A Timeline Project: Robert's Rebellion and beyond

I've looked at various different timelines for the series available and have not been satisfied with them. The problem is, of course, that there are very few concrete details about the passage of time. I have taken it upon myself to cross-reference between the books, the wiki, various discussions on the forum, and various analyzations of character birthdays. Travel time was one of the most difficult topics to analyze, but due to information it led most of my interpretations in Robert's Rebellion. Please give the dates a little leeway due to that fact. Please note: this timeline, especially beginning 283 AC, takes R+L=J as fact.

I've included most of my sources so as to allow for you to double-check my work. As a note, the Got book that I'm using is a soft-back book Mass Market 2011 edition, so if you have a different copy, the page numbers might be off. Any comments or concerns you have, please feel free to mention them below.

273 AC

279 AC

  • Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martel are betrothed "early in the year" - "Early in the year 279 AC, Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, was formally betrothed to Princess Elia Martell, the delicate young sister of Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. They were wed the following year," (The World of Ice and Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II.)

280 AC

  • January to March - Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell marry. - "Early in the year 279 AC, Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, was formally betrothed to Princess Elia Martell, the delicate young sister of Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. They were wed the following year," "Nor did the birth of King Aerys's first grandchild, a girl named Rhaenys, born on Dragonstone in 280 AC, do aught to reconcile father and son." (The World of Ice and Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II.) ; The year after they are betrothed but must be early in the year due to Rhaenys being born the same year; Early 280 (min: Jan to max: March)
  • October to December - Rhaenys Targaryen is born - "Nor did the birth of King Aerys's first grandchild, a girl named Rhaenys, born on Dragonstone in 280 AC, do aught to reconcile father and son." "After the birth of Princess Rhaenys, her mother had been bedridden for half a year"; Late in the year due to marriage early in the year; Elia was bedridden for 6 moons after; Late 280 (min: Oct to max: Dec) (The World of Ice and Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II.)
  • Late in the year, the Tourney at Harrenhal is announced - "The tourney was first announced by Walter Whent, Lord of Harrenhal, late in the year 280 AC, not long after a visit from his younger brother, Ser Oswell Whent, a knight of the Kingsguard." (The World of Ice and Fire )

281 AC

  • May to July - Tourney at Harrnehal - "Princess Elia was there, his wife, and yet my brother gave the crown to the Stark girl, and later stole her away from her betrothed." "After the birth of Princess Rhaenys, her mother had been bedridden for half a year" The fact that the tourney was announced in late 280 AC suggests that it took place at the first half of the year, but since Elia was present it couldn't have taken place before April. (min: April to max: June) When you add travel time between King's Landing and Harrenhal, that puts it even later.
  • October to December - Rhaenys Targaryen turns one
  • November - Aegon is born - According to the “The dragon has three heads” vision of Dany in THotU, Rhaegar was present for Aegon's birth. Aegon was born late in the year, only a few months before the Rebellion officially began; Elia nearly dies giving birth and the maester tells them she will no longer be able to have children.; Late 281. I've placed this in November because of information from the disappearance of Lyanna.
  • December 31 - Snow falls in King's Landing and ice forms on the Blackwater - "On the last day of the year [281 AC], snow began to fall upon King's Landing, and a crust of ice formed atop the Blackwater Rush." (The World of Ice and Fire - The Fall of the Dragons: The Year of the False Spring)

