Bond 25: No Time To Die

Public exposure to his new romance with Taylor Swift has reportedly torpedoed Tom Hiddleston's turn as Commander Bond.

Quote

A source told The Sun: “Tom’s cool performance in The Night Manager saw him as a late contender for 007, but initial talks have come to an end.

“Bond needs an air of mystery – his public romance with Taylor has made him totally uncastable.”

Seems an odd reason to cut off the talks, but fair enough...

Edit: (8/26/2019)  Hiddleswift Down topic title is no more... Official title is up.  :(

Noooo!! Curse that foul witch!

Meanwhile, I guess that leaves some Hardy hope alive.

Did you see the flip through click bait list of actors at the bottom of the article?  Hardy was mentioned there.  Along with Elba and a couple others.  I think you can safely eliminate anyone approaching forty from the role though.

That's an extremely stupid reason in my book. Are these varlets not familiar with the capabilities of a Master Thespian?

That seems... really dumb. Hiddleston wasn't my first choice, but he'd have been fine; and there's no way his performance would've been impacted by this.

Its not like all the previous Bond actors had their personal lives shrouded in complete mystery. Roger Moore was even involved with what was close to an actual scandal, or at least a whole bunch of lawsuits.

Still, it does reopen the door to Elba (although if The Dark Tower turns into a franchise, he may not have time to be Bond).

I drank a Coke this weekend with Taylor Swift lyrics on the label, so clearly I'm far from an unbiased observer... but I say LONG LIVE HIDDLESWIFT!

Back on the Bond question though, I do wonder what direction they will take the franchise now.  They rebooted it... made him old and beaten down two movies later... then practically rebooted it again.  Give me a good story with internal consistency and I'm fine.  Without a full reboot, I'm not sure how you deal with the love interest from the end of SPECTRE though.  Go the Tracy Draco route with her?

I also am of the opinion that they have nailed the hiring with every actor in the franchise; the only problem has been hanging onto actors too long previously.  I figure they'll do well with whoever they hire here.

He would make a good Bond's villain.

I want a woman to become the new Bond. Jamie Bond!!

Listen, if we're talking master thespians and the possibilities of minorities playing Bond, then I want to go with Bond... Lamont Bond.

The world will never recoup the 'why I broke up with 007' album that almost was.

How epic would it be to have Taylor sing the opening song in a movie starring Hiddleston that deals with Bond moving on from his love interest at the end of SPECTRE though?!!?

It really would be but is Taylor Swift Bond theme material?

Daniel Craig reported offered 150 million (I don't know how to do the pounds symbol on my US centric keyboard) to come back for two more films.  :stunned:

Quote

“The studio is desperate to secure the actor’s services while they phase in a younger long-term successor,” a source told the publication.

“Everyone knows how much executives adore him, and the idea of losing him at such a crucial time in the franchise isn’t an option as far as all the studio honchos are concerned.”

The source finished: “Daniel’s the key for a seamless, safe transition as far as Sony and Bond bosses are concerned, and they’re prepared to pay a king’s ransom to make it happen.”

I'm not sure I understand that snippet.  There's never been a "transition" where Bond is concerned.  The next movie opens on some dramatic action sequence and there's a new face there.

I love Craig as Bond and wouldn't mind seeing him do more, but while he was young when he started he's starting to show his age a bit now.  Also, they kind of painted themselves into a corner with the character at the end of SPECTRE if Craig is to continue.  Short of pulling a "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" on the poor girl's wedding day; there's no good way out here that I can see.

Daniel Craig was 38 when Casino Royale came out. Is that really considered young? For anybody in movies?

Hmmm...  Thought he was younger than that.  Definitely puts him in the Roger Moore "man-boobs dressed as a circus clown" status of James Bonds.

Was the title to this thread always Hiddleswift Down or did you change that today? Either way, bravo

It was the original title.  :D

I read today that they've offered Craig $150 million for two more movies... I would have no problem with that except that he's pretty much burned that bridge, credibility-wise.... IMO-- you can't make fun of a role that made you famous, and then come back just for the money... it's just... icky.
