Mithras
Assume that the task is the same and the Fellowship will start from Rivendell. Which 9 ASOIAF characters would be best suited for this job? Frodo Bran-Summer would be the obvious choice. Aragorn Jon and Ghost should suffice. Gandalf Bloodraven would be the obvious equivalent of Gandalf. But he is not in a shape to lead an expedition, at least physically. Just have him plugged to a tree in Lorien and let him use an animal to communicate with the others. Mormont’s Raven would be my top choice. Legolas Theon, hands down. Elves do not seem to have dicks in LotR. So, Theon could very well be Legolas. Even without a full set of fingers, he should be able to shoot arrows efficiently. Gimli One word: Tyrion. Note that with Tyrion as Gimli and de-Reekified Theon as Legolas, the chase of the Uruk-hai will be a little harder. Boromir Stannis would be my choice. Struggling with temptations, will to power, eventual downfall etc. Sam Sam. No-brainer. Merry For a character that is supposed to stab the Witch King, I would choose Arya. Besides, she already knows what it means to be taken captive and carried like a sack. Pippin This character is supposed to cause trouble like throwing that damn stone to the well in Moria, or looking into the Palantir. At the same time, this character must be naïve and merry. I would go with Sansa.
Caspoi
Are you in a LOTR mood right now? Anyway I don't Think that it would be a requirement that the characters are as similar to their LOTR counterparts as possible.
Guardian of the Neck
Well, your characters are closest to the LOTR characters. But best suited would,in my opinion be: Ringbearer : Davos,Stannis or Beric Fighters : Jaime,Barristan,Arys Oakheart Guides : Halfhand,Dywen,Jon Magical Support : Bran,Thoros

Nothing
Ned NOT Boromir's substitute? I'm disappointed!
Megz
I will go further and make a 9-member female squad for the task, if you allow me. Frodo - Arya - well... Aragorn - Ygritte - she is a fighter, she is brave and honorable and dedicated to 'impossible love' Gandalf - Melissandre - is explanation required here? Legolas - Meera - admit it, she seems elf-like :) Gimly - Brienne - well, Gim is a dwarf, she is a giant, but apart from that these are strong, dedicated fighters with pure hearts and weapon skills Boromir - Asha - she looks like someone that can be easily tempted with power, otherwise is a good fighter Sam - Sansa - we need a romantic figure, someone with hardly any physical strength, but an endlesss optimist and fairy tale believer to raise the spirit of the squad Merry - Alice Karstark - Pippin - Wylla Manderly - these two seem like naughty and disobedient enough to join a squad and set off to adventure :)
Varyslostloveball
Parallel choices: Bran Stark as Frodo Obvious really. Faegon Brightfire as Aragorn (Alleged) descendant of a magical race of people trying to regain his families throne. Theon Greyjoy as Boromir Mixed loyalties lead to his downfall, sibling forced to step in. Archmaester Marwyn as Gandalf the Grey No sheep here, but certainly grey and magical Tormund Giantsbane as Gimli Short, blunt and hardy, and an important figure to his people Samwell Tarly as Samwise Gamgee Again, obvious Loras Tyrell as Legolas Mostly based on The Reaches flowery comparison with Middle Earth elves Arya and Sansa Stark as Merry and Pippin See OP for details. Edit: Throw in Blood Raven as Saruman, both powerful wizards who went corrupt and use ravens to spy on people. Or for an attempt at GRRM subversion Daenerys as Frodo Actually on a journey, with advisors to help, trying to live up to famous ancestor, but is a girl with dragons to help. Melissandre as Gandalf Travels from a remote and inherently magical land to help the king fight evil forces, survives assassination attempts by magic, specialises in fire, but in reality, doesn't really know what she's doing. Stannis as Aragorn Tragically, the last (true born male) of his bloodline, wields a magic sword.... has the respect of everyone.... and a wizard, but in reality is doomed to failure, because his wizard can't decipher her visions The Ned as Boromir head of a proud and ancient house, reduced to vassals. In an Ironic twist of fate, it will be The Neds idiotic approach to his honour that fucks him up, unlike the actual Boromir. To be played by Sean Bean, or all seven hells will break loose. Victarion Greyjoy as Gimli, Baddass, blunt, respected among his peoples, but he's 7 feet tall and as blood thirsty as a mosquito. Daario as Legolas He's like an elf, but surlier, dirtier, more lust filled and secretly Gimlis brother, dontcha know. Satin as Samwell. Daenerys doesn't need a fat farmboy, she needs a fierce, perfumey rent boy, isn't it obvious? Obara and Brienne as Merry and Pippin Admittedly I didn't try too hard on these
Lccf
My first reaction would be "none of them, most of ASOIAF characters would be SO easily corrupted by the Ring and would steal it after two days".... But thinking about it a bit deeper, maybe some of them may resist the Ring's power ( long enough to finish the task anyway ) : Sam ( like his alter ego Samwise Gamgee ), Davos, Ned ( ironically enough ), Brienne ... that's about everyone I could trust with the Ring right now. Mithras
I can't imagine Tyrion as Gimli. Tyrion killed with battle axe. Plus, there are occasions where Gimli could not hold his tongue and risked his life just like Tyrion. Besides, Tyrion can form an unlikely friendship with traditional enemy. He already did it with Jon.

Mithras
Aerys can be Denethor Nope. Denethor was a good and capable king until he resorted to Palantir out of desperation and fell into the trap of Sauron. Peter Jackson's Denethor was disgusting. Besides, we are looking for replacements in the Fellowship.