282 AC

  • January 14 - The Blackwater is frozen; King Aerys has wildfire burning in the Red Keep; Prince Rhaegar has disappeared (probably to meet Lyanna). - "The snowfall continued off and on for the best part of a fortnight, by which time the Blackwater was hard frozen, and icicles draped the roofs and gutters of every tower in the city. As cold winds hammered the city, King Aerys II turned to his pyromancers, charging them to drive the winter off with their magics. Huge green fires burned along the walls of the Red Keep for a moon's turn. Prince Rhaegar was not in the city to observe them, however. Nor could he be found in Dragonstone with Princess Elia and their young son, Aegon." (The World of Ice and Fire - The Fall of the Dragons: The Year of the False Spring)
  • January 15 - Rhaegar and Lyanna meet and disappear - "With the coming of the new year, the crown prince had taken to the road with half a dozen of his closest friends and confidants, on a journey that would ultimately lead him back to the Riverlands. Not ten leagues from Harrenhal, Rhaegar fell upon Lyanna Stark of Winterfell."; Early in the new year (on the road by the time the snow hits at the last day of the year); Early 282 (min: Jan 15 to max: Apr 1)
  • January 16 - Brandon discovers Lyanna missing and departs for King's Landing. - "He [Brandon] was on his way to Riverrun. . . when he heard about Lyanna, and went to King's Landing instead. It was a rash thing to do." Brandon and friends goes immediately to King’s Landing when he hears the news of Lyanna’s abduction. I think that Lyanna would have been traveling with Brandon to Riverrun in order to witness him marry Catelyn, or why would she have been in the Riverlands to start with? Therefore he would have discovered her missing fairly quickly.
  • February 1 - Brandon arrives in King's Landing.  At the gates to the Red Keep, Brandon, not knowing that Rhaegar was not present, shouted for Rhaegar to come out and die. This lead King Aerys II Targaryen to arrest Brandon and his companions on the charge of plotting the murder of the crown prince. - (Takes about 16 days for a small party on horses to get from Harrenhall part of River Road to King's Landing)
  • February 3 - Aerys' summons are delivered to the fathers of Brandon's companions. "Aerys accused them of treason and summoned their fathers to court to answer the charge, with the sons as hostages. When they came, he had them murdered without trial. Fathers and sons both." Approx 2 days for a raven to fly from King's Landing to the North.
  • March 12 - Rhaegar and Lyanna arrive at the Tower of Joy - (If headed directly from Harrenhal to Tower of Joy, would take about 57 days (if slowed by snow))
  • April 5 - Rickard Stark arrives in King's Landing - "Aerys accused them of treason and summoned their fathers to court to answer the charge, with the sons as hostages. When they came, he had them murdered without trial. Fathers and sons both." An unknown time passes until their fathers show up at court and Aerys murdered them. (Two months from Winterfell to King's Landing but possibly less if Rickard Stark was heading to Riverrun for the wedding) Approximately 1 month (if Rickard was headed to Riverrun) to 3 months (if he was in Winterfell and gathered with his lords first) after the letter. (March to May) For the sake of not give a range for every date, I'm going to say it was April that they arrived in King's Landing, since it's a mid-range.
  • April 8 - Aerys' summons for Ned and Robert's heads arrive at the Eyrie. - "The true start of Robert's Rebellion began with Lord Arryn's refusal and his courageous calling of his banners in the defense of justice." After death of Brandon and Rickard, Aerys calls for heads of Robert and Eddard. (approx 2 1/2 to 3 days for Raven to go from King's Landing to Eyrie) Jon Arryn rises up in rebellion.
  • April 10 - Marq Grafton called others in the Vale to help bar the rebels from the port of Gulltown.Probably quite soon after Jon Arryn called his banners.
  • April 11 - Ned and Robert leave to call their banners; Jon Arryn leaves Eyrie to bring bannermen to retake Gulltown.
  • May 1 - Jon Arryn and Robert heads to Gulltown with rebel bannermen and Taking of Gulltown takes place. Robert departs (taking a boat from Gulltown) soon after to call his banners.-  Small(ish) party traveling at average speeds would make it to Gulltown in about 20 days.
  • May 11 - Ned, rather than going with Robert and Jon, makes his way back north by crossing the Mountains of the Moon to the Fingers, and finds a fisherman to carry him across the Bite to the Sisters. - A slow pace (through the mountains) to Coldwater from Eyrie is about 1 month.
  • May 15 - Robert arrives at Storm's End to call banners -  2 week journey on ship between Gulltown and Storm's End
  • May 18 - There is a storm; Ned is washed up on the Sisters. He's taking a fishing boat, so it might take about 5-7 days from Coldwater to Sisters (possibly more/less due to storm).
  • June 5 - Ned travels from the Sisters to Winterfell to raise the North’s banners. - Actual boat from Sisterton to White Harbor (about 3 days) then from White Harbor to Winterfell (about 2 weeks at fast pace).
  • June 7 - Battles of Summerhall -  "When Robert went to raise his banners he heard of the meeting at Summerhall and rode out to defeat the three lords before they could unite." "At Summerhall Robert won three battles in one day and brought prisoners back to SE. Robert converts Lords Cafferen and Grandison from supporters of Targaryen to rebels."; Shortly after raising his banners, Robert wins three battles in one day and brings prisoners back to SE. Robert converts Lords Cafferen and Grandison by befriending them. Takes about 23 days to get from Storm's End to Summerhall with an army.
