American Gods on Starz

I think Media feeling overwrought and ultimately shallow is the point though? One of the main criticism of popular culture is how superficial and ultimately unconvincing it is. So Shadow is choosing to go with the flaky, unpleasant, but ultimately more genuine seeming guy.

Yeah, I get that's it's intentional rather than overacting but it's relentlessly too much and it makes my skin crawl, like a really loud buzzing noise that I want to stop or someone shining a really bright light in my face that I want to look away from.

Mad Sweeney is probably my favourite character on the show so I really liked this episode and it is my favourite one of the show so far. Plus I really liked that particular Coming to America story in the book. Of course it was a sidetrack and didn't do that much to much to further the plot, especially since the show already has a very slow pace, but I'll give them a pass this time.

I liked them tying the Essie Tregowan/McGowan to Laura and Sweeney in the show. She's from Cornwall in the book and it's piskies not Leprechauns. Sweeney's expanded role is working for me.

Book Spoilers:

Spoiler

I've just passed Sweeney's death, poor bugger he didn't get much to do in the book. It's remarkable to me how much of an adaptation this is, they really are reshaping (and expanding) it for screen in a big way.

They tied a coming to America vignette that was ultimately a sideshow, and made it about two of our main cast, a job well done.

I really enjoyed that episode, not least because it gave Pablo Schreiber a chance to do something other than his 'asshole' act. Don't get me wrong, he is very good at that, but he got a chance to be more nuanced here, even tender in the final scene. It was very solid stuff.

I can't believe it's the finale next week.

This was probably my favourite episode too, and showed a pretty skilful incorporation of the Coming on America segments and the main narrative/characters.

Question for those who read the book

I remember Wednesday being involved in Laura's death, but in the books was it Mad Sweeny who did that or is it unspecified? I can't remember, though it was a great choice either way, especially with the Laura/Sweeny pairing the show has gone with.

Is the Irish accent literally impossible for most people to pull off successfully? Who is teaching it?

At least it's better in AG than David Boreanaz's alarmingly bad effort in Buffy. Let's just pause for a moment and remember how awful that was. (Starts at 1 min 58).

Been enjoying the series. I listened to the audio book of American Gods in January 2017 - I don't normally say this kind of thing, but the changes that've been made from book to show feel like a big improvement. Especially the fleshing out of Laura's character.

I don't remember it ever being stated or implied in the novel whether Mad Sweeney had any hand in Laura's death. Only that he was used by Wednesday to test Shadow and put extra pressure on him to agree to the deal in Joe's Crocodile Bar. It was more implied that it was Wednesday and Low-Key that set up her death to secure Shadow as a pawn in their plans. I am wondering how far back their plan goes, i.e. did they somehow set Shadow up originally to get arrested for the robbery.

In the book he didn't get arrested (directly) for the robbery, he got arrested because his partners in the crime- Laura wasn't involved- tried to shaft him and he beat the shit out of them. It's possible that it was Wednesday that persuaded his partners to do so, but I don't think it's ever really implied.

No, Sweeney isn't implied to have any hand in Laura's death in the book (but then I don't remember that Wednesday is either? He's a lot less Laura-opposed in general, like he isn't particularly fussed about her coming to visit Shadow after she dies in the book). As mentioned previously, he's a much more minor character really.

But given that it is implied that Wednesday got Shadow's mum pregnant on purpose with this plan in mind, it definitely goes back far enough.

Ah, that's right. I forgot about Shadow's beating of his accomplices.

Laura's death in the novel released Shadow from his only bond in the world, making Wednesday's plans for him that much more likely to succeed. I read into it that Wednesday and Loki had some sort of hand in her death to secure Shadow's part in their plans. Laura's filled out role in the show and some of the early prison and funeral scenes reinforced my take on that aspect of the novel. The show doesn't necessarily confirm the belief I have, but it hints at it.

Just remember... he is also Pornstache.

I always have to remind myself of that because I just struggle to see it (though his cameo in S5 with beard I could tell, though maybe that was because I looked for the similarities)

I'll always know him as Nick Sabotka from The Wire.

That's who he is for me as well.

I never knew he was Liev Schreiber's half brother.

That explains it. Before Liev got all round headed he was a babe too
