rayarts
So, in the preview we see a white raven flying towards Winterfell. White ravens are the ravens used by citadels, which are bigger and stronger and thus carry the most important news. So who do you think sent a message and what does it say? It could be Sam from Oldtown. It could be from KL (they have one, there was a shot of one in some episode before) and... who else? What does it say? TexasDirewolf
Hard to believe there isn't more discussion about this given how much we like to over-analyze here. We have to assume it's Sam right? I can't imagine anyone in the Capital could be bothered with what's going on in Winterfell right now. Maybe Sam hopes to rejoin Jon in Winterfell? Or at least seek refuge for Gilly and Little Sam in Winterfell.

dbunting
I was wondering the same thing, had to rewatch the preview to make sure that it was flying toward Winterfell. According to the show Wiki, it is dispatched from the Citidel only when they agree the season has changed. Who knows if that is what this is about though. It better not be a message from Sam for Jon, Sam has no way to know Jon is there.
Xarkar
Well the episode is titled the Winds of Winter, so it could simply be a Raven sent to WF (and all other castles) saying that Winter has arrived.

This is most likely. Solid point by another poster that Samwell wouldn't know about Jon and Winterfell yet.
the tower of albion
I bet that scene is from near the end of the episode and in inter cut with various assassinations at Kings landing, like Michael Corleone attending a babies baptism whilst his enemies were eliminated. (if memory serves) Or GRRM sending fourth white ravens to the writers. I'm coming for you Mo.Fo's

That isnt necessarily true. We dont know how much time has passed before the next episode. Its possible the news spread that the Starks once again held WF with Jon and Co. Remember time passes at odd intervals so E10 WF scenes could happen the same day, or a month later.
Minuteman
I think the only thing that white ravens are used for is to announce the beginning of winter. Only the Citadel has them but I don't think they are used for messaging. The arrival of the white raven means winter has come.
Aedam Targaryen
As far as I remember from the books, the only message the whites birds are used for are to signal the change of season. While that isn't a guarantee to be the same on the show as in the books, it seems pretty likely the message is "it's winter."

Hos the Hostage
White raven means only one thing - the changing of seasons. In this case, Winter (going by the title of the episode). (Although Sam said to Gilly that 'now that summer is ending, we'll see autumn colors). White ravens do no carry any messages like normal ravens. John Suburbs
Also from the book: white ravens and black ravens fight each other whenever they are together, which is passing odd.
