Werthead
Quote So if I wanted to read this before it airs, the book Altered Carbon is the first in the series?... it looks amazing As Relic indicates above, a lot of people like to think of Altered Carbon as the only book in the series. Which is a bit harsh, the sequels are both fine, they're just not yet more cyberpunk noir, which was commercially risky but creatively I think the right tack to take. Morgan's Black Man (Thirteen in the USA) is also excellent and, although it's not, you can squint and read it as a prequel to Altered Carbon if you want. The Land Fit for Heroes "fantasy" trilogy is also set in the Altered Carbon universe, although it's completely different in story and style. Quote My recollection is that it was indicated that they were not planning to follow the books, that they'll stick to the milieu of the first novel and, presumably, tell stories more like that one than the later stories. Not sure if Richard indicated it here at some point, or maybe I'm just conflating past speculations from fans, but that's my recollection. Netflix wants the show to last for 5 seasons, so their early plan is to mix the novels with original storylines. To what extent will be determined by how well Season 1 does. They don't need to care about holding the cast though, which is interesting. The first show since Doctor Who I think which has done that.

I'm hoping they adapt Altered carbon in its entirety for season 1 but part of me wonders whether season 2 would be better suited to new stories that continue the cyber noir detective angle than those in book 2? Guess I'm getting ahead of myself which again is why i really hope season 1 is book 1. It's been a long time since I've read them, but I seem to remember there were big time gaps between the books so I think there's plenty of space to fit in some other things Kovacs might have done before getting to Broken Angels. There are time gaps, but the ending of Altered Carbon itself has him leaving Earth immediately, iirc. And certainly leaving the body- I do wonder how they're gonna deal with that part. Like, if they get to later books, by the mores of the world they cannot have the same actor. But by the laws of TV commercialism they're going to want to. Hello World
Saw the images on Reddit a few days ago, thought they were fan art, but they look good. By the way, this series isn't animated, right?

It rings a vague bell and I think it would make more sense for an ongoing tv show to find a way of maintaining the aesthetic of the first book - otherwise it would become something akin to an anthology as the follow ups are pretty different. I think I said way back that I'd love for them to expand upon the "patchwork man" or the AI hotel.

Ran
Nice. AltCarb sounds like it's some sort of diet fad twitter feed, though.
Hello World
There is also a guy who posted these clips on reddit claiming that they're from the show. https://vimeo.com/user75459785/videos

Zorral
The only one of these I really liked was 13. Those trailers or whatever they are: one can't judge by them, since it's so easy to make something that short and detatched from story, character and action look promisingly dramatic and exciting. Trailers for Thor: Ragnorok, gives the impression that the Hulk and Thor are going to thunder throughout the universe -- yet in the scale of the film the Hulk was hardly there. If that's true I don't know what the policy is here when it comes to linking to that stuff. I originally thought those were released in a way similar to the older gifs. Werthead
There is no sound attached to them. I assumed they were posted like that as part of the viral marketing campaign, but yeah, they could be leaks. The watermark suggests that. Someone on Reddit claimed to work on the show: Quote The size of the sets were amazing. They built 2 blocks of 3 storey buildings on either side of an alleyway inside a studio that used to be a newsprint shop and we had to make it all waterproof because they sprayed water from above for practical rain. The production value of Netflix shows are very high.

Ran
The use of Vimeo makes me think these were leaked somewhere in the special effects production chain, given the fact that all the shots feature significant amounts of effects work. Lots of the SFX houses and SFX artists use Vimeo as their preferred place for FX reels and so on.
Hello World
I was just going to say the fact that the clips haven't been taken down yet seems weird if they're leaked... but I checked one last time and they're gone from Vimeo.
Werthead
Yeah, it's gone weird. Someone sent me a bunch of stuff which is clearly from an unfinished promo (which I'm not going to share because that'd definitely get people in trouble, starting with me) where they talk about the moral/philosophical questions of consciousness transferal. My guess is that someone in the editing chain or CGI houses got annoyed after being fired or something and started releasing stuff over the net. Which seems to have led Netflix to start their marketing push out of order. Because that Netflix promo you just shared on twitter will make absolutely no sense to anyone who doesn't already know what Altered Carbon is, and must surely have been intended for release after a few more normally introductory spots. Based on Netflix's responses to the Twitter feed, I think they did intend to kick off this way (by seguing into their other shows), plus the first promo was released before the other leaks got out there. But yeah, so far they've confused people. A lot of folks seem to think this is a Black Mirror episode.