  • July 1 - Robert heads back to Storm's End with prisoners of war; After the Battles of Summerhall, Robert returned to Storm's End for unknown reasons. There, Robert turned his enemies into friends, as he managed to get Lords Grandison and Cafferen, both loyalist commanders, over to the rebel side, as well as Silveraxe Fell. - "At Summerhall Robert won three battles in one day and brought prisoners back to SE.
  • July 5 - Northmen gather at Winterfell at Ned's command - Takes about a month for bannermen to gather their men and head to Winterfell; (Then 3 months to get host to Stoney Sept; probably met battles along the way)
  • July 6 - King Aerys, due to the events in the stormlands, came to believe that his Hand of the King,Owen Merryweather, was ineffectual. The king was even considering that Merryweather might have been so ineffectual as to possibly aiding the rebellion. In result, Owen was stripped of his lands and titles, and exiled. Lord Jon Connington, a friend of Rhaegar's with a reputation of a warrior, was named as Hand in Owen's stead. -  Jon Connington probably gathered forces almost immediately and led them into the field. Met by Tully and Arryn?
  • August 5 - Hoster Tully, the lord of Riverrun, joined the rebellion on the side of the rebels, an allegiance secured by the betrothal between Eddard and Catelyn Tully, to replace the match between Brandon Stark and Catelyn, which fell through when Brandon had been killed a few short days before he was to wed Catelyn. - Jon Arryn handles rebels in Gulltown while Ned and Robert head to gather their banners. Afterward, Jon heads to Riverrun (2 months from Gulltown) to strike an alliance with Hoster Tully and ask for assistance of Riverlands. Betrothal is struck between Ned and Catelyn.
  • October 8 - Battle of Ashford - "Lord Cafferen was later killed at Ashford Castle by Randyll Tarly"; Takes place after Battles of Summerhall; Takes approx 2 months to get from Storm's End to Ashford (plus the time Robert spent wooing/converting the Lords (here estimated as about 1 month))
  • October 23 - Robert is wounded on his way to link up with his allies - Had to run and hide in Stoney Sept so army led by Jon Connington would not kill him
  • October 25 - Battle of the Bells - "Seventeen years had come and gone since the Battle of the Bells, yet the sound of bells ringing still tied a knot in his guts." This quote comes approx in the early months of 300 AC. This means that the Battle took place either in early months of 283 or in the late months of 282. Since Ned and Catelyn were not married until after this and Robb was born in 283 and then Jon was born in 283 as well, it must have been late 282)
  • It was after the Battle of the Bells that King Aerys realized that Robert was not some outlaw lord, but rather the greatest threat to his dynasty since Daemon Blackfyre. Jon Connington was exiled for his failure and stripped of lands and titles. To replace Connington, Lord Qarlton Chelsted was named Hand. Aerys ordered his pyromancers to place caches of wildfire throughout King’s Landing, even within the Red Keep itself.
  • November 20 - Hoster Tully saw both his daughters wed during a double ceremony. - "She and her sister had been married on the same day, and left in their father's care when their new husbands had ridden off to rejoin Robert's rebellion." "his gallant cousin had died in the Battle of the Bells. He needed a young wife if House Arryn was to continue . . . a young wife known to be fertile." "one day fifteen years ago, this second father had become a brother as well"; Wedding took place after the Battle of the Bells; arranged quickly so probably only a few days to a week after Battle; and takes 25-30 days from Stoney Sept to Riverrun
  • November 20 - Robb is conceived  - "Ned had lingered scarcely a fortnight with his new bride before he too had ridden off to war with promises on his lips. At least he had left her with more than words; he had given her a son. Nine moons had waxed and waned, and Robb had been born in Riverrun while his father still warred in the south."; Robb was conceived on their wedding night or within the next two weeks; Robb was born in 283 (9 months after the wedding)
  • November 30 - After the Battle of the Bells had been fought, Barristan Selmy and Jon Darry of the Kingsguard were sent into the riverlands to retrieve the remnants of Connington's army, while the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Gerold Hightower, was sent by King Aerys to find Rhaegar. - Happens after Battle of the Bells (October 25); takes about 30 days to go from King's Landing to Stoney Sept; takes about 30 days to go directly from King's Landing to Tower of Joy if Hightower knew where Rhaegar was.
  • Rhaenys turns 2
  • Nov - Aegon turns 1
  • Dec 8 - Siege of Storm's End begins - Siege began after Ashford, due to Mace Tyrell fighting in Battle of Ashford. Could be approx time of Battle of Bells, or just before but takes approx 2 months for army with supply train to go from Ashford to Storm's End "Tyrell and Redwine besieged Stannis at SE for close to a year when Davos brought his onions."
  • December 17 - Jon is conceived - Between 2 weeks and 3 months after Ned rode off to war after his wedding

