Upcoming Cover Art VII

Redemption's Blade by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

I hadn't heard of this one before. It is hard to keep up with Tchaikovsky's books, I reckon he's got four unconnected novels coming out in just over six months.

Upcoming Tim Powers cover art from Baen:

Alternate Routes

Expiration Date (new edition)

There's always a certain sense of dread I feel when I see the words 'cover art from Baen'. I suppose it's not too bad by the standards of Baen's covers, but still not keen on them.

Upcoming US cover art:

The Reign of the Departed by Greg Keyes.

I'm not sure what happened to Greg Keyes. He started his career with some excellent books, did some solid tie-in work, started off a very good epic fantasy series and then completely screwed the pooch on its ending and since then has really not done much. The cover art of this book doesn't look too great either.

He has been doing movie/videogame tie-in novels in recent years. I actually thought that The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone improved with each book, and the ending was really strong.

Here are "key selling points" for The Reign of the Departed, taken from Edelweiss:

Quote

Lead fantasy paperback original for Night Shade’s Spring 2018 list

First book in a new portal fantasy series from the author of The Briar King and Newton’s Cannon

Author has Bookscanned nearly 900,000 copies – had had massive success with tie-in novels for video games and movies (including Star Wars, Elder Scrolls, Interstellar, Planet of the Apes, and more)

Author’s first new original book in nearly a decade, since The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone (four books published 2003-2008), which Bookscanned 122,000 copies

Strong conceptual comp title is the Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever series by Stephen R. Donaldson: main narrator/hero who is skeptical of the fantasy world he finds himself in; other contextual comps include Guy Gavriel Kay’s The Summer Tree and Tad Williams’ The War of the Flowers

This was supposed to come out about two years ago. I wonder what caused the delay?
