Farewell to The Greatest

Story

A true legend. I expect this post will be moved to entertainment, but I don't think it should be. This was a man who through his skill and braggadocio made himself an icon and created the template for the modern sports star. His defiance in the face of social issues and the loss of what were his prime years because of this make him more than just a sports hero. Ali will be missed. The champ is gone, the champ is gone, the champ is gone…

Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?

No, I am not going ten thousand miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would put my prestige in jeopardy and could cause me to lose millions of dollars which should accrue to me as the champion.

But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is right here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality…

If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. But I either have to obey the laws of the land or the laws of Allah. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail. We’ve been in jail for four hundred years.”

TRUTH. Truly a man who was ahead of his time. And an amazing boxer. The greatest doesn't even cover it. RIP Bad man.

I was just thinking about him yesterday and wondering how he was doing.  Sad news, but I guess not unexpected.  RIP, Mr. Ali.  You were a titan.

He had such a quick mind - faster than his famous footwork even.  To see what happened as a result of the boxing that made him a household word was truly tragic.  And, yes, he was a **handsome** man - just like he said!

RIP

i was just thinking about this quote the other day.  summed the man up perfectly.

the bbc website lead with the headline 'boxing legend' dies.  i totally disagree, he was a great boxer, but a more formidable human being.

"YOU MY OPPOSER WHEN I WANT FREEDOM!"

"BUMAYE, BUMAYE, BUMAYE, BUMAYE!"

I refuse to think of him being gone. He lives forever in my mind, my memories of his spirit, a special, special American, a champion to humanity. We would need a book to even begin to express this transformative, titan of a icon. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM.

I met him once in Boston. He hit me with a straight jab and then gave me an autograph. ABC Wide World of Sports was a traditional growing up so he was on TV a lot. A true original and another reminder of how much the world has changed.
