Songs that Make Us Think of A Song of Ice and Fire

Recommended Posts

Are You Experienced? By Jimi Hendrix for Pyat Pree.

On a double bill with Hotel California? Totally! :D

Although the words don't match very well (unfortunately), the theme of Castles Made of Sand fits TWo5K, and Theon and Stannis in particular, rather well.

I don't know why I didn't think of these sooner:

Aerys', the Mad King, lament for the Valyrians and the ending of an epoch -

Children of the Sea

by Black Sabbath

In the misty morning, on the edge of time,
We've lost the rising sun, a final sign.
As the misty morning rolls away to die,
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky.

We sailed across the air before we learned to fly,
We thought that it could never end.
We'd glide above the ground before we learned to run,
Now it seems our world has come undone.

Oh they say that it's over
And it just had to be.
Oh, they say that it's over,
We're lost children of the sea.

We made the mountains shake with laughter as we played,
Hiding in our corner of the world.
Then we did the demon dance and rushed to nevermore,
Threw away the key and locked the door.

Oh they say that it's over,
And it just had to be.
Yes they say that it's over,
We're lost children of the sea.

In the misty morning, on the edge of time,
We've lost the rising sun, the final sign.
As the misty morning rolls away to die,
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky.

Oh they say that it's over
And it just had to be.
Oh they say that it's over,
Poor lost children of the sea.

Look out! The sky is falling down!

Look out! The world is spinning round and round and round!

Look out! The sun is going black, black!

Look out! It's never, never, never coming back!

Look out!

And seeing as how GRRM has a penchant for repeating themes and character archetypes, as well as ridiculously flashy armor -

Neon Knights

by Black Sabbath

Oh no, here it comes again,
Can't remember when
We came so close to love before.

Hold on, good things never last,
Nothing's in the past,
It always seems to come again.

Again and again and again.

Cry out to legions of the brave,
Time again to save us
From the jackals of the street.

Ride out, protectors of the realm,
Captain's at the helm,
Sail across the sea of light.

Circles and rings,
Dragons and kings,
Weaving a charm and a spell.

Blessed by the night,
Holy and bright,
Called by the toll of the bell.

Bloodied angels fast descending
Moving on a never-bending light.

Phantom figures free forever
Out of shadows, shining ever-bright.

Neon Knights.

Cry out to legions of the brave,
Time again to save us
From the jackals of the street.

Ride out, protectors of the realm,
Captain's at the helm,
Sail across the sea of light.

Again and again, again and again... and again.

Neon Knights.

"1000 eyes" by Death reminds me of... guess guess XD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjnP7Zut94M

"soul on fire" by Danzig makes me think of the whole series because of the hot and cold stuff in the lyrics

Angels fall to earth
World heats down
Cool
Now your heart is cold
Waiting on the summer
Of my soul

Okay, last one for awhile (I promise :leaving:)

The theme of Robert's Rebellion:

Sixteenth Century Greensleeves

by Rainbow

It's only been an hour since he locked her in the tower,
The time has come, he must be undone
By the morning.

Many times before the tyrant's opened up the door,
Someone cries, still we close our eyes,
Not again.

Meet me when the sun is in the western sky,
The fighting must begin before another someone dies.
Crossbows in the firelight,

Greensleeves waving,
Mad men raving,
Through the shattered night.

Flames are getting higher, make it leap unto the spire,
Drawbridge down, cut it to the ground,
We shall dance around the fire.

No more night,
We have seen the light,
Let it shine on bright,
Hang him higher, higher.

Drawbridge down,
Cut it to the ground,
We shall dance around,
Around the fire.

No more night, we have seen the light,
Let it shine on bright,
Hang him higher, higher,
Put a man on the fire.

Drawbridge down,
Cut it to the ground,
We're going to dance around
The fire, the fire, the fire.

Seven.

(Older versions, not spoilers)

Tywin Red Wedding & KL—Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough—Michael Jackson / That’s theWay (I like it) by KC & the Sunshine Band (you only need the chorus for this one!)

If Tywin and disco are just too much for your imagination, this first clip should help.

