Jo498
I am not even sure whether in Germany there is a mechanism for making books only available from a certain age onwards. (There is for movies, moot that might be in the age of internet porn) That said, even before the internet 14 year olds would not have had a problem to get their hands on such "jerk-off"-material as similar soft-pornish passages have been included in mainstream literature for several decades now. No need to search for Henry Miller... ;) But, prudishly, I do not really think such stuff should be in books explicitly marketed at young teenagers and one should honor them with a "children's book award". This is independent of the fact that probably nowadays teenager would not even get excited because internet porn.

(There is for movies, moot that might be in the age of internet porn) Well, there's the BPjM, which allows for making it available only for adults (including a ban on advertising and displaying it). Strangely, that would apparently still be less restrictive than the ban this book is currently under.
The Marquis de Leech
The issue makes it into The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/07/new-zealand-bans-into-the-river-teenage-novel-outcry-christian-group?CMP=fb_gu “The last banned book was entitled How to Build a Bazooka. Perhaps the content of Into the River is a bazooka fired into the complacent middle class oligarchy that rules this country.”

Yes, but the softy-porny passages are according to today's standards run-of-the-mill for an adult book. To be banned from display and advertising a book would probably have to contain super-explicit cannibalistic Nazi-Porn or sth. like that. I mean, stuff like "The pillars of the earth" contains both juicy sex and offensive rape scenes and nothing like that would have been banned since 1970 or so. Whereas I think that some more explicit stuff of Henry Miller's and maybe also Genet's were banned in the 1950s or 60s. I just saw that explicit Erotica like Nin's "Delta of Venus" were seized by the police from bookstores as late as 1983 in Germany.

My favourite example is River Raid, a video game that was put on the index in the 80ies with claims that it provided kids with "paramilitary training". It was taken off in the early 2000s when Activision wanted to re-release it, after which It got a "recommended for ages 0+" rating.;)
Magnar of Skagos
This is completely ridiculous. How can anybody in their right might support banning a book over sexually explicit content?
