Ian McShane Cast

There is a scene at the very beginning of the first episode of Deadwood where what's his name, the good-guy gold-prospector , Ellsworth?  he trades some gold to Swearengen for cash and credit at the bar/tables/etc.  He makes a quick question to Al Swearengen (McShane) while getting a shot of whiskey poured, "I heard a rumor, is it true with that limey accent of yours, you're descendant from royalty??"  and without missing a beat , McShane replies, "I'm descendant from all those cock$uckers...." which to me hilariously set the tone for the rest of the show, best line ever.  I'm descendant from all them cocksuckers....  awesome.

"Did you poison Joffrey, Lord Swearengen??"

"I poisoned all them cock$uckers..."

Swearengen: "WU, FEED THE DEAD GOLD-CLOAKS TO THE PIGS!"

Wu: "KING'S LANDING COCKSUCKA!!!!!"

"[Ian] McShane spoke with Pop Goes the News at the Los Cabos International Film Festival, where he managed to spill just enough beans about his character to ignite the speculation engine:

"I’ll give you one hint. I am responsible for bringing somebody back that you think you’re never going to see again. I’ll leave it at that."

We’ll get to what that probably means in a moment. But first, here is McShane confirming that it is a single appearance in one episode, which was how he managed to fit the show into his schedule:

"[It’s] a one-off episode. That’s why I did it. But I can’t reveal anything, otherwise I will never work again."

Could be Griff (if it's not too late to bring that into the show/no one has particularly SEEN Aegon/that would take more than one episode) or maybe Howland Reed... Septon Meribald? Thoros/Beric maybe.? Would be a good Randyll Tarly though

Meribald is the most likely option here, I think the somebody he brings back is the Hound. Cant wait for the broken man speech, McShane is the perfect guy to deliver it the with the same wisdom GRRM intended while writing FFC.

That seems almos certain that his role will be wasted as were many other in that series (for example Ciaran Hinds). I can't see anything that would help it at this point, it's makers have some kind of strange tendency to leave out or shorten the most interesting threads and add some dull and pointless action of their own. He'll probably appear for five minutes and then die or something like that.

Yeah, and that's not even the worst of it. For me the role casted without any sense are much more of a problem. Let's take Shae for instance, no matter what we think about physical appearance of the actress who played her (not anymore, haha) it's hard to describe her as innocent and very young. She comes across more like someone who's seen quite a lot in her life and doesn't have any illusions anymore. She certainly doesn's seem to be able to fall in love with anyone and this point is rather important for the development of Tyrion's character (the fact that he subconsciously hoped that she actually loved him and got brought back to reality in a drastic way). More funny, it wouldn't have even be difficult nor expensive to pick somebody more suitable - any porn actress of innocent, youthful looks would do, in this particular case not even acting skills were necessary.

But back to Ian McShane, I wouldn't like to start my active presence here with excessive offtoping ;). I think he'd make an ideal Randyll Tarly and that he could add a lot to his image as honorable an merciless, at the same time, lord. He might also be good as  Aeron the Damphair.

So your saying they should hire shitty actors instead?  The only reason McShane took the role based on his quote above was because it was a small one.  I say if you get a chance to get an actor of McShane's caliber to play a role, any role no matter how big or small, you hire him.

I'm happy to see McShane in pretty much any role. He could come back as re-cast Rickon, and I'd be fine with it.

If he's bringing someone back I have to think maybe Meribald, Marwyn or even Cold-hands.

If it's a flashback, or TEC vision I'd love to see him as the White Bull or some old dead lord or knight of note.

Let's just hope he's not some made-up show-only character

Gotta love people who have nothing but negative things to say.

To me, having someone like Ian McShane in a cameo is great. You can't call it a waste of talent because you have no idea what you are talking about. For all we know maybe Ian said hey, I'd love to be a part of this show, but I am not available much...I only work minor roles at my age...I don't want to work your long schedules...  I mean it could be a million things.

I do agree, he brings back the Hound.

Not much. They only started doing this recently and I'm fairly certain their budgets are bigger now than before. They can afford it, so they do it.

I guess he will play Beric Dondarrion in den last episode and we will see the rising of Lady Stoneheart ;-)

In an BBC5 interview McShane said, he is playing an ex-knight who leads a peacekeeping force.