283 AC

  • March 2 - Rhaegar arrives in KL. While Rhaegar returned to King's Landing, Gerold Hightower did not. He was next seen at the Tower of Joy in the Red Mountains of Dorne, with two of his sworn brothers, Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Oswell Whent, who had been with Rhaegar when he abducted Lyanna. Rhaegar convinces his father to ask Lord Tywin Lannister for help. From Casterly Rock the only reply was silence. - Rhaegar would have waited until he was sure Lyanna was pregnant before leaving Tower of Joy (approx 1 1/2 months (Lyanna would therefore have missed 2 of her moonsbloods)); then would travel back (takes about 30 days to go directly from Tower of Joy to King's Landing)
  • August 6 - Aerys's most recent Hand, Qarlton Chelsted, becomes suspicious of the pyromancers who visit the king day and night. When he uncovers Aerys's wildfire plot, he tries to bring the king to other thoughts, but nothing he tried would work. In the end, he chose to resign as Hand, which caused Aerys to burn him alive. Aerys's favorite pyromancer, Rossart, was named Hand of the King in Chelsted's stead. Aerys violently rapes Rhaella that night, having become aroused by burning people. (Dany is conceived) - "The day he burned his mace-and-dagger Hand, Jaime and Jon Darry had stood at guard outside her bedchamber whilst the king took his pleasure. "You're hurting me," they had heard Rhaella cry through the oaken door. "You're hurting me." In some queer way, that had been worse than Lord Chelsted's screaming. "We are sworn to protect her as well," Jaime had finally been driven to say. "We are," Darry allowed, "but not from him." Jaime had only seen Rhaella once after that, the morning of the day she left for Dragonstone."; 2 weeks before Sack; before Rhaegar leaves for Trident because Jon Darry killed with Rhaegar's forces at the Trident; not too long before battle, though, because Rhaella still has wounds when she heads for Dragonstone
  • August 13 - Battle of the Trident; Robert is wounded and commands Eddard Stark to take the men to King's Landing while Robert travels at a slower pace - About a week after Rossart named Hand. The Battle of the Trident happened approximately a week after Daenerys’ conception, and a week later took place the Sack.of KL.;
  • August 15 - After the royalist defeat at the Trident, Queen Rhaella Targaryen and her son, Prince Viserys Targaryen, are sent to the island of Dragonstone with the Red Keep's master-at-arms, Ser Willem Darry. - "Rhaegar met Robert on the Trident, and you know what happened there. When the word reached court, Aerys packed the queen off to Dragonstone with Prince Viserys. Princess Elia would have gone as well, but he forbade it."; Directly after Trident news reaches King's Landing (Raven takes about 2 days from Trident to King's Landing)
  • August 20 - Robb Stark is born - 9 months after conception
  • August 20 - Sack of King's Landing; Death of Aerys, Elia, Rhaenys and Aegon. - "Queer that they never ask who killed Rossart . . . but of course, he was no one, lowborn, Hand for a fortnight, just another mad fancy of the Mad King."; 2 weeks after Rossart is named Hand, the Sack of King's Landing occurs.
  • August 22 - After Aerys is killed, Viserys is crowned by his mother on Dragonstone. (Raven takes about 2 days)
  • August 26 - When Robert Baratheon finally arrived in the city, Tywin Lannister presented the bodies of Elia, Aegon and Rhaenys as tokens of his fealty. Robert was pleased with the deaths of Rhaegar's family, but Eddard thought it a brutal act, and called it murder of children. This resulted in an argument between Eddard and Robert, which led to the former riding out alone that very night to finish the war in the south. - "He remembered the angry words they had exchanged when Tywin Lannister had presented Robert with the corpses of Rhaegar's wife and children as a token of fealty. Ned had named that murder; Robert called it war. [...]. Not even Jon Arryn had been able to calm that storm. Eddard Stark had ridden out that very day in a cold rage, to fight the last battles of the war alone in the south."; Robert wounded so his party moved slower than Ned's did to reach King's Landing; Ned reached KL hours after the Siege (only took him a week to get there). Robert arrives after (a few days?) and Ned argues with him about Targaryen children.
