If Viserys had prevailed?...

So the first time we meet Viserys he is a guest of Illyrio Mopatis, who arranged the marriage of Dany to Khal Drogo in exchange for 50,000 dothraki screamers to aid in Visery's future invasion of Westeros. However, in a DoD we also learn that Illyrio and Varys have been plotting together for over a decade to actually put f(Aegon) on the throne. What was their actual true intent as in a DoD, fAegon was supposed to be going to Meereen to try and marry Dany. However, as of a GoT, Illyrio had no idea that Khal Drogo would actually die and that Dany could marry fAegon. Supporting rival claimaints for the iron throne (Viserys and fAegon) at the same time seems incredibly risky. Say for example, that Viserys had prevailed with his invasion what would Illyrio have done? Surely there would have been some kind of sucession crisis. fAegon has already been shown to be hot-headed and having a sense of entitlement and would almost certainty challenge Visery's claim to the throne. However, everybody knows about the existence of Viserys and Dany, unlike that of fAegon who supposodly died. So would the people support Viserys (son of Aerys) rather than Aegon (son of Rhaegar).

Just a thought that came to me - as the endgame of both of these characters was unsure for a time, who would Illyrio have backed if it came to choosing sides?

Oh and first time poster on the forum so be nice^_^^_^^_^

Illyrio and Varys would also have had an agent very near to the dothraki leader in Jorah Mormont, if he had stayed loyal to them and if he didn't fall in love for Daenerys. He is good with weapons, and venom is not out of his way of thinking - he twarthed a poisoning attempt. He would be the perfect man for attempting killing Drogo.
In turn that could have greatly helped "Aegon" in that scenario.
More so if enimity between Drogo's lieutenents could be fostered before and after his planned death.
The masterstroke would have been to be able to organize "Aegon"s and Daenerys's wedding, bringing some of the dothraki loyal to Daenerys to Aegon's camp too, as well as every westerosi supporting that regime.

Illyrio and Varys were confident that Drogo would never bow to Viserys', or indeed Dany's, whims. In the unlikely event that he did, they would allow the Dothraki to come to Westeros and have Aegon swoop in and save the day. All Targaryen claimants to the Throne bar (f?)Aegon himself removed and the army of barbarians crushed - the young "son" of Rhaegar would be welcomed by Westeros with open arms.

I always thought that Aegon was Ilryio's initial plan, though when Viserys and Dany fell into his lap the plans were altered to suit them and the changing situation. Their ancestry was without question after all where as Aegon's isn't. Though when Viserys died and Dany exiled herself in Mereen indefinitely, Illyrio decided to go with Aegon after all.

This is one thing that I've never understood either. That's why I'm convinced that (f)aegon was not planned from the beginning & something GRRM brought in last minute & he's going to have to figure out how to solve. If Varys & Illyrio were team Aegon from the very beginning it doesn't make sense for them to help Viserys at all. The thing to do would be just to kill Viserys & Dany since they are obvious threats to his claims. He wanted to marry Dany to Aegon, but married her to Drogo? He couldn't have known Drogo would die leaving Dany free to marry someone else. He was nice to Dany & Viserys bc he wanted to them to vouch for Viserys? May have worked with Dany at the very beginning but they thought Viserys was going to vouch for someone else's claim and give up his own? None of this makes sense if he was team Aegon from the very beginning.
