Bond 25: No Time To Die

Why not bring back Martin Campbell? He's made arguably the two best Bond films ever?

I'd like to see something a bit more upbeat and lighthearted the next go-around. The last ones have been solid, but so damn somber. Not as quite as free and loose as the Man From UNCLE reboot, but closer to that than a Jason Bourne potboiler. Wright would probably steer it that direction.

Booooooooo! What makes the Craig Bond films so great is that they are realistic. I actually believe he's a spy and he behaves like, unlike many past Bonds.

Have to agree.

Quantum of Solace and Spectre were both fairly disappointing films, but Skyfall and particularly Casino Royale were excellent. For the record, I may have eased up over time but I think Spectre is at least acceptable rainy Sunday afternoon fare. The problem wasn't Bond either, so I'm more than fine with Craig taking the helm once again.

As for him making fun of the role, my understanding was that he loved playing Bond but, being in his late 40s, didn't really enjoy the intense physical training required. Personally, I don't see a need for any more shirtless Bond scenes anyway.

I can't defend Spectre, but Quantum is better than people give it credit for. I think people judge it unfairly by comparing it to the amazing quality of Casino Royale, and speaking of which, try watching QoS directly after watching CR. It makes it a lot better.

I definitely agree.  Quantum is a really good movie.

I barely remember QoS which is never a good sign. At least Spectre had the lovey Lea Seydoux...

Speaking of Martin Campbell I’d definitely be down for that, although I don’t know how much he works these days. He’s no spring chicken, and after Green Lantern his phone probably isn’t ringing much.

QoS is probably my favorite of the new ones.  There is some beautiful direction in that one that, for me, surpasses the others on rewatch.

I concur.. QoS is under appreciated

Yeah, QoS has aged well I feel. It felt a bit slight compared to what people were expecting at the time, but with the benefit of hindsight and the films after it, slight has become lean. It's much better than Spectre but tbh I prefer it to Skyfall in a lot of ways too. Skyfall was too indebted to The Dark Knight in ways that made it not always make sense.

My problem with Skyfall was that they took the premise of a rebooted Bond... and made him old in the space of one film.  Ruined all the in between.

Edit:  I also thought that Vesper made a much better Tracy Draco type than the Bond Gal from SPECTRE that I don't even remember her name off the top of my head.  Her inevitable death will not weigh heavily on me.

My biggest beef with Skyfall is that they made it clear that James Bond is one person. I think it would have been so awesome if at the end of Craig's last film, he gets shot dead, the first time we ever seen Bond die. Then end the movie with M talking to an unseen person, ending with him saying, "Are you ready to serve your country, Mr. Bond?" Then pan out and show that he's talking to Idris Elba, with the idea being that James Bond, 007 is an alias, not a singular man, thus making it more easy for him to sneak around and then you can look back and justify why there are several different actors playing Bond.

I’ve heard that idea proposed.  Eh.  Feels unwieldy and overly complicated.

I love this response - he is the most unbelievable spy ever. Spies do not go around telling people they are spies. Nor do they call themselves secret agents because there's no such thing as 'agents' in the UK. I mean, I love a good Bond film as much as the next person but let's not kid ourselves it's a realistic representation.

Good news about Fukunaga as far as I am concerned. I am here for the freshness.

Hell of a lot more realistic than invisible cars, ski slope machine gun fights, or silent villains that throw hats that can decapitate you.

Realistic is a relative term IMO when it comes to Bond films.

My favorite example of this is in Diamonds are Forever when Connery slips his ID on the body of the SPECTRE baddie he has just killed and the lady with him pulls the wallet and says “You just killed James Bond!!!” And Connery says “Is that who that was?  Well... just goes to show no ones invincible.”

Yeah, that’s what I was getting at. The Craig Bond films have been more realistic, relatively speaking, than their predecessors. The gadgets haven’t been cartoonish, and Craig actually looks the part. I always laugh when I see Connery chop some guy and it knocks them out.

I think the Dalton bond has the same “realism” factor as Craig, even more so.