  • September 9 - Eddard Stark arrives at Storm's End to relieve the siege - "Maester Cressen remembered the day Davos had been knighted, after the siege of Storm's End. Lord Stannis and a small garrison had held the castle for close to a year."; Close to a year of siege (9 months to 1 year); Siege ended after Eddard marched South after the Sack of King's Landing (reaches Storm's End approx 11 days after leaving King's Landing plus any time he spent in King's Landing before that)
  • September 17 - Jon is born - "All of which is a long winded way of saying, no, Jon was not born "more than 1 year" before Dany... probably closer to eight or nine months or thereabouts."; Jon was born about 8 or 9 months before Dany; so about 1 month after she was conceived, so about 2 weeks after Sack of King's Landing
  • September 20 - Stannis was ordered by the new king, Robert I Baratheon, to build a fleet and assault Dragonstone. - Time from Storm's End to King's Landing (11 days).
  • September 22 - Battle of the Tower of Joy. Lyanna Stark (16) dies (from puerpal fever?). Eddard then tears down the tower to make cairns for the dead. - "Lyanna had only been 16" "The slim, sad girl who wore a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown spattered with gore could only be Lyanna." "Promise me, she had cried, in a room that smelled of blood and roses." "The fever had taken her strength and her voice had been faint as a whisper, but when he gave her his word, the fear had gone out of his sister's eyes."; Takes place around a fortnight to 1 month and 1/2 after the Sack (0 to 1 month after Jon's birth) (approx 13 days riding from Storm's End) (approx 26 days after Sack)
  • October 22 - Eddard rides to Starfall to deliver Arthur's sword, Dawn, to his sister, Ashara Dayne, who leaps into the Summer Sea shortly afterwards. - About 1 month for three horses at a slow pace to go from Tower of Joy to Starfall.
  • November 22 - Daynes give Ned wagon to bring Lyanna home; Daynes collect Arthur's body? - Would not make sense for Ned to bring heavy wagon to Dorne (didn't know would need to bring Lyanna's body home), especially with only 7 men. But would need wagon to bring Lyanna's body home. Daynes give him one for bringing sword home? Because Ashara loved Stark? Take about a month to get back to Tower of Joy to collect her body. Would he leave baby and wetnurse with Lyanna so that no one knows or do the Dayne's know about Jon?

284 AC

  • January 12 - Ned reconciles with Robert through their mutual mourning of Lyanna’s death - Take about 50 days to get from Tower of Joy to King's Landing with wagon carrying Lyanna's body.
  • April 22 - Ned returns to Winterfell - Take Ned and few remaining Northmen about 100 days to get from King's Landing to Winterfell with Lyanna's body
  • May 6 - Dany is born; Rhaella dies - "All of which is a long winded way of saying, no, Jon was not born "more than 1 year" before Dany... probably closer to eight or nine months or thereabouts."; 8.5 months after Sack (8 months after Jon is born) (7.5 months after Tower of Joy)
  • May 28 - Catelyn arrives at Winterfell with Robb to find Jon Snow already installed - Ned probably sent a Raven from Winterfell; If he had sent the raven from King's Landing, he would have either met Catelyn on the road or Catelyn would have gotten to Winterfell first. From Riverrun to Winterfell is about 36 days.

