Songs that Make Us Think of A Song of Ice and Fire

Lost Melnibonean

Recommended Posts

Viva la vida  - Robb Stark.

Behind blue eyes - Jaime Lannister.

Cry me a river - Jaime burning Cersei's letter.

Snuff - Tyrion and Jaime (even though it's about a romance so some parts obviously don't fit).

How to save a life - Ned and Robert.

Safe and sound - Arya. Sansa.

Like a virgin - Pia.

No bravery - Riverlands.

Feed the Tree by Belly seems like it could be inspiration for elements of the series, and it was pretty popular back when GRRM was writing his earliest drafts.
This old man I've talked about
Broke his own heart,
Poured it in the ground
Big red tree grew up and out,
Throws up its leaves,
Spins round and round.
I know all this and more
So take your hat off
When you're talking to me
And be there when I feed the tree
This little squirrel I used to be
Slammed her bike down the stairs
They put silver where her teeth had been
Baby silvertooth, she grins and grins
I know all this and more
So take your hat off boy
When you're talking to me
And be there when I feed the tree
Take your hat off boy
When you're talking to me
And be there when I feed the tree
This old man I used to be
Spins around, around, around the tree
Silver baby come to me
I'll only hurt you in my dreams

Tears of the Dragon by Bruce Dickinson reminds me of Rhaegar:

For too long now, there were secrets in my mind
For too long now, there were things I should have said
In the darkness...I was stumbling for the door
To find a reason - to find the time, the place, the hour

Waiting for the winter sun, and the cold light of day
The misty ghosts of childhood fears
The pressure is building, and I can't stay away

I throw myself into the sea
Release the wave, let it wash over me
To face the fear I once believed
The tears of the dragon, for you and for me

Where I was, I had wings that couldn't fly
Where I was, I had tears I couldn't cry
My emotions frozen in an icy lake
I couldn't feel them until the ice began to break

I have no power over this, you know I'm afraid
The walls I built are crumbling
The water is moving, I'm slipping away...

I throw myself into the sea
Release the wave, let it wash over me
To face the fear I once believed
The tears of the dragon, for you and for me

Slowly I awake, slowly I rise
The walls I built are crumbling
The water is moving, I'm slipping away...

Lorena McKennit reminds me a lot of the Riverlands/North in general. Each of her songs could be a different member of the BWB, one of my favorite storylines.

The Highwayman The Highwayman lyrics in particular could be an off-page event happening at some waterlogged inn.

Another song, which is not really a common song, is the song that plays at my grocery store (Giant) about pears. It's a male voice and the deep, softish tone and cadence of the words and the initial repetition of the word "pears" sounds just like he is singing the Bear and the Maiden Fair. So naturally I start singing the Bear and it embarrasses the hell out of my 13 year old boy, which in turn makes me sing it all the more. My poor, poor son

PERFECT! I thought this a while back while reading and am so glad someone thought of it and mentioned it.

No Quarter by Tool.

I imagine the final battle between ice and fire happening with this song... Especially a bit where he sings "It is getting colder" I imagine Dany and Jon staring at each other for first time as enemies and leaders of their factions and feeling something animalistic. Lol, I am weird like that.

Is that a cover of the Led Zeppelin song?

Ok. One more and I'm serious about this. One of the biggest things that grosses me about about this series is how everyone eats and gets grease and butter and drippings all over them and all the lampreys they eat  :ack: So for that'd have to say Brain Eaters by the Misfits

Nothing lasts forever
So don't you ever take a thing for granted
Have you ever wondered
What if we could all just die tomorrow

These situations are elevating
Where dreams are lost all hope is gone
We can't go on living like this
Manipulated by information
All right is wrong all wrong is right
We can't go on living like this

The people keep walking
On tracks that are made by fools who don't care
I don't know why we keep damaging ourselves

Nothing lasts forever
So don't you ever take a thing for granted
Have you ever wondered
What if we could all just die tomorrow
When everything you see is a lie
All you have to do is close your eyes
Listen to the voice inside
Cause our hearts must stay alive

Our hearts must stay alive

All this time
We only tried to find a way to hide it all away
All this time
We only tried to find a way to runaway
Now everything must change

Nothing lasts forever
So don't you ever take a thing for granted
Have you ever wondered
What if we could all just die tomorrow
When everything you see is a lie
All you have to do is close your eyes
Listen to the voice inside
Cause our hearts must stay alive

It's time now
It's time now
It's time now
It's time now

I'm a classic rock guy, so:

"Hey Joe" always comes on in my head when I read about Tyrion in ASOS.

"Behind Blue Eyes"  is my Theon Greyjoy theme song.

"Stepping Razor" is Arya.

"Run to the Hills" is always in my head when Drogo does something.

"Darkstar" is Darkstar.

And the whole damn series, as I've said before, is "Uncle John's Band":

Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more,
'Cause when life looks like Easy Street, there is danger at your door.
Think this through with me, let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?

It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me? Won't you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their wall are built of cannonballs, their motto is "Don't tread on me".
Come hear Uncle John'n Band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.

It's the same story the crow told me; it's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?

I live in a silver mine and I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune,
anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about, here beside the rising tide.

Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.

Had a Dad by Jane's Addiction always makes me think of Robert Baratheon...

Quote

If you see my dad
Tell him my brothers
All gone mad
They're beating on each other

The only song for Daenerys is Meu limão, Meu limoeiro by José Carlos Burle, better known in the U.S. as Lemon Tree, sung by various artists, notably Peter, Paul and Mary...

Quote

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