With the force, don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
Keep on
With the force, don't stop

Don't stop 'til you get enough
Keep on
With the force, don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
Keep on
With the force, don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
(Ooh)

Oh, that's the way, uh-huh uh-huh
I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh
That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh
I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh

Jaime & Brienne—More Than a Woman by The Bee Gees (they’re even in gold armor, uh, polyester here!)

Oh girl I've know you very well
I've seen you growing every day
I never really looked before
But now you take my breath away
Suddenly you're in my life
Part of everything I do
You've got me working day and night
Just trying to keep a hold on you

Here in your arms I've found my paradise
My only chance for happiness
And if I lose you now I think I would die
Oh say you'll always be my baby
We can make it shine
We can take forever
Just a minute at a time, oh-oh

[Chorus]
More than a woman
More than a woman to me, baby
More than a woman (more than a woman)
More than a woman to me

Oberyn fighting Gregor: Kung Foo Fighting by Carl Douglas The disco version would need to be lightened up a bit obvi.

Varys to Aerys: Pusherman by Curtis Mayfield

ASOS Jaime V

He saw traitors everywhere, and Varys was always there to point out any he might have missed.

I'm your mama, I'm your daddy,
I'm that - in the alley.
I'm your doctor when in need.
Want some coke? Have some weed.
You know me, I'm your friend,
Your main boy, thick and thin.
I'm your pusherman.

Ain't I clean, bad machine
Super cool, super mean
Dealin' good, for The Man.
Superfly, here I stand.
Secret stash, heavy bread,
Baddest bitches in the bed,
I'm your pusherman

Silent life of crime
A man of odd circumstance,
A victim of ghetto demands.
Feed me money for style
And I'll let you trip for a while.
Insecure from the past,
How long can a good thing last?
No, no, no

Only a few more left till the end!

(Older versions, not spoilers)

Just for help with the visuals, here’s Theon, Missendei, Greyworm, Sansa and Varys dancing to Earth, Wind and Fire’s September.

Sansa to LF in the Vale—Jive Talking by the Bee Gees

AFFC Sansa I

He is serving me lies as well, Sansa realized. They were comforting lies, though, and she thought them kindly meant. A lie is not so bad if it is kindly meant. If only she believed them . . .

He saved Alayne, his daughter, a voice within her whispered. But she was Sansa too . . . and sometimes it seemed to her that the Lord Protector was two people as well. He was Petyr, her protector, warm and funny and gentle . . . but he was also Littlefinger, the lord she'd known at King's Landing, smiling slyly and stroking his beard as he whispered in Queen Cersei's ear. And Littlefinger was no friend of hers. When Joff had her beaten, the Imp defended her, not Littlefinger. When the mob sought to rape her, the Hound carried her to safety, not Littlefinger. When the Lannisters wed her to Tyrion against her will, Ser Garlan the Gallant gave her comfort, not Littlefinger. Littlefinger never lifted so much as his little finger for her.

Except to get me out. He did that for me. I thought it was Ser Dontos, my poor old drunken Florian, but it was Petyr all the while. Littlefinger was only a mask he had to wear. Only sometimes Sansa found it hard to tell where the man ended and the mask began. Littlefinger and Lord Petyr looked so very much alike.

It's just your jive talkin'
You're telling me lies, yeah
Jive talkin'
You wear a disguise
Jive talkin'
So misunderstood, yeah
Jive talkin'
You really no good

Mya Stone—Papa was a Rolling Stone by The Temptations (intro ends at ~1:50)

AFFC Alayne II

Mya shook her head. "I remember a man throwing me in the air when I was very little. He stands as tall as the sky, and he throws me up so high it feels as though I'm flying. We're both laughing, laughing so much that I can hardly catch a breath, and finally I laugh so hard I wet myself, but that only makes him laugh the louder. I was never afraid when he was throwing me. I knew that he would always be there to catch me." She pushed her hair back. "Then one day he wasn't. Men come and go. They lie, or die, or leave you. A mountain is not a man, though, and a stone is a mountain's daughter. I trust my father, and I trust my mules. I won't fall." She put her hand on a jagged spur of rock, and got to her feet. "Best finish. We have a long way yet to go, and I can smell a storm."

