Bond 25: No Time To Die

I can't even begin to tell what the plot is, but it looks like a lot of fun set pieces. On the other hand, the Spectre trailer also looked good; its pretty easy to make a good trailer out of a high-budget movie.

But on the third hand, I have a lot of confidence in Cary Fukunaga as a director and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a writer (assuming she made substantial contributions) and Daniel Craig will always rise to the occasion when he's given good material. So there is reason for hope.

It’s a problem they have created for themselves since Casino Royale

The best Bond film in 50 years doesn't strike me as if it could really introduce a problem for the franchise. That said, I haven't been a particular fan of the other Craig Bond films, but it's not so much Craig that is the issue, nor Bond per se. I think it's just that a franchise of some 25 films is going to get stale no matter what you do.

There's nothing we have not seen before (I mean, even the "James Bond retires and someone else is 007" is the explanation for what happens following the original Casino Royale...) and it's why something like the Bourne franchise was so invigorating (for a time) because it pulled the "spy" genre out of a formulation from the Cold War which still marks the current Bond franchise. And also why I thought The Man From U.N.C.L.E was fun because it was a deliberately retro thing putting the genre back into its originating context.

The trailer looks fun enough, though, and it seems clearly aimed at sparking nostalgia with the gatling gun-armed DB5. And Fukunaga is an excellent director, and Phoebe Waller-Bridges an excellent writer. But I'm not sure either can really get around the fact that Bond should probably be put out to pasture (but won't be, because franchises are everything to Hollywood these days).

My first thought as well, but that said, I’ll obviously go see it. I think I own all but three of the films.

Say it with me now, “Black Bond.” Idris Elba should be the next Bond, but Skyfall had to go and ruin the idea that the name James Bond is just an alias attached to 007. Honestly all the films make a lot more sense if you’d allow this to happen.

I'm not really interested in 'James Bond but he's black!' or 'James Bond but she's a woman!' film, it's pretty unimaginative storytelling trying to pass as being edgy or creative.

Idris Elba in particular would have been good though. He's only a couple of years younger than Craig though, you'd think for a new Bond they'd want a younger actor.

Just watched the trailer. And indeed, it had the now obligatory young, sassy female upstaging and probably being set up to replace the longstanding, veteran hero.

Did they learn nothing from the Star Wars fiasco?

Think I’ll give this one a skip - but then, Bond has been way too flawed and emotionally vulnerable since Craig took over anyway. Time for him to die indeed.

Yes how dare this manly man show emotional vulnerability like an actual person. Disgusting!

will be watching this although the trailer didnt wow me. Lashana Lynch starring and Phoebe Waller Bridge writing is a huge draw for me though

This new film features a black, female 007 who gets prominent focus in the trailer. Close enough.

I fear Idris Elba's chance has passed for the reasons stated (age), but yes, he would have made a dashing 007. Chiwetel Ejiofor would do a fine job as well, and he's a few years younger (though older than Craig was when he took the role).

Hm.  While I generally enjoyed the first 3 Craig films, never got around to seeing Spectre due to lukewarm reviews and actually pretty poor word of mouth from friends/family.  Based on that trailer, seems like I'll miss some context if I don't see Spectre?  Granted, I'm not too concerned about figuring out the plot of a Bond film.

I get not liking the concept of changing a character just for the sake of changing them, it doesn't bother me but I know a lot of people dislike it. However, that's not the crux of what I'm pushing. Bond films have one fatal flaw at this point and it's that Bond can't die. A lot of the suspense is gone at this point. That works when the films are silly, but not as much with this new, more serious version of Bond. Imagine how great it would be if an actor, say Tom Hardy, is cast to play the new Bond and then they just kill him off at the end of the first act Deep Blue Sea style.

To address the age issue you both brought up, while I'd never advocate for someone to see Hobbs & Shaw, Elba actually was moving really well in his stunt scenes. I think he could pull off three movies over the course of six or so years, not that it's ever going to happen at this point.

I don't agree that Bond is a franchise beyond saving, but if someone does I don't think just casting Bond as a black guy is gonna be enough to deal with the issues it has.

Thing is, Casino Royale really did shape up and divest itself of a lot of the sexist, in particular, baggage, but the following films just went and brought it all back in again.

See above, it's more about adding a new facet: Bond can die.

I think in hindsight it's regrettable, both for Craig and Brosnan, that their first entries were so much stronger. Both Goldeneye and CR are not just great Bond movies, they're legit all-time great films. The disparity in quality is a bit problematic.

Interesting choice. I'm still surprised she's such a mainstream success. It's pretty weird stuff - honestly really up my alley. Then again, Adele is not my kind of music whatsoever and I was fine with that Skyfall track - I bet Eilish's theme isn't good to me, though I just played most of her album again the other day.

I could see it working. The memorable Bond themes stick out in some way and her music definitely does that. It also has a beat/cadence/vibe that could complement the theme visuals really well.

Agreed... Chiwetel Ejiofor is about as good as it gets... he kills in everything he's in.

regardless, I'll go see this in the theater, because its the best way to watch an action flick like this, and my theater has great popcorn... but I'm expecting more style over substance, and to come away disappointed, as I have the last few movies.

I've really enjoyed the last two theme tunes, even when I expected to hate them. I can listen to that Sam Smith song without watching the movie which is always a good sign.

The last serious mis step for me was Casino Royale's Chris Cornells track, which just didn't seem to fit at all. I also kinda hated the overall opening credit scene for that movie too, which is odd considering how much better the rest of the film is.

No idea who that is...

I’ve heard her name mentioned a lot, but never checked her out. I decided to after hearing the news.

How is she a thing? I’m open minded about music and always try to give artists a few chances. I listened to three songs and she is absolutely terrible. It’s like a mediocre talent had sex with pop music, acid and heroin and produced a baby. That’s Billie Eilish.
