American Gods on Starz

I liked the season 2 premiere from a visual standpoint. The House on the Rocks was great, especially the carousel scene and the gods' appearance during it. Nice reference to Frank Lloyd Wright and his Taliesin, also located in Spring Green, Wisconsin. (Can't believe I've never visited either when they're so close.)

Please give Mad Sweeney and Laura something better to do than tagging along with Mr. Wednesday (I can't drop the "Mr." without thinking of The Addams Family.) From next week's preview, it looks like they might branch off on their own arc again.

Shadow seemed a bit off to me. Too talkative and emotional.  Great Gam Gam's death fell flat for me.

I miss the Coming to America segments from last season.

The new Media is irritating.

I'm tired of Laura and Mad Sweeney.

More Ibis and Jacquel please.

At least the show is still visually appealing.

Agreed on virtually all points.... the Laura/Mad Sweeney tandem was great, but now it seems forced... if they waited until the end of the season to reunite them, we'd have probably all been on board.... but now it seems like fan service...

....I would like to see more of most of the old gods, many of who we haven't seen yet....

.... Much like with Vulcan becoming rejuvenated via gun worship.... I imagine that the New gods could entice Bilquis with internet porn...

.... with all its faults... I love this show.

I made a stop at The House on the Rock on my way back from vacation last week. I'm kicking myself for not visiting it sooner. Very cool and unusual place. Alex Jordan was an interesting guy.

I'm getting more and more annoyed by this New Media arc with Techno Boy. My dislike of an episode is proportional to the amount of screen time Techno Boy has in it. The book was better with the new gods as more background characters.

While I liked the beginning of this week's episode with the tech guru, I didn't like much else about it. The beginning of the episode reminded me of the Coming to America segments of last season. I would like to see more of them from the new gods' standpoint like this last episode.

A week off from Laura and Mad Sweeney was nice, but the previews from next week look good with them together.

Nice Deadwood reunion in the diner with Al and E.B. Farnum.

Is it worth watching S2?

The narrative is moving very slowly, if you've read the book.

For example last week's episode was 90% filler, at least by the novels narrative. Then the ending makes the entire episode almost feel like a complete waste of time as a whole.

Thanks Sifth.  I have read the book a few times.

I was wary of returning in case they get worse at dragging it out.  I enjoyed the visual style and some of the additions in S1, like Vulcan and Sweeney/Laura, but it’s too easy to abuse that.

At this point (I have yet to watch last night's episode.) you're not missing much. A lot of wheel spinning this season. Too much time given to the new gods like Techno Boy and Media. I'm not eager to watch weekly episodes like I was last season. Honestly, I'm doing it more because I have nothing else to watch. It may sound harsh, but I'm not too interested in this season.

Same, I'm honestly on the verge of dropping the show. I just no longer get any joy or excitement from watching the show. They also recently killed off one of my favorite book characters waaaaay before he's suppose to die in the books story.

I kind of forgot it was on and I've not fully caught up, but I was barely impressed by season 1 and completely not impressed by season 2. A few good moments, and the visuals are always pretty good, but I'm never excited to see the next one, It's just something to watch. Kind of like I felt about Walking Dead before I dropped it.

I finally watched the Donar the Great episode. My favorite episode of the season so far. This series is a narrative mess, but still visually and conceptually impressive. I liked this double backstory/origin episode. The burlesque show, the homage to Ian McShane's Al Swearengen, the task of fixing Gungnir, the price to etch the runes :)

I mean if they are spinning wheels more than they did in season 1, i strongly suspect i won't bother with my original plan of trying to binge season 2 in the hopes it's not as infuriatingly dull with regards to pace.

Walking dead is a very apt comparison in terms of pacing being an underlying problem (WD was also idiotic in places which this show isn't)

The pace is slow because they've given more screen time to Mad Sweeney/Laura and the Jinn/Salim. I'm no longer interested in the formers' arcs and never cared about the latters'.

Bit sad about Season 2. I was happy to watch it, but at the same time I felt it was a step down from Season 1 in pretty much every way. For me it had lost a lot of the visual flair - it often seemed to know that it should be experimental and clever, but it wasn't sure how. Where S1 seemed almost over-full of ideas about how things could look, S2 was really struggling hard to get in one good moment per episode. That could partly be ascribed to the departure of the original show-runners, and partly to budget cuts.

Spoiler

Spoilers for the book and show below the cut.

Also, Shadow's reasons for staying with Wednesday could really do with being better elucidated. Not in a heavy-handed way, just let Shadow drop a couple of hints. Even if he isn't sure himself why he's staying, let him say that. I have only hazy memories of the book, but I have the feeling that book Wednesday was still potentially a diamond in the rough until quite late in the story. Having Sweeney and Laura as lead characters in the show has tended to highlight his total lack of credibility.

Didn't care for the additional Sweeney background, much as I love watching Pablo Schreiber as Sweeney, but did enjoy Donar the Great.

I'll keep watching if only for the sake of the opening credits. Best ones since Black Sails, imo. And I am interested to see how events are handled in Season 3. I do still think S2 is worth watching.

As far as the book goes . . .

  Reveal hidden contents

do you all think will we see the Lakeside subplot with Hinzelman?

The finale seems to set that up directly for next season.

I loved season 1, followed the BTS drama in the run up to season 2 and was somewhat concerned. Watched the first episode and decided not to continue. Many issues but honorable mention to managing to write Chenoweth out because Wednesday ran over some rabbits last season :dunno:

I finally forced myself to watch the s2 finale after having it sitting on my dvr for several months. While it wasn't a complete waste of an hour of my time, I was also drifting while watching it. The show still looks great, but the plot has always been the weakest element of the show. The book meanders a lot, but in a good way. The show doesn't

I finally got around to actually watching season two and it was entertaining enough, though i did need to binge watch it. If I had a week to think between episodes i wouldn’t have finished. The more I think about it the worse the season seems though, lots of boring sub plots that go nowhere, lots of side arcs that aren’t relevant, lots of flip-flopping characters and bizarre or poorly expressed motivations. At this stage on the show, there is no way Shadow should still be supporting Wednesday.

New Media is awful. And Mr. World...or should that be Miss............ttteeeeeeeeerrrrrr..........Woooooooooo.......rrrrrrrr........llllllll.......ddddddd. Jesus, just spit it out already, why does every sentence take half a day for him to say?

The finale was especially frustrating. Out of curiosity I looked up season three and they are moving on to yet another show runner. Yikes. Sounds like someone hasn’t been observing proper worship of the TV gods :P