286 AC

  • Joffrey "Baratheon" is born
  • Tyrion (13) and his brother Jaime rescue a common girl,Tysha, from some bandits. Tyrion became so enamoured by her that he bribed asepton and married her in secret. Their happiness lasted only two weeks, however, before Tyrion’s father got news of the wedding. Lord Tywin commanded Jaime to say that Tysha was a prostitute whom Jaime had hired for Tyrion’s benefit. Because the “whore” had presumed to marry a Lannister, Tywin had his entire guard rape Tysha for a silver each and then made Tyrion go last for a gold coin, because a Lannister is worth more. - AGOT (Tyrion 6) (See 273 AC for Tyrion's birth)

287 AC

  • Sansa Stark is born

289 AC

  • Greyjoy Rebellion
  • Arya Stark is born

290 AC

  • Myrcella "Baratheon" is born - In 298 AC, during the welcoming feast in Winterfell, Myrcella was 7 "not quite 8" years old. Myrcella was 9 years old when she was betrothed to Trystane Martell in 299 AC. Being 7 in 298 AC and 9 in 299 AC gives only one option. Myrcella was thus born in 290 AC.

291 AC

  • Bran Stark is born
  • Tommen "Baratheon" is born - Tommen is younger than his sister by one year. Tommen is mentioned to have been 7 years old during 298 AC. In 299 AC, at Joffrey’s nameday tourney, Tommen is mentioned to have been 8 years old. In 299 AC, after the Battle of the Blackwater, Tommen is described to be 8 years old by his uncle Tyrion. In 300 AC, after Joffrey’s wedding, Tommen is described to be 8 years old again, this time by his supposed uncle (actual father) Jaime. Since Tommen is 8 years old in both 299 AC and 300 AC, he was 7 turning 8 in 299 AC, and 8 turning 9 in 300 AC. This means that Tommen was born in 291 AC.

292 AC

  • Robert "Robin" Arryn is born

295 AC

  • Rickon Stark is born

296 AC

  • May 6 - Dany turns 12 - See May 6, 284

  • Aug 31 - Approx. Tyrion and Jon arrive at Castle Black
  • Sept 03 - Jon hears that Benjen is to ride out to search for Ser Raymar Royce. Jon pleads to go with him but Benjen refuses him. - Three days after Jon arrives at Castle Black
  • Sept 04 - Benjen departs Castle Black (Rangers planned to look for Waymar Royce (who travelled 8-9 days) and Benjen promised jon to be back by his nameday (13 days is pushing it as it is))
  • Sep 17 - Jon turns 15 - See Sep 17, 283
  • Oct 1 - A raven arrives from Winterfell alerting Jon that Bran is awake and will live but is crippled; Jon breaks Grenn's wrist; Donal Noye scolds Jon about acting better than the other recruits; Jon receives letter about Bran; Jon offers to help train the other new recruits at Castle Black  - 2 weeks after Jon's nameday

300 AC

  • Jan 01 - Wedding between Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell; Joffrey is poisoned and dies; Sansa flees King's Landing with the help of Dontos; Tyrion is arrested - “There’s wine here. You don’t expect me to face my sister sober, surely? It’s a new century, my lady. The three hundredth year since Aegon’s Conquest.” (ASOS page 660)

Ok I have a few issues. Number one you can drape a body over a horse. Two I don't think he'd leave the kid with the Dates unless Holland stayed too. Many issues with your timeline you did make me realize something though, a key part. Someone could have seen the baby paraphernalia that would tell. So Ashara then fakes her death after the supposed still born, and said it was a girl to throw things off. Also it could have been Dark star as a child visiting his Dayne relly's. He saw something, told, they lied covered it up but Doesn't knows there is truth to it. Anyway just babbling!
