the Liberals are trying to stack the deck (loaded words, I know) on electoral reform by appointing a Liberal majority committee and denying the numerous provincial (to say nothing of international) precedents on the same.

It's not the Opposition's job to make passing bills easy for the Government.

Maybe the PM should spend less time on vapid photo-ops and more on his legislative agenda.

None of this means the Opposition's reaction to all this has not been over-the-top, but that doesn't mean it excuses Trudeau's behaviour either. People who lose their temper and start grabbing co-workers arms while elbowing (and swearing at) other co-workers either get fired or sent to anger management.

Fucking please dude. The NDP is trying to use stupid procedural bullshit to block up our government and then trying to blow this recent nothing incident into a huge deal in order to score political points. It's pathetic. Snap votes out of nowhere to try and stop bills from passing? This is the shit I expect from a dysfunctional city council or the US congress.

And wasn't it May who also commented upon the statistics of how many actual assaults, abuse, and rapes would've occurred during the time they were all making their statements? Like 1500 or so truly aggrieved Canadian citizens while our politicians are falling over themselves trying to explain how shocked and dismayed and traumatized they were by this event?

I don't care what party they're in or what motivated it. Goddamn shameful.

The Liberals are disorganized and were caught unprepared. It is NOT the Opposition's job to agree, for example, to limit debate on major bills on highly charged, controversial topics. I don't agree that this was a "nothing" incident and ONCE AGAIN, what Trudeau did was something any "normal" employee would get sent packing for. It's the Speaker's job to maintain order and it's the Sergeant-at-Arms who can compel members. Suggesting this is just some "procedural bullshit" justifies behaviour that is unparliamentary and frankly authoritarian and antidemocratic.

This government is all about image and little else. I expected better.

Bullshit it is. In the few months they've been in power thay've restored much of Canadian science to levels capable of competing with other nations, and dropped many of the stupid lawsuits the Conservatives launched to subvert the constitution. For that alone Trudeau has my everlasting support.