Hey, mama!
Is it true what they say that papa never worked a day in his life?
And, mama, some bad talk goin' round town sayin' that papa had three outside children and another wife,
And that ain't right
Heard them talking papa doing some store front preachin'
Talked about saving souls and all the time leechin'
Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord
Mama just hung her head and said,

[Chorus]
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone.
Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

Folks say papa never was much on thinking
Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking
Mama, I'm depending on you
To tell me the truth
Mama looked up with a tear in her eye and said, "Son,..

Jon & Daeron write a NW recruitment song: YMCA by the Village People

AFFC Cersei IX: Alone, the Blue Bard's confession would never suffice. Singers lied for their living, after all

Young man there's no need to feel down
I said young man pick yourself off the ground
I said young man 'cause your in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man there's a place you can go
I said young man when you're short on your dough
You can stay there and I'm sure you will find

Many ways to have a good time.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

They have everything for young men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

Young man, I was once in your shoes
I said, I was down and out with the blues
I felt no man cared if I were alive
I felt the whole world was so jive

That’s when someone came up to me
And said, young man, take a walk up the street
There’s a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way

Arya:  "Tom Boy" by Bettie Serveert

"From where I stand, I can see, they've got the upper hand on me.

Reminds me of this world at last, simply changes much too fast for me.

And when they call out, will I hear them?  And when they fall out, will I see them?

This yellow light, on the crowd, and colors way too loud to see,

Reveal their drive, we could change it, try to rearrange it.

They call me a tom boy, and I let them

Cause only a tom boy, could forget them, and simply change it

They call me a tom boy, and I love it

Cause only a tom boy, could stand above it, by simply changing"

One more left after this, that is, unless GRRM, you know … :D

Not spoilers.

Reek’s redemption—Le Freak by Chic.  Great doc about Studio 54 on Netflix right now.

 ADWD Reek III

"My name is Reek." He had to remember his name. "It rhymes with freak."

All that pressure got you down
Has your head been spinning all around?
Feel the rhythm, check the rhyme
Come on along and have a real good time

Like the days of Stomping at the Savoy
Now we "freak," oh, what a joy
Just come on down to the 54
Find your spot out on the floor

Ah, freak out!
Le freak, c'est chic
Freak out!
Ah, freak out!
Le freak, c'est chic
Freak out!

Arya in Braavos—Lose Yourself to Dance by Daft Punk. (That’s Nile Rodgers from Chic on guitar and check the call outs to the 70s and Soul Train in the official video)

I don’t think Arya’s in any danger of losing herself to the FM (red herring), but I think she’s in serious danger of losing herself like Stoneheart to (water) dance, an euphemism GRRM uses for war/conflict/revenge.

Jaime burning Cersei’s letter: I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor

AFFC Jaime VII

Jaime read it in the window seat, bathed in the light of that cold white morning. Qyburn's words were terse and to the point, Cersei's fevered and fervent. Come at once, she said. Help me. Save me. I need you now as I have never needed you before. I love you. I love you. I love you. Come at once.

Vyman was hovering by the door, waiting, and Jaime sensed that Peck was watching too. "Does my lord wish to answer?" the maester asked, after a long silence.

A snowflake landed on the letter. As it melted, the ink began to blur. Jaime rolled the parchment up again, as tight as one hand would allow, and handed it to Peck. "No," he said. "Put this in the fire."

At first, I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking, I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking, how you did me wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to get along

And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to bother me

And you see me, somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you
And so you felt like droppin' in and just expect me to be free
Well now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me

Go on now, go, walk out the door, just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore

Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got my life to live, and I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive, I will survive, Oh

Sam’s the man in black sleuthing in the Citadel risking his neck for his NW brother men (oh, and remember Fat Pink Mast)—Theme from Shaft (Mast!) by Isaac Hayes

This is what a Maester’s chain looks like in AGOT: The Disco Musical

Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
(Shaft) Ya damn right

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
(Shaft) Can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about? (Slayer!)
(Shaft) Right on

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother - (Shut your mouth)
But I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft - (Then we can dig it)

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
(John Shaft)
