Songs that Make Us Think of A Song of Ice and Fire

Recommended Posts

Oasis's "Wonderwall" reminds me of Sam and Gilly,

"...and all the roads that lead the way are winding,

and all the lights that light the way are blinding,

there are many things that I would like to say to you,

but I don't know how,

Because maybe,

youre gonna be the one who saves me,

And after all,

youre my wonderwall..."

This one for Jon, because of course while researching something else totally unrelated, I came across this...

A Johnny Jump Up is a kind of flower, a hybrid of a few species, and part of the pansy family.

And we have this:

A Game of Thrones - Jon VII

Jon saw at once what Sam meant. He could see the torn veins in the dead man's wrist, iron worms in the pale flesh. His blood was a black dust. Yet Jaremy Rykker was unconvinced. "If they'd been dead much longer than a day, they'd be ripe by now, boy. They don't even smell."
Dywen, the gnarled old forester who liked to boast that he could smell snow coming on, sidled closer to the corpses and took a whiff. "Well, they're no pansy flowers, but … m'lord has the truth of it. There's no corpse stink."

Which brings us to the song Johnny Jump Up, a traditional Celtic style song with a part about a guy everyone thinks is dead, but then comes back to "life". He was just drunk on cider. This is truly one of my most favorite songs in real life, and I am shocked I never thought of this sooner. It is THE best song to sing and dance to when enjoying a pint or a few fingers.

I'll tell you a story that happened to me
One day as I went down to Youghal by the Sea
The sun it was bright and the day it was warm
Says I, "A quiet pint wouldn't do me no harm"

I went to the barman, I says, "Give me a stout"
the barman, "I'm sorry all the beer tis sold out
Try whiskey or vodka, ten years in the wood"
Says I, "I'll try cider, I heard that it's good"

Oh never, oh never, oh never again
I live to a hundred or a hundred and ten
I fell to the ground and I couldn't get up
After drinking a pint of the Johnny Jump Up

After lowering the third I headed straight for the yard
Where I bumped into Brophy the big civic guard
"Come here to me boy you know we're the law"
Well I upped with my fist and I shattered his jaw

He fell to the ground with his knees crumpled up
For t'wasnt I hit him t'was the johnny jump
And the next thing I met down in Youghal by the Sea
Was a cripple on crutches, and says he to me

"I'm afraid o' me life I'll be hit by a car
Would you help me across to the Railwayman's Bar"
And after three pints of that cider so sweet
He threw down his crutches and he danced on his feet

Oh never, oh never, oh never again
I live to a hundred or a hundred and ten
Cause I fell to the ground and I couldn't get up
After drinking a pint of the Johnny Jump Up

Now I went up the Lee Road a friend for to see
They call it the Madhouse in Cork by the Lee
But when I got up there, the truth I do to tell
They had the poor bugger locked up in his cell

Says the guard testing him, "Say these words if you can
'Around the rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran'"
"Tell them I'm not crazy, tell them I'm not mad
T'was only six pints of that cider I had"

Now a man died in the Union by the name of McNabb
They washed him and placed him outside on a slab
And after the coroner his measurements did take
His wife took him home to a bloody fine wake

'Twas about twelve o'clock and the beer it was high
The corpse he sat up and he says with a sigh
I can't get to heaven, they won't let me up
'Til I bring them a pint of the Johnny Jump Up

Oh never, oh never, oh never again
If I live to a hundred or a hundred and ten
'Cause I fell to the ground and I couldn't get up
After drinking a pint of the Johnny Jump Up

Listen here.

Everybody wants to rule the world, in Lorde's version sending chills down the spine. "There's a room where light won't find you", specifically for Jaime.

And Ed Sheeran's I See Fire for Dany :-)

Maids When You're Young Never Wed An Old Man

Likewise. I say we dye the oysters a proper braavosi purple, though. Or is the cult blue? Dye them both to be safe.

Mayhaps it's a blue so dark it looks purple in a certain light.

Over on the Riverlands Web we had running joke about our favourite horse, 'Stranger' being locked up on the Quiet Isle.  It always reminded me of Iron Maiden's 'Stranger in a Strange Land', some of the lyrics are quite apt..  :)
